The actual tunings are half a step down from what they show on screen. When it says "Open D" at 0:52 it's actually open C# (C#-G#-C#-F-G#-C#) and "Open G" at 9:03 really means open F# (C#-F#-C#-F#-A#-C#). And yes, I know the F in open C# is technically an E#, please don't send Adam Neely or Threatening Music Notation after me. So great to see this video back up!
What an iconic episode. It changed my life 10 years ago and made me fall in love with playing hill country blues. I had always loved listening to it since the first time I heard Chulahoma, but goddamn it's so cathartic to play. Open tune to G and crank up the reverb.
Crazy brother. This video changed my life as well. Made me pick up slide and really nail down my finger picking. Here we are a decade later and it's just part of my playing
YESSS. My favorite interview. The way Dan makes fun of the show name and Sweeny's insecurity with the slide... It makes me laugh every time. Good stuff guys. Love Black Keys as well.
@@scottnito2640 I like the way Brent plays. The hybrid picking goes hard. I really dig his psychedelic hillbilly surf rock stuff he does in his other projects.
Loved this episode of GUITAR MOVES! Your awesome Matt, love that Dans pop called you out on this episode. Your so kewl & always great guitar moves from you Matt. Pace sempre, L
Wow I'm pretty sure I've watched Guitar moves since it started and just watched him play in Chavez, very cool a much more confident player on stage than on this show.

Before I tried a slide I thought of like having two or three ‘polished slide thimbles’ on two or three of your fingers, then I started playing slide with a normal slide n realised that’d be almost impossible to play with three single finger slides…… maybe if they wer incredibly polished grooves in em in which the string could sit…… I dunno… just another idiot idea of mine, like fitting ebows across the bridge n then just play slide over the ever ebowing string maybe with a bit of good whammy bar action too?? I mean, who’s doin that
I watched a Fat Possum doc about all these guys from the Delta who have wildly different styles and takes on playing Delta blues, most of them unknown or barely known (R. L. Burnside being the exception, Junior Kimbrough too since you're watching this). One man had lost fingers and was partially paralyzed from-nobody should have to go through those things. What he lost in dexterity and digits, he more than compensated for with creativity. He used butterknives and other assorted cutlery. He used whatever there was. He made his guitar sound unlike anything I've ever heard. He wasn't the only guy who was totally outside of the box, but if "Necessity is the mother of invention" was an old blues guitarist, it'd be him. I can't believe I don't remember his name. You'd dig it for sure. It should be easy to find on RUclips if you look through the videos from Fat Possum. Whoa... sorry for the rant! 💜
Man, this video takes me back. Can't believe it's been over 10 years. I appreciate you posting it, dude.
10 YEARS!?
i remember when i first started a band i watched this video, and were still playing
Get Dan back for another round!

Bro was just figuring this out
So this an old video?
Nah F is on the money bro, only half a step between B and C and E and F. Open C# rules man, have fun with that shit!

please make a video on them man! really missed your videos
@@spongedanny1534 Very kind of you. I'm on a longer hiatus for now. But i'd love to see that happen sometime.
LOVE Dan & Black Keys GEEKED OUT ON EVERY PART of this interview. I have 99% of albums. So talented ❤ Love you Sweeny
One of my favourite videos ever - thank you for uploading again!
cool dudes! fun to spend some time with you!!
The first six minutes of this sounds like what my old lady is currently enduring every night. She’s a saint. 😂
Thanks man for reposting this is one of the videos that got me in to open tuning
Sweeney got absolutely smoked in this video lol
Michael_talks_a_lot_of_shit
Both.
Now he knows how all those poor joints feel. 😢
Has he played for
Every time I watch him play, it looks like it’s his first time ever handling a guitar.
I miss this series man it was so good
Dan is such an inspiration ❤️
Man I don’t know if y’all are still makin new ones but a Brent Hinds episode would really tickle my pickle
Bill is way better and doesn’t act like a faded tool 😂

Dan’s patience with this guy is commendable.
great episode, thanks for posting👍
Sitting with Dan, playing guitar, learning some moves and having a chat is my dream.
This Episode was the 1st one I watched and it was and it still my favorite Episode🙂
Sweeney, consider yourself officially SMOKED. 😎
Old RUclips is returning. The world is healing.
Seeing him play has given me a new motivation to pick the slide back up 😂
Yes!! my favourite episode is back, thank you
Dan is really great teacher!
Whats the Fred McDowell song he starts playing around 6min? Sounds really familiar :)
No Johnny Winters here but great fun and good to see the guys having a go and a heap of fun.
Delta Blues forever! 😈
2:15 is pure gold 😅
I learned something I was shakey on. That's always a good thing❤
Damn, so good. I think I need an acoustic now😂
hell yeah, ive never seen this one!!
Incredible
Great epp dudes 🤘
MASSIVE INSPIRATION TO OUR BAND
Looks like some RL Burnside finger technique
Wow I'm pretty sure I've watched Guitar moves since it started and just watched him play in Chavez, very cool a much more confident player on stage than on this show.
Guitar moves. Thank you
If/when there are new episodes of this, it would be amazing to see an episode with G E Smith!
Still remember this one from when it was first released. Really sweet!!!
Sweeny trying to play with the slide is how I sound trying to play anything 😅
The best fucking line “Rl used g alot “ gahddamn right.
These guys definitely share a distant cousin.
9:01 Please can someone tell me the name of this song???
Matt his so hilariously miserable here, but so good spirited all the same
Is the riff he plays from 0:54 from a song? Help!
Freight train blues by Mississippi Fred McDowell
@@calebtorres2491 amazing thanks

Auerbach was so thin I almost didn't recognize him.
Same
I'm playing along and these guys are tuned to open C#
Guitar moves!
Pretty sure I got myself a brass slide right after watching this the first time

Duncan Price has been doing some fascinating exploring with polyphonic sustainers and fretless necks

Good stuff! How is the guitars tuned from 6.00min?
Open D bud then it jumps to open G around 9:00
@@ShinyRacer22Thanks😊 Tried with open D around the part from 6min, where he plays the beautiful chord. Can’t seem to get the right tune.
You gonna repost the Jake bugg episode? I’d appreciate it!
The bugg episode was gold, just watching that video taught me the basics of flamenco
Great but we kinda need a new one.
I'm sure it's coming after the original ones are re-uploaded
Agreed. Do a Trey Spruance guitar moves.
This one, for me, is up there with the Dean Ween episode. Top draw stuff
Peaches ….
What’s the first song they are playing?
RL Burnside - Peaches
These are some Skip James and Fred McDowell licks
🔥
RIP RL BURNSIDE
Its been a while...
A beginner should start with the slide on their ring finger in my opinion. Pinky is harder to control at first
Oh Black Mattie, aint got change of clothes
So fuckin cool
I don't play slide. 😎
Sweeney needs a beer
Slide guitar looks easy. It is anything but easy.
This episode has a lot of TWANG in it lol
Shut the front door 😮
Fahey is one of my favourite acoustic players. Spent many years trying to learn his travis picking alternating bass style
Dan is such a good player
Matt im sorry but you look like Rami Malek playing Freddy Mercury
why sweeny look like zombo
I'm not sure about the black keys
Good to know
They’re generic
you probably havent listened to their 2002-2008 shit then
I’m not sure about you, bud.
This man is not in open d
Everything is a half step down from what they say. Open C#
Practice
Dan’s kind of a dick, I felt like that seger reference would never end.
Lost alot of respect for the black keys after how they spoke about John Fusciante on the JRE.
For what? Flea and john refused to shake their hands. Shouldn’t you have lost respect for frusciante?
they weren't even being disrespectful to him lmfao they were complimenting him
This guy augments the seventh
they were poking fun grow up lmao
what did they said?
That guy makes it look easy.it ain't. I tried hard at Bron y raur Stomp. Open D.
