Interesting they say that heavy things resting on trees make them grow bent. I've always been impressed at the way trees in fence lines or walls actually grow around the obstructions without pushing them out of the way. I believe that depends on a lot of factors, but one of the most notable ones might be the fact that all of those items are made of narrow metal bars and thin metal wire or rods. Importantly, nothing larger than a tree trunk and often with enough space for branches to wrap around. Note a tree planted too close to an outdoor canopy, something that would take a lot of force to hold up, let alone push. The tree will avoid it altogether.
@@devonstaggs9470 I don't get your point: most of these things were bigger than the tree/or mushroom, when it started growing, but there are also many hedgerow trees you will find with fence wires right through them. I've seen pictures on line, of bikes sticking out of trees they were supposedly lent against and forgotten, but I'd have to double check they weren't photo shopped these days. On an atomic scale, you might like to read up on the physics of policemen and their bikes, in Ireland, in Flann O'brien's surreal musings in his 'The Third Policeman'. They do disturb things given enough time,😂trees fall on buildings daily, roots break into basements or break up concrete, some trees got some force after a couple decades
That's a kind of bias, if you will. These 'funky' trees are often left standing specifically because of their funky look/way they wrapped around stuff. As a non-mobile organism a tree needs to deal with what it was given/where it is growing. Additionally, they can't really choose all that well in what direction they grow to and that flexibility will differ between species. Some can deal with leaning a bit... others really can't. Gymnosperms for example are quite 'basic' when it comes to the structure of their wood. They tend to have a very clearly dominant 'tip' and can reach intense heights by going straight up. And they will grow around other stuff like crazy - because it's the only possible way to stay stable. The drawback is: these points of enclosure are a wound. They will always be a possible entry point for pathogens and a weak point in the next storm. So the plant would rather not... but has to. Angiosperms on the other hand... they will just push through rock and burst it, if they are adapted to life in a rocky place with little soil. Or just die if they prefer something more mulchy... plants come in so many versions and with so many abilities... it's pretty much impossible to say 'trees do xy' and not leave some of them out. Mushrooms are different though. The parts we see/eat are functionally more similar to fruits, not 'the main organism itself' and are pushed out within days. They grow by piling on cells on top and of course anything they'd have to 'push up' would mean more energy has to be invested... so they don't. They don't care about stability long term. So it's very different from trees. TL;DR: some do, some don't, people like them so they leave them to be happy about their exisetence.

In the mountains here in Wyoming, there are many trees with the same contorted shapes. They are formed by being bent down by heavy snow, then the trunk remains bent, but the top starts to grow back toward the sky the next summer.
We have that here in Colorado too. It happens mostly with the aspen trees, but now and then you'll see some pines that are that way too. There used to be lots of Krummholz near or above tree line, but most of those have been taken by tourists and commercial interests who want to make lamps, coffee tables, and other junkie stuff out of them. Kinda sux. They were nicer in the wild, and were places where alpine birds used to nest.
Yeah my trees are curved from snow also I walk around and braid or twist the small ones if they are super close together one day some one may do a show in that lol.

The second batch of crooked trees that all faced the same direction...the first thing that comes to mind is an explosion leveling them all. It would produce a 90 degree bend and those trees--much smaller back then---would straighten up and continue growing after that. Younger stems are much more resilient to extreme trauma whereas an older grove would be left with a thin strip of live bark connecting the two halves.
The fact that all these weird animals live in such harsh conditions makes it seems really likely there's life in the universe closer to us than we think
I think its an absolute at this point, that there is life elsewhere within our own solar system. Its just a matter of time before we find it. Mars, Venus, Europa, Ganymede, Enceladus, Titan, etc.....who knows? It seems life finds a way, regardless of conditions here on Earth.

I've been to Kawah Ijen recently! Sadly no blue flames, but very impressive. The smell of rotten eggs was really strong and we still stunk of it a few days after it. Lots of fun theories about the Richat structure and Atlantis. It is incredibly easy to find seashells, fishbone fossils, and other stuff all over the place there indicating that it was once underwater and the science is pretty conclusive that it was. Also, Plato wrote about Atlantis and the location he gives is pretty much right where the Richat structure is. If you look at the structure there's a location that kinda looks like it would have been port. Further, very few archeological digs have been done there.

The pumps pumping water out of the cave were turned off and the cave was allowed to flood again in 2015. Two years before this video was uploaded. Odd he didn't mention it. The cave is now once again inaccessible to people, and the crystals have no doubt resumed their happy crystal-growing-ness.

I've seen a grove of weird trees very similar to those described. An entire grove of conifers, all the same age, with an identical 90 degree bend in the trunk pointing in the same direction, but the trunks all did this little spiral before growing straight again. This was in North America though, in the Rocky Mountains in Idaho. I seriously doubt it was done intentionally as I randomly stopped on the side of the highway to rest and just found them there, in the middle of nowhere.
I found a small spot maybe 50 foot around like that near Guerneville, Northern California. Not only were all the trees bent 90 degrees with a spiral twist before going up again. Standing in that area I could lean toward the East without falling down.

I know some people have plans to investigate if the Eye of Sahara could be the remains of the legendary Atlantis. They believe that the area has been raised by tectonic activity and when it was on a lower level it got flooded due to events of the last ice age. They want so see if they can find artifacts in the area, and they think they have found many things about the site that fit with written descriptions of Atlantis. Not only the circular features, but also descriptions of the mountains around it.
Unless you are planning on funding that research, they are probably going to stick with the most likely places for life. Even as wild as these places in the video are, they are still on our life filled planet.
its crazy the things discovered in the earth by mining operations, what is kind of unknown and bothers me greatly is that these operations (even in Nevada) have very little public involvement. I have talked with miners that can attest to coming across vast underground caves with wondrous crystal structures that they blast through to get to what ever deposits they are going for (gold in that Nevada mine). And the companies are rarely owned by the area that is being mined. And.......ugh
To be fair, I doubt the researchers have anywhere near the funding that NASA has. If only there was more interest in the cave that could lead to public funding and innovations in suit technology.

The part about the Dancing Forest reminded me about I once read while researching my ancestor. In Arkansas, USA, the Native Americans used to tie saplings in such a way that they would bend into an L shape. They did this to mark trails. They are called Signal Trees if you want to google any info about them.
Given that my chances of visiting Antarctica remain rather slim, I shall just have to content myself with experiencing Blood Falls vicariously. i.e. by eating roofing nails.
Here's a question/idea for an upcoming video; what if the ocean was freshwater? Granted more of it would freeze, but how much? And the ocean life would be different, but how? And how would it affect the climate? It's an interesting thought.
I don't think the ocean, if it was freshwater, would remain non-salty for long. Considering that there are landlocked lakes that are as salty if not saltier than the ocean, salt accumulation is just part of the environment.
I thought the ocean was freshwater first then billion years of rain washed the salt in the dirt into the ocean; hence the ocean becomes salty. Am I right?
Well if the ocean was freshwater we'd be in an eternal ice age since ocean currents wouldn't exist since they only work due to the salinity of the water which is why melting of ice caps is a big concern because if ocean currents are disrupted we could start another ice age, ocean currents transfer heat all over the world

The Dancing Forest looks almost exactly like a coastal pine forest in my home town Halmstad in Sweden. Here's a video of a walk through it: ruclips.net/video/9xvwtJcy_lg/видео.html The trees start to become twisted at around the 4:10 mark. In the video you can spot several pines with trunks that loop down so much they actually go back into ground, making it difficult (at a glance) in some cases to tell which trees they're actually part of.
There was once a philosophy about why we should care about the ants in the dirt or the worms in the ground. We have all stepped on an ant? Or we all have used a worm as bait? If not literally, figuratively.
sofaking onmynuts I try to not step on ants or any other things that are alive .I hardly ever wear shoes and I have heaps of worms in my soil and if I see one in an unsafe place like where on about dig I move it and if I accidentally hit one while I do the gardening I feel really bad I even relocate poisonous spiders and I'm scared of spiders not to mention I live in Australia and we got some really poisonous things crawling around here but I don't kill them either if I can possibly help it . I've mostly found spiders to be quite agreeable usually unless it's mating season or it's a female with a nest .

I live in a forest with bent trees like that. Black Forest, Colorado is a ponderosa pine forest and the Ute indians that lived in the area purposefully shaped trees with a bend. The horizontal length of the tree before it was allowed to turn back up represented the length of a life. There are other shapes including loops that have different meanings. They are called Ute prayer trees and there are many throughout this area.
By far the weirdest thing about giant crystal cave is the absance of a third physical dimension within the cave. What happened to the 30m×10m caves third dimension remains a mystery as does how the cave is able to continue to exist as a 2d structure within a 3d space. Physicist remain puzzled by the discovery and no speculative hypothesis has yet been made despite the decades of access allowed since its decovery.
Its a joke. Its not possible for a 2 dimensional cave to exist. Caves are natural 3 dimensional voids in the ground and are often irregularly shaped. As such are usually defined in terms of length and overall volume. For example according to online resources giant crystal cave is 109m long and has a volume of 5 to 6 thousand cubic meters. This video describes the cave in terms of an aproximate area (30m x 10m), however as to whether they mean a cross section across one of the principle axis or floor space is not defined. In the context of the video and taking the statement at face value infers that the cave defies nature and has only 2 dimensions thus making it anomalously "weird". Everybody laughs, we all have a good time looking up the cave up on Wikipedia, we're all mildly amused and better informed for the experiance.

Wait! So that water scorpion was a new species found exclusively there!? As a kid I fed worms to two of those in a very dark and stale rainwater barell in our garden for a while. I NEVER ever found anything on the internet about what they were, and I never saw anything like them again, after my dad repurposed the before abandoned barrel. The creatures looked EXACTLY like in this picture. I discovered those by trying to drown a bug in that pitch black water, out of curiosity and because children can be absolutely cruel creatures. 😂 They basically attacked the bug on the water surface and sank down into the abyss with it, presumably eating it.

Could you imagine being one of those miners to break through into the crystal cave, and for the first time ever, see huge 12 metre long crystals

In the mountains here in Wyoming, there are many trees with the same contorted shapes. They are formed by being bent down by heavy snow, then the trunk remains bent, but the top starts to grow back toward the sky the next summer.
Called a krummholz.

Here's a question/idea for an upcoming video; what if the ocean was freshwater? Granted more of it would freeze, but how much? And the ocean life would be different, but how? And how would it affect the climate? It's an interesting thought.
Kyle Cherry try posting this on r/AskScience
Anassor Bestiak Is it SciShow's Reddit?

Just supports the theory that those shapes were manmade as well (but forgotten about before they got rediscovered)

Is this a joke that’s going over my head? How can anything exist in only 2 dimensions?

Those huge crystals are so awesome.
Great interesting, but once again producers seem to think I want to watch the host, instead of the contents. Why do you do this?
Wasn't just me then lol
And why do all presenters twitch uncontrollably these days. Are they so afraid that other kids will not pay attention to them unless every part of their body is in motion like an epileptic in an earthquake. I m talking to you simon whistler. Keep the camera above your arms
@@davehallett3128 I tend to be quite active while talking, sorta talking through my hands at the same time, and, like every other person I've seen who does this, it looks pretty close to what Hank does in this video. No idea why but it makes it easier to say my thoughts out loud versus without...
There's a claim that the Richat Structure is the basis for the idea of Atlantis.
👍
Some think it was Atlantis, until the last great Earth catastrophe wiped it out to sea.
@@skulkloe I lean more toward tales of the structure reached Greece and via the telephone game it was either thought to have been a great city or it inspired Plato to make up the idea.
That was fun. Thank you for explaining Doctor Stone lake. 😊❤
down here in Australia we occasionally get Water Scorpions in our swimming pool, as kids we used to call them toe- nippers. they scared the hell out of us.
We just called them water bugs here in America. They are rather terrifying when they end up on your back...
Toe Nipper sounds like it should be an antagonist in a Mad Max movie (the originals, not the reboot).
It would have been really nice to see pictures of the strange animals found in the Russian cave.
The Lake district in N W England contains a denuded anticline from its ancient volcanic ancestry. Looking at its silhouette from our kitchen window about 40 miles south was like looking at a geography textbook diagram.
Are we not going to talk about how Hanks appearance changes with every weird feature? That's kinda weird Hank 😜
this is a crazy feature! my great gramps was an engineer who was part of some of that mining years ago in the caves of Naica, MX 😉
Drinking Game: Everytime he says "million/millions" take a shot.
are trying to get people killed?
😵😵😵😂😂
You'd never make it to the end of the video. Snooore
Nah, I'm good.
I wonder if anybody has ever been thrown in the acid lake.
crispyspa that's a very strange place for your mind to go
bearsemen must be Cersei and Jamie Lannister.
It would be hard to tell. The remains would probably dissolve very quickly. Scary thought. I think I will enjoy this acid lake in pictures only.
The cartels could save a bunch of time/money if so.
That's the sort of thinking that ends with a free swim trip to acid lake.
Subscribed, superb channel!
Pamukkale (Turkish for “cotton castle”) in Turkey is one of the strangest geological structures in the world. I was surprised not to see it here, but there are so many strange places, to be sure.
Thanks Diana for the lovely share.
11:06 "Southern most of the weird places" also bleeds. Do I have to make the jokes for you. Bloodfalls
So, you couldn't provide even one single image of the 'weird creatures' in Movile Cave? Why the heck not?
no light
Infrared images?
Water scorpion was shown at 7:23
Cuz you can google
yeme thats a stupid answer there are many pictures
this is like a breath of fresh air. i was just listening to a voice explaining earth events in three vids, and i could hardly pay attention by the third one. now i know it wasn’t me! whew! :) 🎧
I could binge watch Sci Show for hours. Thanks for the content! Been watching since 2014!
This dudes videos suck. What r u talking about?
18:00 you could just call it Ijen Crater, since 'kawah' is just the indonesian term of a crater :D
@Skunk Ape sure, I will worry about it when people stop replying to a more than half a years old comment.....
@Skunk Ape is that so? what's your point then? arguing over a mere suggestion that's not even worth to argue with? and what does "which bathroom to use" argument even have to do with my original comment in the first place, champ? tell me...
@Skunk Ape also, is really bothers you that much. Yes, you, someone who doesn't even know me at all, that I am "not good" at whatever you are talking about? Tell me about it, champ....
I am curious at how much of a smartass you are.....
@Skunk Ape lol ok Mr Super Genius Professor who would argue so much about translation comment I had up there which I am not even complaning about it (You sure did notice I put the :D emoticon up there, do you?), whatever you say :D. You are the most genius person in youtube I've spotted today, I'm in any way no match for your smartass brain capacity. Good day, "Professor"....
Sure, I will do some coloring books since I am both a graphic designer and an illustrator anyway lol thank you so much for the "super helpful" suggestion, Professor...
12:16 LGR reviews Blood Falls. "The story of Bloods Falls begins around 5 million years ago"
They basically attacked the bug on the water surface and sank down into the abyss with it, presumably eating it.
That was a picture of a giant water bug, not the water scorpion that is found in that cave. They do look similar though, if you look up pictures. You were feeding giant water bugs - if you see one again, do be careful, they have one of the most painful bites of any insect.
You're a crackhead
wrt the dancing forests: theres a patch of forest like that near where i live, it's right by the ocean, and i was always told that they are shaped like that because of the strong but irregular winds from the ocean... either way they're really cool, and there are a couple of them that just happened to have formed in ways that make them work pretty well as benches :) there are also a lot that were very fun to climb when i was a kid
Finally romania is actually congratulated for something and not taunted for having gypsies and vampires
whats Romania?
What do you have against Gypsies?
My favourite DIP40 ATMega board comes from Romania.
Steal less maybe.
That first cave is what nasa needs to use to develop a space suit for mercury and/or venus
It...kinda rains acid on Venus if I recall properly and...
Always love your interesting and entertaining videos thanks so much for sharing.
