I’m a retired teacher and a classroom should NOT be a place where privacy is promoted. Classrooms should have cameras rolling at all times. If you’re doing your job you shouldn’t be afraid to have camera rolling. Children need to be protected and parents should have the right to know what is going on Plus it is also very helpful for teacher’s protection too. False allegations have hurt many a teacher’s reputation. So cameras in classrooms should be a must!
Perfectly said. Teachers and children should be protected. One bad teacher gives the rest a bad name as well. And a teacher being drove to protect themselves from say high school kid antagonizing them should be considered as well.
@ dona' little fawn Camera footage isn’t the only reason why phones are normally banned during school hours. It’s also b/c it can be used for other inappropriate stuff. Like adult videos, cyber bullying, distraction from their academics, and cheating on tests. If she’s told not to record, she needs to follow school policy! Period!!

I had this one terrible teacher in 4th grade. I tried telling my parents about her but they thought I was overreacting. Then one day I broke and cried for 2 hours straight, keep in mind I was 9 or 10 at the time. Only after that did they actually believe me. Turns out what she was doing violated school policy so she got demoted to teacher's assistant the next year.
Depends on the situation. So all we know, the kid was probably being defiant and the teacher must’ve rightfully scolded her and gave her a fair consequence. We don’t know the full story.

Also anyone with a weakened immune system. Shame on the school for being reckless and Shame on the school for thinking it was okay for suspending her!!! As someone who was mercilessly bullied throughout my grade school career, I can atest to what a teacher bullying you feels like. I've had a good few and it's makes you feel a different kind of hopelessness verses being bullied by your peers. Like there's no where to turn at that point... since these are the people who should be protecting you.
I know exactly how you feel. Most of the teachers and staff would join in on bullying certain "lightning rod" students, I was one of them targeted. What made it worse is that some of the staff and teachers were related to the bullies and would work together to torment students, while those kids continued to act horribly and get away with it. I got so many detentions in third grade because the guidance counselor was related to my worst bully and he'd go running to her(he constantly threatened me with a Swiss army knife but she said it didn't count as a threat because it happened on the bus).It was a hard lesson early in life that this world is full of injustice. Being ganged up on in a such a toxic environment as a kid by an entire grade and adults gave me so much stress that it caused long lasting psychological damage. It took me 15 years to be somewhat functional again without getting anxiety and panic attacks in public. I hope you, and everyone who suffered from such meaningless cruelty are able to heal.
Words like that hurt children’s self esteem. Imagine the person who’s in charge of you threatening your physical safety everyday . If it were a babysitter they’d be in jail.
When I was borne ,the only one you could go to jail for threatening was the President of The United States of America. What a lowly state this country has apparently fallen to . B O

I guess the lesson here is, the teacher who bullied was employed by the school: ergo, take the recording to the police. Even if the school is against a teacher acting this way, it's an embarrassment that they hired someone like this...this young lady absolutely did the right thing. And the recording is NOT against the law: the expectation is clearly stated in the name PUBLIC SCHOOL!!!
The student who was “bullied” by the teacher was clearly a trouble maker who was defiant and probably bullied other kids. No teacher in their right mind would yell at or intimidate a well-behaved and respectful student. If a student was called out by the teacher, they were clearly asking for it.

Sad, but true. The only real mistake the girl made was trusting another teacher to "do the right thing". Never trust cops, teachers or school leadership to "do the right thing" because they will always default to covering themselves from any legal exposure. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS take your recordings to the local media and anonymously expose these people for their bad behavior. That's the only way for any real change to happen. Public pressure from media exposure and reporters asking questions will cause the school to "act" and fire the teacher just to show they are "doing something". Otherwise, they will do nothing at all and will punish the student who is providing the information by hiding by a misrepresentation of a terribly vague law that was only meant to protect the privacy of people in bathrooms and dressing rooms. It was not meant to be used to "protect" people behaving badly in a public setting, like those instructing a room full of students. The mother instinctively knew the school's treatment of her daughter was wrong and did the right thing by going to the media. Try to imagine for a moment how history would have been changed if the young girl who recorded the criminal actions of Derek Chauvin killing George Floyd had instead handed over her recording to a local police station instead of directly to the media.

Most states require consent from the other party to be recorded OR there needs to be a disclaimer of some sort most often in the form of a sign saying you could potentially be recorded. This happened to me in Martin County FL, in 5th grade back in 2005, i brought a voice recorder to school to show my mom that our teacher was yelling and cussing at us all. This teacher was very sharp and harsh to us. My mom brought it to the principal to show them her cussing rant & they told me i could get sued for violation of privacy and merely switched me to a different teacher's class for the remainder of the year. Way to make a kid feel like those in power are standing up for the bully. This is a real problem.
my grandmother had decided that she was gonna sit in class, getting permission from the principal, to see any difference. She acted more professional with her in the room, but she did it for a couple days to see what the kids say. Everyone in my grade was so thankful and even some teachers next door thanked her, as the school politics prevented any change. She didn't teach again next year at our school and she was horrible.
I had an abusive teacher in 6th grade. If a student did ever as much as take a breath she would give a major referral. One time I remember this kid was correcting her because she gave the wrong answer, and she grabbed him from the neck and threw him out the classroom. I hope she got fired, but when I ended middle school she was still there so I don’t know what happened to her.
In 8th grade, I had a math teacher who was a true bully. She was very mean (not just strict...strict teachers can be nice, like Professor McGonagall) to students she looked down on. I was a hard-working student who always did my best, but math wasn't my strong point. This teacher treated me with disdain, as if I weren't a person worthy of respect. Middle school is a critical age too, where students focus on self- and peer-acceptance. It's a delicate period of change. She was also mean to other students for different reasons, but she seemed to hate me because I wasn't like the smarter students (this was probably my low socioeconomic status showing, which I wasn't aware of at the time). She didn't even have any of my siblings, so her meanness didn't stem from prejudice against my family either. I hated her because she made me feel horrible about myself. This is in contrast to my amazing high school math teachers, who were non-judgmental and nothing but supportive of students who were struggling in math. For that reason, I was more motivated to do better in math and even started to like it.

I think any evidence against would/should be taken seriously. She isn't a cop, she can't violate someone's rights.
I had a 4th grade teacher I just hated going to her classroom. Math was my least favorite subject & I didn't understand a lot of it. This teacher didn't hide who her favorites were. They were the smart kids that never asked questions and always raised their hands. She made it obvious she had NO patience for me. It was my most miserable year of school, by far. The following year I had the sweetest, kindest, most patient teacher I had ever had. Best school year ever & I actually enjoyed learning math. Won second place in the class spelling bee that year with my best friend, who won first place. Those 2 years of grade school were like night and day, different. Many people have no idea how much a teacher can influence how you learn or don't learn. How miserable they can make learning for you. Many teachers may have good intentions but, truly should not be allowed to teach children anything because they should not be teachers!

Plus it is also very helpful for teacher’s protection too.

Otherwise any evidence obtained is obtained illegally and therefore not used. They would have been better off getting all the kids accounts on the incident and take it from there.
I was bullied by my 2nd grade teachers so I understand how that feels. This student did very well.
I was bullied by a second grade teacher as well back when they could paddle you.
my grandmother had decided that she was gonna sit in class, getting permission from the principal, to see any difference. She acted more professional with her in the room, but she did it for a couple days to see what the kids say. Everyone in my grade was so thankful and even some teachers next door thanked her, as the school politics prevented any change. She didn't teach again next year at our school and she was horrible.
I was bullied too. I’m now in 8th grade and I don’t take squat from teachers anymore

What kind of classroom environment was your 4th grade class? We’re most of the kids difficult and descriptive? Subdude same
Subdude I would rather be suspended for a righteous and good deed than bad and unrighteousness deeds. That little girl didn't do anything wrong at all, she caught a bad teacher in her own bad behavior and unacceptable conduct. Students have a right to a safe environment. The teacher is being mean, verbally abusive, and is bullying- so what give that teacher any right to intimate or bully a student and making them bad? They have no right to disrespect students. The teacher is disrespectful towards students. It's the worst thing ever do. The teacher to remind herself of one rule that she should follow herself:. "Treat everyone the way you want to be treated." Otherwise wise treat one another with random acts of kindness, respect, and fairness. That teacher is being a bad example of her behavior and conduct when she expects kids to behave well and conduct themselves acceptably. Good teachers show positive examples of good behavior, conduct, fairness, respect, and fairness to their students. Good teachers except students for who they are no matter what their differences, weaknesses/strengths, talents, giftednesses, traits, or abilities are. That teacher should be reprimanded and lectured about how wrong bullying is.

Robert Teachers are PUBLIC employees and must follow laws and rules designed for the protection and rights of the PUBLIC. Students, in a PUBLIC school, are the PUBLIC, not paid employees, and are there as required by law. If the PUBLIC school is not protecting the PUBLIC then the PUBLIC must protect themselves.
There should be cameras in the classroom to monitor not only children behavior but teachers as well. No expectations of privacy in public
That’s nuts. There’s NEVER an “expectation of privacy” when you’re with other people’s children. Places that are protected from video include the bathrooms and locker rooms - but even there, if threats are being made, an audio recording can be made.

As soon as somebody here shows me that, I'll concede the point.
Schools don't care about the safety and well-being of their students. They don't even care about educating them. No, all they care about is attendance because more students in school puts money in their pockets.
When my great aunt died when I was in high school, my mother had to fight to let my school agree to let me go to her funeral which was during a school day! They asked her questions like, "How well did I know her?" and what-have-you. What the hell does it matter?! Blood is blood, but do schools care about that?
