    Hey Harvey, this is Antoine. Hey great video as always, bro. I really loved the topic and the discussion here. Young Animators really need to (Hear) about things like this when it comes to how the industry really works as far as taking (Test) and all that jazz. Anyway, keep up the great work dude.

      @@harveynewman Definitely, Bro. Hey, keep up the great work with these (VIDs) because you are really helping these (Noobs) and that's a good thing. As an Animator, it's great to pass this type of (Crucial) information back to young Animators who are just starting off in their careers.💪

    I just failed my animation test for an indie game company, and it's uncanny how perfect the timing of this video is. Luckily, they sent me some helpful feedback and I took note of everything. Thank you for these videos Mr. Newman, I will keep on applying as a game animator

    Great video as always. I've never done an animation test in 25 years and I never will. I agreed to do one once for CD Projekt Red but ended up telling them to stick it. Which actually was the decision that should have got me the job. Quicker and more productive to send back terrible mocap data and shoot it again than try to clean up garbage. Animation tests are a sign of a company that isn't really sure what they're doing, or desperate enough to try to shoehorn someone with unproven skills into the role. Either way, your salary is going to be average and they've already demonstrated no respect for your work life balance.

    • @antstar1005
      @antstar1005 2 года назад +4

      I completely agree with this. Being a Veteran Animator myself, I never do (Test) for companies. If don't they want to hire me on my own merits or own my portfolio, then I don't need to work for that company. And even if I was to do a (Test) for a Company, I would make them (pay) for my (Time and Effort) for even doing the test in the first place. Because if you (Don't) get the job because of an Animation test, at least you might get some money out of it for your time. This is just a (Pros /Pros) tip that some young Animators don't even know about. And if the company doesn't pay, then I don't do the test. Never take a job just to be taking a job. This whole test stuff is really for (Juniors) and young people in my humble opinion. Great topic though.

      @@antstar1005 Hey AC when was the last time you did a Test? I figured Dneg had you do a test but you're a true vet brutha.
      I was told by a buddy if mines that says when they make you di a test. It's usually because the company doesn't see anything in your skillset from your reel.
      Also on LinkedIn you posted a video of your student creature cycle. The transitions with the run,trot looked seamless. I can't remember the school or animatir.
      I can't find it in my LinkedIn feed I meant to comment on it. It looked great 👏🏾

      Wow great story man I've always figured it'll help increase your salary offer. But nope as a matter of fact my last test was for Treyarch 4yrs ago. It was to work on blk ops 4.
      I got the contract but damn the salary offer was low. I made up for it in O.T first they didn't offer me the job. Then 24hrs later recruiter contacted me again. They had me do a lunch interview with another team.
      I didn't have to do the test again or b.s interview. The lead & seniors wanted to meet me after I received good feedback from team zombie. It worked out in the end but yeah waste of time test.
      Once the game released 1.5 later everyone's contracted ended. I never got converted to FT at Activision Treyarch. So I left gaming to work on Avatar sequels lol. I have daily & bills like everyone else.
      Plus Craptivision is getting sued anyway but I enjoyed my team. But working on cod forever gets old.

I'll see after Christmas if I can get some money saved up., I have plans to take a few mentorships like Alessandro and JD as well I just want to get a handle on some extra cash first. Hey Harvey! Thank you for the video. Helpful as usual. Until April, I did not work as an animator, I was just studying, then I was offered to do one test task, and everything went well. That's how I got the job the first time. Now I'm a junior animator and someone is suffering while cleaning up my animations. And I am very grateful to them. I have one offtopic question. I have to decide which mentor I should choose in GW 2. I don't see you on the list right now. Should I wait? In gw 1, I'm learning from a Blizzard teacher. They are all very cool, but I want teachers to share their experience with me not only from there, but also from various other studios. Sorry if I use wrong platform to ask this.

    Hey Harvey did your last employer ask for some type of skill test?
    Did you get to animate much in your last role?
    I'm very curious what the hiring process is like for an AD position. I'm sure they'll want to see your demo and review your resume.
    I'll ask JD as well if he hasn't mentioned this in any of his videos. I have a request for a future video that'll be interesting. It's piggybacking off your salary negotiation info.
    Why do people think they're worth more than they say they're regarding skillsets? It'd so egotistical and very annoying. I also think ppl get confused about the roles of an Animation TD vs TD or AD.

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  2 года назад +2

      Hey Brother. Nah as an AD you normally don’t get tests you get hired based on experience and merits over the years. Also you don’t get to animate much, specially when you have a large team. So it’s more of managerial, review and direction, so a test would be of little use to the studio hiring an experienced AD

    Hi Harvey, thanks for the very informative video!
    Actually, have a question I guess it is animation relatable.... are you familiar with what a Technical Animator does? Is it a position that requires programming experience or an animator with some technical skills like rigging and problem solving for working between Maya and a game engine can fit that position? If you are familiar with Technical Animator could you talk about it in one of your videos?
    Great video! Keep up the great work! I am really learning a lot of new things from you =-)
