- Hundreds of parents gathered outside the Montgomery County School Board meeting Tuesday to protest a policy that doesn’t allow students to opt out of lessons on gender and LGBTQ+ issues, which many families argue goes against their religious freedom. News4’s Aimee Cho reports.

Majority of the parenrts I see are Ethiopian. As an Ethiopian American student who's graduated high school and continuing to pursue education in college, I stand with you all.

Oops. Dropped my phone :). I’m not being snarky. I honestly want to know. My parents (and they’re long passed) made sure we learned about things outside our immediate sphere - like that different people love different people. It wasn’t much taught to a great extent in school, but what I did learn in sex Ed (no such thing back then about lgbtq info) I was able to come home and ask more questions. If kids don’t know to ask about things, how do they learn. Open the doors. Not everyone will walk through. If your best friend turned out to be lgbtq, in your early 20s, wouldn’t you want to know more about what they’ve been through?
@@wendymurphey8967 I know a freshman in my college who's thought about changing genders and has already started to develop into becoming a trans. I asked him-her a few questions. They were basic such as what got him to be trans. "Her" parents didn't accept that but I just stood and listen. I'm not against LGBTQ people. As they are like regular human beings to us. As long they respect my beliefs, I'll respect theirs. That doesn't mean I won't ask questions of such. Because I'm curious sometimes.

As a teacher who recently visited my old elementary school library...I can confirm the books are absolutely sexual and ideological in nature. As young as they can read, children have access to books that say things like "Sometimes, parents assign the wrong gender at birth," with a wheel of gender at the back where your child can connect what they like ie. ice cream, to their gender, to their gender expression. The book stated they can be a boy, a girl, both or neither. Like trying on a different shirt. This was on display, not in the counsellors office, where the book could actually help the rare child with gender dysphoria with the guidance of a trained professional. I encourage all parents to do exactly what these parents are doing. Treat school board meetings like the newest drop of your favourite netflix show...be there... and start making the education system be accountable. Thank you.

I went to the high school as well and found a series that is for “New Adult” on display, (not young adult, meaning teens, but for new adults, meaning 20+). The series I had been reading it for fun with my 26 year old friends as a spicy book club. To see it on the shelves at work was completely disgusting. For context, the book “a court of silver flames” had anywhere from kink, to fantasizing about incest, to threesomes…everything. Not appropriate for my 13 year old students. 🤢🤮

Yes but I found about sex early and we had sex ed because in the 90s there was a teen pregnancy epidemic. In the 4th grade we had the talk (opt out was available). That kept me from having a child I knew I wouldn't want nor STDs as I moved on to middle school, high school and college in the early 2000s. Kids are so exposed to sex now via internet and social media if parents are not addressing it at home the school has to deal with it from teen pregnancy to weapons.

All schools should be doing is educating children about subjects that will help them lead a successful, lucrative and productive life. Gay families and students should have no more energy focused on them than straight kids and straight families. You can teach kids to be accepting of people even if they are different without having to go into the stuff these lessons go into. You can teach it without having lessons about it at all. When you look at the people who "teach" kids about LGBTQ issues, they don't come across as the most stable people.

I am a Traditional Catholic who goes to school in MCPS. As an update, there are now LGBTQ-Left-Agenda Flags on the windows of all classrooms, saying “Safe-Space”. Also, there is now a LGBT-Agenda After school Club, where they read Gay Romance stories and discuss this weird agenda. Work on a statement that says that since state law already gives parents the right to opt children out of sex ed lessons, any school board member, principal, teacher, or other person who attempts to teach sex ed stuff to a student whose parents have given written notice that they are opting their child out of these lessons will be instantly terminated upon request made by any affected parent or guardian.
No need to re-create the wheel; just use the ballot initiative to create some teeth to enforce a law that already exists.
