DISCLAIMERS
This video is not sponsored by any brand, and most of the gear discussed in the video is equipment I personally bought and own. On occasion, however, videos may feature equipment that has been provided by outside brands, which I will always point out. My review of these products are always without bias and are only shown because I would personally recommend their use.
Many of the external links to products in my videos are affiliate links. There is no additional cost to you if purchases are made using these links and those purchases help me continue to provide free content on this channel.
All of the videos you describe for 2024 sound incredible. I’m looking forward to all of them. 🙏🏾
-I’m fascinated and impressed by how you focus on the barrel and would love to see how that works in the field especially for subjects on the move. Maybe some sample footage shown along with your techniques.
-How to get funding and distribution for documentaries
-What are some of your favorite documentaries made by other filmmakers and why?
-How many projects do you work on per year?
-Suggestions of finding mentorship or AC opportunities if we haven’t the film school connections and/or youth on our side!
Thank you so much for your comment! I will absolutely keep these suggestions in mind for next year!
I’m about to purchase a canon c500 mk2. I would like to see some of your best practices when using this camera. I currently have a canon c70 and r5c.
Thrilled for you getting the C500mkii! I absolutely love that camera. I would say the best practices will pretty much be the same as working with C70 or R5, but I would also recommend my 4-part in-depth blog post about the camera on my website: www.mattporwoll.com/in-depth-with-the-c500-mkii-part-1
I have over the years followed so many really talented filmmakers and most have ended up selling their souls to equipment manufacturers. Although I understand why this happens it completely destroys their credibility to me, which is very sad as when they do produce programmes not about products their talent shines through. Please don't let RUclips destroy yours as I have loved all your videos and look forward to many more in the future. PS thank you also for introducing me to Jem Schofield. He is the start of my day before getting down to programme production. Have a great holiday Matt.
I totally hear you on this! My integrity in this industry is incredibly important to me, especially since I am mainly a cinematographer, not a RUclipsr. While I have relationships with various manufacturers and talk about their gear, I will never turn my teaching over to what they want to sell. I will stop making videos before that happens. There will certainly be products I’ll talk about more than others - my relationship with Canon is no secret! But I only do it because I love and use their gear on a daily basis. This is the only kind of product endorsements I would ever do. Something I already own and paid for! I appreciate your following of the channel and look forward to bringing you more of the same!
Also, very cool starting your day with some Jem knowledge! Can’t think of a better way (other than coffee)!
Congratulations Matt Porwoll your channel wins the prestigious Rouben Freeman Channel of the Year Award! I really appreciate your pragmatic approach and detailed explanations. There are many hundreds of videos out there explaining the exact same thing without answering a lot of the questions that arise when you are actually doing it for yourself. As someone who already works in the field it's those small details that are useful to me and help me grow and get better at a job I love. Thankyou
Wow, thank you! Such an honor!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that!
Documentary film making is a world away from the Hollywood stuff. It's good to see a real professional devoting time to explaining this in such an engaging way
Thanks so much!
Thank you Matt! You are the GOAT. I’m always super inspired after seeing your videos
❤️
one of the coolest filmmakers on youtube ! can't wait for 2024
Thank you so much! I’m pretty excited for what’s to come as well :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Matt. Some really good tips and insights. I specifically like the technical vids, but frankly they all have something to offer.
Incidentally....do you ever use a light meter? Be great to have a vid on that if you do. Otherwise jusrt more of the same Matt. It's all great and all useful.
Have a fantastic end of year, and a brilliant 2024.
Thanks so much! I will certainly use a light meter from time to time, but not necessarily on every shoot. I’ll add that to the list for next year!
I have really enjoyed the BTS and watching you put the gear together for an interview. Merry Christmas Matt and all the best in the new year.
Thank you and same to you!
Thanks again my dear friend and I am very excited for the content you will be delivering next year!!! Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower in Panama!
Thank you!!
Thank you for your effort and time that you put into the channel! Hope to see more next year! Stay safe and sound!
Thank you!
Thank you for these great videos. I would like too see videos about funding documentaries and discussions around the topic of legal issues such as copyright.
Thanks so much for your comment. Sadly, since I am strictly a cinematographer, I don’t have much insight into the funding for legal processes… wish I could offer these suggestions, but they are as much a mystery to me as they are to you.
Thank you for taking so much time to educate people you don’t even know. I wish you all the best for 2024 and i look forward to all the exciting new video’s!
Thank you!!
Matt, your channel is a big recent discovery. So glad to have your brain cracked open. I've taken away more than a handful of your techniques and your ideas for my own work.
I really appreciate that!
Merci pour le travail que vous faites et je vous souhaites une bonne année 2024🎉🎬🎬
Cordialement
Jmarc 😎
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the great content, Matt! You’re an awesome resource and looking forward to next year’s videos!
Thank you so much!
Can't believe how much I've learned from you in such a short amount of time. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and can't wait for the content coming next year!
❤️
Thanks Matt keep up the good work it’s always so informative. Wishing you and your family happy holidays!
Thanks Duncan! And the same to you!!
Great Channel! Keep up the fantastic content and have a happy holiday and a great New Year!🎉
Thank you! You too!
I'm very excited for the videos next year!
Thanks!
The “algorithm” recommended your channel to me. Excited to watch more of your stuff and to learn from you! +sub
Thank you!
I learned so much from you just from the 20 videos. Thanks for putting these out. I find the case studies the most helpful, also looking forward to see the camera test video next year! Happy holidays
Thanks so much!
Good job! From what I saw, I understood that you are a serious professional! I wish you success and health!
Thanks so much!
A little bit late to the party, but very grateful that I found this gem (your channel on RUclips). Love the tone and approach to these subjects. Keep up the good work! I would personally love more content on story development at an early stage and communication with fellow collaborators.
Thank you and welcome aboard!
thank you once again, I get a lot of useful things watching your videos, you asked me to ask a question in the comments, so I have one idea for your videos, many documentarians do not have a budget for renting good and expensive cameras or lighting equipment ,it's cool to know your opinion on how to make a documentary on a budget camera, with a minimal group of people. after all, the film is driven by history) thank you again)
Thanks so much for your comment. I would suggest watching my Case Study of Cartel Land. ruclips.net/video/R9OPVGENQd4/видео.htmlsi=CJ2qaEWzmPYicQ6F
This film was made with minimal crew and a very limited camera package with basically zero lighting. I talk about how we made the film with this approach in mind. I’ll also be doing a Case Study on a series I shot, Showtime’s “The Trade” in the coming year that was the same approach. You can see a trailer to that series in my playlist, “My Films - Cinematographer.”
On all video websites in the world
Talking about photography equipment and beautiful girls always gets a lot of attention and likes.
Those channels that focus on talking about professional knowledge and technology always grow very slowly, and some even disappear due to the inability to continuously update content due to real-life problems.
I like your channel very much. The content is very real and not false. I hope to see more of your content in the coming year.
Thank you so much!!
Matt, I would love to see more short content from you. 60 seconds or less detailing small tips for cinematographers. It would help you grow, and be immensely helpful for us!
Awesome, thanks for the suggestion!
I like your plan, and glad you are going to be doing a lot more. As another comment suggested, filming while on the move is something I am working on. Perhaps it's just practice, but the monitor, peaking and barrel technique are practical details that are important. No detail is too small for you to cover!
Otherwise, one random thought is about looks, and how they will become dated. I watched a 1990's era doc recently, and the simpler interview and lighting style really stood out. That makes me think about how the docs we make today will look to viewers 30 years from now. Dark and moody is all the rage these days. I wonder if it will be the mark of an era. What kind of shots will stand the test of time?
Love this, thank you!
Thanks for the video,s , could you do some about your experiences on corporate video,s , if you do them .
Thank you and thanks for all of your comments this year! Unfortunately, I haven't done any corporate videos, but I would have to assume most of the things covered on this channel would apply. It's all about delivering the highest quality content, while only making decisions based on enhancing and communicating the story.
@@matt-porwoll You haven't done any .. maybe thats good :) , but you will be amazed at how short the days are compared to docs ! if you start doing them :) . A lot of interviews thats for sure, often in more challenging locations than docs , ie your in a lot of board rooms or cupboard like bland meeting rooms. But yes same deal , just trying to make stuff look good , but seldom having to really tell a story.
You have to keep in mind
1-You have an international community , try to relate to them; no every one can afford all the high end equipment you have.
2- Try to do set up with low budget equipment; your last videos were focus in all you high end tools you
Be more realistic and practical;
To be honest your light set up for one person is not practical at all.
I know that is the kind of work you do but not everyone have does this high end interviews.
Be practical no so technical...
I think despite him using more expensive equipment, the methodology is the same regardless of your tools.
I actually prefer him sharing the high end options because some of us aspire to be at this level. It’s fairly easy to do research about what products are in a lower budget price range and take what he’s shown and modify. I have not seen anyone on his level teaching on RUclips.
@@CalethiaDeConto I agree with this, and will add that much of the modifiers can be created as a DIY project. A sheet or shower curtain can be almost as effective, and a frame to hang it on could be as simple as a broom stick. For example, there are great tutorials online how to make a close approximation of the Scrim Jim from parts you can buy for less than half the price of the Westcott product.
A reasonable perspective, but I think Matt is going to be at his best showing what works for him. There are dozens of other people online showing their style of lighting and production, including minimalist DIY. Matt shouldn't try to be all things to all people.
there are already countless low-budget tutorials out there that are focused on the general audience & lowbudget shoots.
His audience is international, but very niche: intermediate to professional level documentary cinematography. This is what makes him stand out from the 100s of RUclipsrs who teach lighting setups
