Thank you Harvey. I have been applying for jobs all this summer after studying animation for 6 years. It is very demoralizing to only get one call back and even yet, losing out on the opportunity after the interview. Thanks for reassuring me that I am not alone and this is just a very hard part about the animation career path.

Hey and glad it helped and yeah the longer it take the more demoralising. Try and get mentorship from a professional asap as they will be able to tell you what you’re missing.

Absolutely awesome talk Harvey!! For me it was getting money from any work that I could do, since that alleviated that feeling of suffocation when trying to have income for living, getting a job in the industry and also polishing yourself and your skills to do better every time, it was TOO MUCH! lol
    Much love from Argentina!!

When I have seen the title I said "Oh yeah, this video is definitely a much watch".
Another well made and relatable topic Harvey. I have submitted a lot of reels and learned from other animators live stream answering Q&A's.
I also was forcing the animation software on a basic laptop that bearly run. It was like pushing a stock civic drag racing against a hellcat...it's not petty 😑, but now I finally have a laptop that can run my animation.

I feel like I might be an outlier, but I'm not really as "master" animator yet. I like to think I'm pretty good. But after working in animation, then ditching it due to poor studio conditions and then working in tech support for 7 years and keeping animation as a hobby, I decided to start making stuff to put in a demo reel and start job hunting again.
The stars aligned and after half a year of applying to about 30 places, some indirectly whout formal job postings, I saw a job the day it was posted to WorkWithIndies and I applied. 2 weeks later I got the job at an indie studio, and they liked what they saw because some of the characters in my reel were the same proportions or creature body types as the ones in their game.
I don't know how many people I was up against, they said they got quite a few, but I finished my first week at this studio and it's pretty great.

What a timing!! I applied to one job last week and they have ignore me and my messages since then. It hits hard, I really wanted the job. Dealing with frustration is also part of being an artist.
    Great video as always, Harvey

Ah yes, it hits hard every time Mikel...you get used to it over time and it gets easier to shake it off, unfortunately that rejection feeling never goes away. Thanks for watching and sorry to hear about your rejection, hopefully next time you'll get it. Keep strong!

I am loving the past couple of videos. I am in the applying process and just yesterday was turned down after having done the interview. It stung a bit. While I know it will be a grind to get into the industry. It does help to know that my work is at least worthy of an interview. Making the rejection not hurt so much. But thank you for all the tips and content Harvey!

Ah sorry to hear about the rejection but yes if they asked you for an interview then you're in the right path, it's bound to happen sooner or later...keep strong and thanks for watching!

I am in my 30s and doing my Master’s in Animation and I’m finding it REALLY hard to get a foot in the door. There aren’t many roles that are considered Entry Level and even those that are, have a lot of requirements. I am thinking about Previs because there seems to be more opportunities for Entry Level jobs in that role and I quite enjoy creating Animatics. Do you have any tips on how to create a Previs portfolio?

Glad it was helpful Pilot...and yes I try to tailor my feedback so it applies outside of animation. I hope this servers your well in your journey!

I am in a pretty down situation recently because of the cancellation of the project and losing my job. And a lot of rejection messages from the animator positions that I applied for. But I got interviews for animation-related positions like pipeline artist and mocap technician. Now I am not sure if I should focus on the animator opportunities or doing the jobs that may not able to improve my animation skills directly.

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад

That’s a great questions Jian. I’d say focus on the job that keep your growing as an animator. But sometimes is easier said than done and if you need to find something else (as life is complicated) then do it. Just remember to keep on working on your Animation skills behind the scenes so you can keep applying for jobs that will get you to your goal.

@@harveynewman Thank you! Yeah, I will still keep learning animation even if I get that job. And I would hope to talk with you in our mentorship meeting after I actually receive an offer.
