And that's because the Yellowstone volcano is located deep within a landmass where the magma contains high levels of melted continental rock which is much thicker than that of most other volcanic magmas, such as those of volcanoes in the sea or on continental margins. The thicker magma moves more sluggishly and better traps explosive gases from escaping. The trapped gases build up to very powerful levels. The volcanoes of Hawaii are on the complete opposite end of the scale, being much more fluid and easy flowing, allowing the various gases to escape. In the middle are the volcanoes whose magmas contain a mix of continental rock and oceanic rock. Oceanic rock is comprised of a dense/heavy rock type called basalt, while lighter continental rock is generally of a mineral composition more akin to granite, whether igneous, sedimentary, or metaphoric.

I view Yellowstone erupting the same way I view nuclear war - if it happens, I'll be dead. So there's really no point in worrying about it. Albeit Yellowstone would kill me much more slowly than a nuke would (unfortunately I live near a military base - if the blast radius doesn't get me, radiation poisoning will).
Although as long as Old Faithful continues going off, an eruption is extremely unlikely. Yellowstone is constantly bleeding off pressure. I'd only start actually worrying about it if that stops.

Newer people from less geologically active places usually feel anything over a 4 on the Richter scale. So you probably just didnt notice because they were small. India is the antipetal point of mexico (exact opposite side of the globe) so the seismic waves caused by the impact would have constructively interfered at that point. Some geologists think that was enough to disrupt and heat the upper mantel, lower crust to cause massive volcanism. This volcanism lead to what is called the Deccan Traps in india.

Also the USGS and more importantly The YGO which is the part of the USGS that monitors Yellowstone has in the past ten years have stated multiple times that the magma chamber is in creasing enough at a depth of 22 miles to raise surface elevation 3 inches. Takes quite a bit of pressure to raise 22 miles of mantle 3 inches. They have also stated in the past that raising and subsidence of edges of a caldera is concerning and could be indicative of an eminent eruption. An eruption of any supervolcano would result in immediate death of up to 150 miles, delayed death of 1000 and global dimming that would result in crop loss world wide.

@@TheRickie41 if magnetic field reversal was the cause of supervolcano eruptions were fact then all of the eruptions of these calderas and the field reversals would be synchronous. They are in fact not on the same timeline to each other or to the field reversal.
Take Yellowstone. Its last eruption was 650,000 years ago and its cycle is every 600,000 to 800,000 years.
While the magnetic field reverses on average every 200,000 to 300,000 years.
There has been zero evidence of all supervolcanoes erupting at once nor it coinciding with field reversals. Again.
If the theory were true the last eruption would be synced with the last field reversal which it isnt.

Listen self appointed know it all, I agree on certain parts about channels putting forth false data, but most of the data in this particular video is actually very accurate. Until the magma chambers are 40% + molten....there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Even considered all that other crap you mentioned, if there's not enough magma to create far more gas and hence pressure.....a super eruption is not possible. Most likely we will see many small eruptions over 100s of years before a buildup to a super eruption. Also, THERE IS NO TIMETABLE for a super eruption. I'm so sick and tired of people saying IT'S OVERDUE!! Like it's a clock. Many factors have to align for it to happen. For whatever reason, the chambers are not heating up as fast as they did for other eruptions. So for brain cells sake....drop the stupid conspiracy theory. @@chrish6412 not sure what you mean by "evolution of the planet", as planets are big lumps of rock that do not evolve, but species can _absolutely_ affect the evolution of other species. coevolution is a thing, and it is at least a hypothetical possibility that coevolution could occur on a planetwide scale.
also not sure what you mean by "proven to the point of hypothess". i assume "hypothess" is a typo of "hypothesis", and by their very nature, hypotheses are not proven. they are educated guesses that are later proven or disproven.

I am a big fan of awesome geological features, events and explorations ! The planet ceases to be a fixed feature entity in the minds of those of us that feast on the expanding knowledge of our planets past and future ! I have been up close to some ! Including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, glaciers in the Alps, gorges by kayak in France and dramatic shores all around Europe.. I hope to visit the three gorges area in China, where my son works, having got a feel for how India bulldozed into Asia creating the Himalayas and these precipitous valleys side by side running north south, each with special ecosystems ! I got the habit of checking out the three dimensional geologic history of landscapes from living six years in Switzerland and skiing and kayaking .....The Alpes have a sort of mini version history similar to the Himalayas, Italy having bulldozed north ! When I say mini, I mean gigantic but not so much as India and the Himalaya ! Professional of course do not talk in these romantic ways ! They should sometimes maybe, because young people need to know about how dynamic our planet is over time and be able to relate meaningfully to climate change and its probable devastating global impact ! They also benefit from relating to far flung places as dynamically connected over rapid as well as vast time scales. Such as Himalayas global warming glacier Melt, flood threat and population displacement ...or sea level rise , shoreline threats and food source disruptions ! How can they be active citizens on these timescales if they have no such capacity ! I am a retired teacher, not from these subjects, but from design technology. All about the human convenience, efficiency and solutions ? Yes but also about resources and the cost benefit considerations that can be scaled up to precisely such issues ! The subject teaches the principle that there are many solutions to the same set of problems. That has ideological and political implications way beyond the confines of artefact design !

Interesting thought I just had: so, if the continental shelf is moving west does that mean the hotspot would eventually be beneath the Appalachian mountains? If so, would that be enough pressure to "pop the balloon"? Could that be why North America has two major mountain ranges, with a giant plains region between them, with major eruptions essentially causing a "continental caldera"?
