Although I mainly fly VR too, it's always an eye opener to go back to a big monitor with TrackIR and enjoy the insane framerates a 4090 can give, along with the incredible sharpness. Flying low and slow over places like Rome with everything on Ultra in a chopper you can see every brick in the buildings. As I have the monitor up close on my desk, the field of view is really good too.
Mark. I'm kinda like you. Retired, Yea. A simmer. Got three, X-Plane 11, X-Plane 12 and MSFS 2020. I also have changed different screen configs. I recently got the Quest 2, about a year ago, and that's become the prime display for flight simulation. My 46" is now the prime backup for flight simulation. Wish the large monitors were around, and affordable decades ago. LOL I know what you're on about, when you talked about burn in. I had a 3 gun, CRT tube type projector, which put out a 100" image, but was a beast to calibrate the convergence on. I watch tons of NASA TV, and back in the day, (in the 90s), I watched so much NASA TV on it, the meatball logo did burn in. So, no matter what I watched, it was like every program had a watermark logo of the NASA meatball logo on it. LOL I miss that projector. I did run some simulations on it, but that was back when the best sim in town was flight sim 95, and 98, on a Pentium II, and III. LOL Thanks for the video.
I just swapped out my 55" LG CX oled for a 77" C3. I have my Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo, along with my Tobii eyetracker on a small portable desk about 8 feet back, and it's fantastic.
@@SimHangerFS Haha - well, it's in my living room, hence the need for a portable table that can easily be moved into position for simming, and stowed away for couch time. But, yeah, the giant TV is pretty nice! I'd love to have a permanent cockpit solution like your Next Level Racing setup, but I'd need another room to do it. Love your channel. Your videos are very helpful!
congrats on the retirement Mark! I have been wanting an OLED for a looong time, ever since the switch from CRT monitors. I have been dissatisfied with the whole era of LCD monitor panels.
Im playing fs on xbox series x with a 75 inch Samsung Qled 4K tv. While playing, I am quite close to the tv, and it totally absorbs me in the tv..lol. I am not a technical simmer, but it gives me always the feeling I am on my way to my next holiday destination... difference is that at home I dont need to empty my pockets for securitychecks, no long waiting lines and way better food 😉
I currently use two curve shape Spectre monitors side by side. My next monitor upgrade will be a 40+ inch curved monitor. I use Grass Monkey tracking headset which is just as good as VR, imo.
48" is simply too large for my desk space. However, I recently saw video that Samsung is due to release a 39" 21:9 curved ultrawide OLED sometime in 2024. I'll be very interested in that....
For my new Rig I went for for the Gigabyte M28U, 144hz 4k 28". Considering I sit really close to the screen this was perfect sweet spot for me. Mine was about £550 which in my view is expensive just for the screen but coupled with my 7800X3D and 4090 its an absolute joy!
Flatscreens sizes don't matter if you only fly in VR. My main sim pc is connected to a Sharp 55' 4K LCD tv @60Hz but only look at my LCD screens in my Hp Reverb G2 V1 screens ;-)
I am presently running Flight Simulator on a 1920X 1200 26 in Samsung display. I have a I-9 12Ghz 128 Gig ram PC I am considering a 43" Sony with 120 hz 4K TV or Meta VR goggles. How do you compare the overall Experience when space and cost are major factors. thanks for any feedback
I'm using a 48 OLED and loved it until I got a VR headset. Since then I just can't bring myself to fly in 2D, however fantastic my LG 48 is... Something to consider during the decision process.
@@tobynorris5074 I went for a price conscious HP Reverb G2. I found it offers a good price/performance ratio. That said if I had to buy one today the Pimax Crystal would be awfully tempting (if budget allows). Mark our host here has several great videos on VR so I suggest starting with that.
I've just invested in a 55" oled 4k c1. I've been using a g2 for a Yr or so, I love vr do much, but only having a 3080ti I want to get the tobii 5 and enjoy the sim in 4k. I hope I can enjoy in its own way. Need a new tv for footy anyway, so won't be too bummed if I can't enjoy it after vr.
Hi Mark! Congrats with the retirement !!! I myself has been retired since July 2017, and are enjoying every day to the fullest 😊 One question: As you have tried it all, what will you recomend, one big monitor (like yours), or a multi monitor setup, like 3 x 27’’ OLED monitors??
@@SimHangerFS Ok, thank you for your answer. I’ll probably go for the three monitor setup. I think, due to the space available, that I’ll be to close to a big monitor like yours 😊
I may be wrong, not yet having reached the VR stage, but I believe that people with limited vision in one eye, may struggle to gain the benefit of VR. The point being, a large decent physical screen (or screens) is probably the best option in that case. I mention this because my better half has limited vision in one eye, but enjoys watching the Flight Sim on screen, and occasionality flying too. That's one reason why I have not yet gone to VR, and have worked on using screens instead. Obviously, if I win the lottery, all bets are off, and it's off to the VR Shop I will go!
Thanks for the confirmation, suspected that was the case, but good to have it confirmed. My wife cannot also, for example, and for the same monocular reason, gain any benefit from 3D Glasses.
A note to the producer. Try cutting the bass on your microphone. All I hear on my tv is a rumble of lower frequencies in your voice. They tend to take over as you speak so softly and the microphone probably is set to some general setting, picking up and amplifying too low frequencies. It sounds ok on a phone, but you need to remix your content for tv, cutting out the exaggerated low frequencies in the voice.
Hi Mark, thanks for the great video. I was wondering how high the top of the screen is above your eye level or where is the centre of the screen relative to eye level. I have a 49" LG 4K TV but have been raising and lowering it to see what is best for Track IR and comfort of neck/head. Congrats on the retirement, I did the same and don not regret it, cheers.
recent news from LG was burn-in warranty coverage of OLED monitors... but not TVs. Have a 2019 C9 65" but where it's mounted doesn't work for sim and TV use. OLED monitors seem to have better OLED cooling to reduce risk of burn-in. DP over HDMI is great for 120+ Hz ability. Mark, do you use frame generation DLSS too on this or TAA?
Retired! 😳 You dont look old enough yet Mark! ...congrats nonetheless 😀👍 Amazing looking screen you have there ... Was wondering how far away from the screen are you sitting? ...in regards to your tobbi eye tracker . Its movement is very smooth compared to the way mine reacts ( fast and a bit jumpy), Ps. I got confirmation today that my pimax crystal is on its way! 😊 Thanks for the video 👍
Hello Mark, i have a 25x HP monitor but woukd like to upsize. My PC is an AMD 5800x3d and RTX 3060ti. What would you recommend. I would use the 25x for simbrief, navigraph, maps etc.. Thanks Ken
ATM I am using the Samsung Odyssey 49" curved G9, not happy with it primarily because of the limited vertical visibility when compared to horizontal wideness. I am about to order the 42" version of this Asus beast..am I mad?
Hi Mark, first of all, love your channel, keep going with your videos and congrats for your retirement! After watching this video, i ordered this exact same screen for my flight simulator! After spending a lot of time trying to configure it for the best image quality, I'm still not sure if i did right. Could you make a video with everything you configured to achieve the best experience in flight simulator? Please, that would help me a lot! (Wich cable connection you use, hdmi or DP, hdr on or off, contrast, brightness, gsync, wich setting you have in Nvidia control panel, the settings of the monitor, etc etc) Please help me, my colors looked wash out when i turn HDR on. Thank you very much!
@@SimHangerFS thanks for the reply Mark! I tried that, but I have a 3070 unfortunately 😅 and with gsync on I see flickering, I've read a bit about the problem and seems like my GPU can't keep up with the refresh rate of the monitor or something.. didn't understood quite good.. if you have a solution I'll be very thankful if you share! Cheers!
Mine is a 75" (but still I wish it was even bigger). Eye tracker doesn't appeal to me.. You turn your head... but you have to turn your eyes in the opposite direction to be able to still see the screen, wich is higly strange and unnatural (it would be oke if the screen would move in the direction your head is turning..but that's a bit difficult to do with a 75" tv..
Enjoy your retirement. I am retiring next January got to wait two years for the state pension but I have planned ahead so going for it. Looking forward to lots of flight sim. The only downside is my wife has purchased a new caravan we are going travelling apparently. Had OLED 55” for two years as well as VR, never had burn in issues but only use it for flight sim. Keep up the videos we do look forward to them.
Hi Mark, after seeing this video I went and got myself a 45 inch LG Ultra Gear curved 29:1 (3440 x 1440) monitor of which I’m basically very happy with. I do have one question however, and I wonder if you have come across this before, and that is although the curvature looks very nice, I do find that the cockpit instrument panel is slightly curving and I’m wondering if this is a trick of my eye or there is some kind of vertical alignment I need to do? Would you have any idea on this please? As I say it’s a bold curvature so it is quite curved. Thank you for your time in advance.
My Monitor is not curved so not sure. You will get some minor distortion towards the edges on a curved monitor, the degree will very much depend on your resolution. The higher the resolution the less distortion will be evident.
Hi Mark! I have a quick question for you: 1. Are you overclocked to 138Hz? If so, do you get the constant screen turn off, especially when switching windows? I read, I believe on Reddit, where it was suggested to bring it back to 120Hz for now until probably a new firmware fixes this issue. Looks like a lot of people are having this issue. 2. Have you tried MSFS in HDR? What has your experience been like, if you have used it? Also, how is it with watching HDR content including RUclips HDR videos? For me, for night flights, it's extremely awesome but for sunrise/sunset, especially just at the very beginning when the sun is at or slightly above eye level, the clouds look a bit weird. What is your experience? For me, I've tried playing with ultra settings at 110-123 FPS on 4K HDR, but recording at ultra settings on OBS Studio brings it down to around 80 FPS with all ultra settings, TAA, Frame Generation ON, and terrain LOD at 300. With the new NVENC AV1 codec, the file size is pretty small and the image is very good and almost no dropped frames. Usually with NVENC H264, the file size for an hour & a half SDR video for me @60 FPS was usually around 70GB+ using CQP 14, but with the new NVENC AV1, I tried CBR and 70,000 kbps and HDR @60 FPS (actual sim was running at 80-90 because of FlightControlReplay + OBS), and the file size was just 36.4GB. Please could you share your experiences and maybe any tips you might have? Thanks for your time.
Hi all, guessing whether it'd better to get a 43" 4K TV 120Hz tu watch at 2 mt distance, or a 32" 4K monitor 120Hz with my eyes far 100cm from the screen. I really don't want troubles and fatigue for my eyes, but having already tried the 2 alternatives no doubt that the monitor choice is really inmersive
I just took delivery on a new 4090 equipped PC and am waiting on a Pimax Crystal. I've considered a new big screen monitor as well. I am familiar with VR because I have an original CV-1. But I have never seen FS in VR. I do think the time for that move has finally arrived. I've pretend landed in Google Earth VR many times.
I’m trying to decide which monitor to get now I’ve got a complete simpit and the decision comes down to the one you got or the 42/48in C4 (I was using a 27in LG Ultragear on the desktop but it’s a bit small now). I’ve had a 48in C2 for a couple of years as my normal tv and Xbox monitor … I love it! It’s been a year since this video so I’d really like to know whether you’d still get the 48 over the 42in, and whether you’d still choose this one over the C4. Cheers.
Nice monitor. I have a 32" curved screen and also use an 85" TV as a monitor for games like GTA, but all of my flight simming is done with a VR headset so the monitor is unimportant.
Mark, I really like your Old Guys Rule T-Shirt collection. I do have a question for you. I also have the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 and a Pimax Crystal headset. However I do not have access to the Pimax Beta Software. What I am concerned about is does the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 conflict with the Tobii Eye Tracker within the Pimax Crystal? Do you have to disconnect one to run the other successfully? I am hoping that is all that would be required, but I thought I would ask you since you have the experience. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the Pimax software to enable Eye Tracking and DFV. Supposedly that will not be released until September. Thanks in advance and Cheers!
@@SimHangerFS Thank you Mark for that information. You also mentioned in the video that if you have an AMD based Motherboard that you need to disable the onboard graphics in the the BIOS. I looked over my BIOS for my ROG Strix X670E-E and searched the manual and cannot find where to do that in the BIOS. I did see in Windows Device Manager where I could disable the device. Is that what you meant? If not could you give mea hint on where to look in the BIOS please? I am very grateful for your advice and recommendations over the years.
Hi Mark, a quick question about your monitor if I may, how is it mounted and are the mounting screw holes proud on the back as opposed to being in a sunken square designed to fit a square vesa bracket. I’d hope to use Next Level Racing universal mounting bars that then hook over the rugby goal type stand. Regards Andy
Hey Mark, great video, as always. I hope you don't mind me asking your opinion, I've been looking closely at buying this monitor but there are just two things I am concerned with. Firstly I have seen another review of the monitor and the guy was saying that he gets regularly a pop up message which alerts the viewer about burn in. I would find that really irritating, do you have this issue? Also, I am looking for a monitor that doesn't display the 'feature' of auto dimming, when the screen will adjust the brightness according to the scene, I find this extremely annoying on our TV at home. I read somewhere that this Asus monitor has the ability to turn it off. Have you seen this? Thanks.
Hello Mark, can I please ask if you use the Warthog extension on your warthog joystick in your NLR Pro set up to give it a bit more height? Also do you think you’d be able to connect a Honeycomb A & B plus a Warthog joystick and warthog throttle at the same time? If it’s possible my plan is to make an empty profile for each within MSFS and essentially only ever having 2 live profiles working at once so one throttle doesn’t interfere with the other and the same for the joystick and yoke. Do you think this would work please?
Congratulations on retirement Mark. Now you have time to do some real work ! 🙂 Next purchase (or even better, a "sponsored" review) is a game changing full motion simulator.
Has anyone have advice on flat screen vs. curved screen monitor comparison for same width? Is it worth the extra cost to go with a curved screen monitor for flight simulation?
I'd say they typically don't have enough vertical real estate for a traditional cockpit view. They tend to be very wide, but their height is lacking. You end up with a huge horizontal fov but the height of a 24 or 27 inch monitor.
Congrats to your retirement👍🏼 As i understand, this monitor wouldn’t be suitable for Xbox, as it supports only G-Sync. Xbox needs AMD Freesync for VRR to work. Or i’m completely wrong🤷🏻♂️😏
My monitor is a 70 inch 4K TV and playing MSFS on it just feels like I'm watching a RUclips video. It's nice to have the additional clarity but I don't feel like I'm flying the sim at all. I don't have a Tobi eye tracker however. VR all the way for me. I imagine that monitor is lovely for web browsing and general PC usage though!
For a Burn in free experience buy a QLED, not an OLED I paid 2399 for a 60 Inch OLED I had to sell it on eBay for spares after 18 months constant logos on tv channels burn-in

77’’…now that is boasting 😂
I am not a technical simmer, but it gives me always the feeling I am on my way to my next holiday destination... difference is that at home I dont need to empty my pockets for securitychecks, no long waiting lines and way better food 😉
lol
I currently use two curve shape Spectre monitors side by side. My next monitor upgrade will be a 40+ inch curved monitor. I use Grass Monkey tracking headset which is just as good as VR, imo.
it looks amazing
48" is simply too large for my desk space. However, I recently saw video that Samsung is due to release a 39" 21:9 curved ultrawide OLED sometime in 2024. I'll be very interested in that....
Also a big screen like that with track IR or tobi Eye tracker increases the immersion up a notch
I’d have a blackout blind up to darken the room for more immersion.
Me 2.. It sure helps ;)
What's the distance between your eyes and the 28" screen?
Congratulations on your retirement 🎉🎉!!!! I definitely understand!
Hey! Great video! I also have the same monitor! I LOVE IT - your right it's a big purchase but worth every penny. Stunning!
Great and very informative video
FYI: during the segments in your cockpit sim videoed on your phone, the audio only had the left channel active. Right channel was silent.
Yes, noted on screen in the video. My error 😢
Nice Monitor ❤👌👍
I play msfs with Xbox and lg c2 60" with tb rudders and flight stick. It's sooo amazing
I bought 55” 4K TV and it’s great. I enjoy VR but it’s better using a screen with a Tobii if I’m flying with Vatsim
Flatscreens sizes don't matter if you only fly in VR. My main sim pc is connected to a Sharp 55' 4K LCD tv @60Hz but only look at my LCD screens in my Hp Reverb G2 V1 screens ;-)
I currently use a 55 and can’t wait to buy the big boy 85. Big views, big sounds, big fun! murca..🤣
I'm considering VR and am using a very good screen at present, What headset did you jump to they beat it please?
Retired and flying at home : sorted!
I occasionally drag my PC to the living room to play on the 65" LG OLED in 120Hz with GSync. It's so much more immersive.
Hello mark i have the Samsung Ark 55 and it’s a game changer !
This channel is getting naughtier by day..
😱
Hi Mark! Congrats with the retirement !!! I myself has been retired since July 2017, and are enjoying every day to the fullest 😊 One question: As you have tried it all, what will you recomend, one big monitor (like yours), or a multi monitor setup, like 3 x 27’’ OLED monitors??
That's a matter of personal preference, I like the single big monitor as cockpit feels life size, but three monitors are arguably more immersive.
@@SimHangerFS Ok, thank you for your answer. I’ll probably go for the three monitor setup. I think, due to the space available, that I’ll be to close to a big monitor like yours 😊
Congrats on the retirement, Mark!🎉🥳
I may be wrong, not yet having reached the VR stage, but I believe that people with limited vision in one eye, may struggle to gain the benefit of VR. The point being, a large decent physical screen (or screens) is probably the best option in that case. I mention this because my better half has limited vision in one eye, but enjoys watching the Flight Sim on screen, and occasionality flying too. That's one reason why I have not yet gone to VR, and have worked on using screens instead. Obviously, if I win the lottery, all bets are off, and it's off to the VR Shop I will go!
2D is definitely better for those with restricted vision in my opinion
Thanks for the confirmation, suspected that was the case, but good to have it confirmed. My wife cannot also, for example, and for the same monocular reason, gain any benefit from 3D Glasses.
A note to the producer. Try cutting the bass on your microphone. All I hear on my tv is a rumble of lower frequencies in your voice. They tend to take over as you speak so softly and the microphone probably is set to some general setting, picking up and amplifying too low frequencies. It sounds ok on a phone, but you need to remix your content for tv, cutting out the exaggerated low frequencies in the voice.
Thanks will take a look
@@SimHangerFS Really like the content, except for my hangup, keep it going! 🙂 Nice to see grownup’s on the tube!
My eye level is about 60% - 65% vertically up from the bottom of the monitor
Great video, that monitor looks real nice. Would you say the single large screen is better than a smaller triple setup, say 3x32" screens??
Depends on your personal preference.
recent news from LG was burn-in warranty coverage of OLED monitors... but not TVs.
I use TAA
The ultimate size must be a monitor that shows the actual size of the cockpit, I wonder how big it must be to recreate that view?
Very good point, still searching for a realiable and reality based answer 😉
Currently I have a 55 inch TV. I´m considering to buy a 75 inch TV. Is it too big? Overkill?
Bigger…is always better 😂
Retired! 😳
You dont look old enough yet Mark! ...congrats nonetheless 😀👍
Amazing looking screen you have there ... Was wondering how far away from the screen are you sitting? ...in regards to your tobbi eye tracker .
Its movement is very smooth compared to the way mine reacts ( fast and a bit jumpy),
Ps. I got confirmation today that my pimax crystal is on its way! 😊
Thanks for the video 👍
I’m just over 1 metre away
Hello Mark, i have a 25x HP monitor but woukd like to upsize. My PC is an AMD 5800x3d and RTX 3060ti.
What would you recommend. I would use the 25x for simbrief, navigraph, maps etc..
Thanks
Ken
Forgot to say, 1080p existing monitor and happy to stay with this resolved for new monitor or should I go yo 1440p?
Thanks again
@@KenJones-q1j 27'' & 32'' are most commonly used, get 1440p would be my advice, you can always opt to change resolution to 1080p if you wanted to.
Why not just try short throw 4k projector in the 100-150" screen sizes?
Many are same or prived under $1,000
That’s also an option 🫡
ATM I am using the Samsung Odyssey 49" curved G9, not happy with it primarily because of the limited vertical visibility when compared to horizontal wideness. I am about to order the 42" version of this Asus beast..am I mad?
Mark, will this monitor mount to a TV stand with VESA mount? It looks like yours does.
Mine is mounted on a NextLevelRacing monitor stand. It does have a VESA mount but check on specs in your area as it does vary.
I use DP port. HDR off, gsync on with my 4090. 🙂
Cheers!
@@ProzFly2104 in the monitor menu you can turn down the refresh rate. Suggest in your case select 60Hz. Try Gsync off.
75''...okay size does matter then 😂
Enjoy your retirement.
You’ll have to get a big screen laptop for your travels 😂
Hi Mark! I have a quick question for you:
Have you noticed a issue with Auto-dimming with the OLED?
no i havent, but assume this is config in the settings
I’m running a next level racing cockpit with a 55 inch
Cheers.
@@Snaerffer yes I would still go for 48’’. In todays market I’m not sure but think the C4 would win out.
niceee, I have and ASUS 43 inch :)
Nice monitor. I have a 32" curved screen and also use an 85" TV as a monitor for games like GTA, but all of my flight simming is done with a VR headset so the monitor is unimportant.
Mark, are they any issues with eye strain on this monitor that you know of?
None that I am aware of, but havent used it that much yet for sessions longer than about 2.5 hours, so can't really say.
When using the Crystal, disable the Tobii via the software app…it does conflict.
@@jimharrison405 Advanced -> AMD CBS -> NBIO Common Options -> GFX Configuration -> iGPU Configuration, switch to iGPU_Disabled
@@jimharrison405 Depending on your BIOS version it could also be here : Advanced > NB Configuration and then disable it in there
Hi Mark, a quick question about your monitor if I may, how is it mounted and are the mounting screw holes proud on the back as opposed to being in a sunken square designed to fit a square vesa bracket. I’d hope to use Next Level Racing universal mounting bars that then hook over the rugby goal type stand. Regards Andy
I am using the same monitor stand. Mounting holes are flush with the back of the monitor.
Luvly , I'll be right over and I will bring the popcorn lol
🤣
Thanks.
Haven’t seen the pop up and have turned auto dimming off.
excellent. Thanks Mark
it does matter for your fps I would think?
Thats why I opted for G-Sync compatible, reduces chance of tearing.
@@SimHangerFS I understand it reduces tearing, I use freesync for this. But I am afraid that not everyone knows the more pixels the less fps.
Hi Mark, how do you think three of those monitors would work out?
Expensive! 🤣 I can only imagine the awesome life size view!
It’s a 4k , but can they be tuned as 2 k if needed for the side two?
@@daveyoung2056 yes you can do 1080p, 1440p and 4K.
@@SimHangerFS Thanks Mark
Did you consider a curved screen, like the new G9 8k?
I didn’t actually…could be awesome if it has the vertical height.
Yes I do 👍. No extension needed for me.
32" inches is enough for me, but I would love an OLED.
I am curious if you tried ultrawide monitors? I find them extremely immersive due to increased natural FOV.
Yes I have, but only up to 34”
@@SimHangerFS I think you chose a great screen - OLED is amazing. 38" ultra wide at 3840x1600 is how I MSFS but would like an OLED eventually.
@@guillaume_69 point well taken. Thanks.
Qled is nice as well.
I have the Aorus F048U for over a year and will never go back
You need three of these for full 2D immersion 😅
And deep pockets 🤣
Now you just need 2 more of these positioned on either side and you almost have a level D sim. 😁
Lol….and deeper pockets 😂
Congrats to your retirement👍🏼 As i understand, this monitor wouldn’t be suitable for Xbox, as it supports only G-Sync. Xbox needs AMD Freesync for VRR to work. Or i’m completely wrong🤷🏻♂️😏
G-Sync can be disabled and it will work as standard monitor.
If you’re trying to get 120 Hz out of a 4K monitor, you must have an 8K DP cable.
VR is great, but you don't see your gear. I prefer a big screen!
For a Burn in free experience buy a QLED, not an OLED I paid 2399 for a 60 Inch OLED I had to sell it on eBay for spares after 18 months constant logos on tv channels burn-in
48’’ is big at all
