Its been 3 years when you made this video. Its been 6 years since the idea came to my mind that a software for tutorials should do this. And after 6 years i came across this perfect guide for starters. I guess it was worth the wait. Thank you.
I work in the IT department for a newspaper corporation. One of my mandates is to train users in standard operating procedures. Since we're scattered across the US, video tutorials will be invaluable. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your clear explanations! They are definitely going to help me up my game.
Steve, great video. It's amazing what one little piece of software can do. 10 years ago, I made tons of demo videos and we used a full studio, a scan converter for screen caps, and FCP7 for editing. Looking forward to part 3, and part 1.
This....is....literally....amazing.... You have no idea how much you have helped me. I have been searching everywhere to get clear and concise help on how to do video editing for my classroom. Thank you!!
Now, you are a very experienced narrator and in this tutorial you record everything at the same time. Many other tutorials recommend the following workflow: 1) Write script 2) Record narration 3) Record the screen while listening to narration 4) Edit it and put it together. What is your opinion on separating the capture of audio and video in this way?
I rarely use a written script although I often will write down point form the topics I want to cover. The structure that you’re outlining for creating videos is a lot of work, but is a tried and true. I have such a long background greeting video that I find it for more efficient to create my content ad lib. I suspect a lot of people will find it far better to start using a structure like you’ve outlined and as they gain confidence modify that format.
dottotech Thanks a lot for your prompt reply, and for your inspiring videos. I just also found the webcast you published some time ago on the same topic. Great stuff! Do you know the Scripted Recording feature in Screencast-o-matic. Just discovered it and think it could make the process I outlined more effective.
I only found your channel last week and you continue to blow my mind! I know you said you can record the android phone, but is there a version of this (or similar product) for us lowly windows users?
GOTTA LOVE THAT STEVE-STYLE AUDIO... Steve, sharing a peek inside your process is very helpful. Well done as always. The consistently high quality of the audio catches my attention. How do you do that? Your broadcast talent and experience plays a big part I'm sure... and I can see by your mic and mixer/preamp you are going for pro quality for the audio going in. What I'd like to know is more about the audio side of your process. Are you recording directly to ScreenFlow and producing fast with only minor edits? Or is there more involved in your audio editing (things like compression, equalization, and noise removal... in addition to basics of audio cuts and volume leveling)? Any further audio insights would be appreciated.
I record directly into screenflow and don't do any audio sweetening. But I have a really good audio setup, as you noticed. Here is my rig dottotech.com/toolkit/
Thank you for creating this video series! I was wondering if you have tried the new screen recording option in iOS 11? You have to enable it in Settings > Control Centre > Customise Controls > Screen Recording. I want to start making RUclips tutorial videos and this really helped, keep up the great work! J
Thanks so much for your video. I have a question. Could you do this all live? I would like to be able to have a video conference in which I can share my device screen behind me. Or is it only for video recordings
I love this, but have a question that should still be relevant. How do we record from two cameras at the same time like you did when switching the views? It seems like Camtasia only allows one camera to function at a time. I should say that I'm thinking of using an external webcam, but then recording from the phone at the same time as well from a different angle. Thanks!
What an informative video! Thank you for recommending a software that I can use for my small business on "How to" virtual manuals etc. Do you have a recommendation on what type of microphone and headsets are best in quality and clarity?
Great video! I have a PC, so I'm going to check out Camtasia. Your video of your face is so sharp...is that your Logitech Brio? I can't get 4K with my Brio and I've tried everything. It may be my computer can't handle it.
Steve, that was a great tutorial about Screenflow. Question: What if you want to record video but don't need to do the screen capture. What recording software would you recommend? Thank you.
Steve, it is a mystery to me how you get such a clean chroma key effect with your green screen so close to you. When my screen is that close, I get all kinds of green spill on my hair. Now my screen is 3 feet in back of my chair and I have extra lights for the screen so I don't over expose my face (which has the positive effect of not showing wrinkles!). I know you work in front of a window and you have two lights on the wall in front of you, but why is your face not over exposed?
This was über cool! Now.... coming up with something to screencast! Hmmmm..... Have tried some green screen in the past. Not very successfully, I might add.
Such a fascinating process. Have you seen the tools called “IMovie” and “Kinemaster”? How do these tools compare and differ? I tried playing with IMovie and the sound was lost. I know I was doing something wrong, and it sure was not intuitive. Any Idea where the sound went? Anyway, this process of Screenflow sure looked a lot easier
Excellent Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Peyilyan Especial Principle (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great one of a kind product for learning how to create unlimited videos minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my friend Sam got great success with it.
Thank you for this very informative video - one question, I do not use a Mac and wondered if this floating head with green screen is possible by using Camtasia? regards
at 04:38 you mention a cable (bi ligthning cable !?) ... I am not an apple user (sadly) I have an Android + Windows 10 ...how do i connect to get the same results . I looked up the net and got mirroring solution using USB... is it the same ? But the mirroring appears to be spread on the screen ...not a literal phone cast
Q: I watched this a few times, but unclear why you are using your cell phone. Is the phone being used every time you do a video, or are you just using the cell phone to show an example that you can connect a phone and show the iPhone screen? Is there a particular program or app I need to download for the cell phone and is there a place I should store the recording other than the recording feature provided by iPhone? Thx u kindly
This is incredibly helpful. I have a similar setup with respect to audio and use Screenflow along with a microphone patched through a mixer. However, I always have an audio sync issue. This requires me to clap to create an audio spike. I then separate the audio from my video track and slide the track to get them in sync. Do you know have this issue? Or do you a better remedy? Thanks.
Hi Ibarionex, are you recording into your computer or to a separate device, like a Zoom? I run my audio through a mixer and a dbx 286s, but the final recording destination is a Zoom H4n. Although I have to do something to both create an audio spike and a visual reference on the screen to pair them up, I haven't found any audio drift using that method.
I think he has switched to Camtasia & Snagit, although I am unclear on why the switch, perhaps they are comparable and Camtasia/Snagit is part of a better affiliate program?
I am not sure you can go wrong with either, although I hear Snagit is makes making thumbnails for your videos easy (not sure if Screenflow has a similar feature)...
Steve.... I have Camtasia and that software does not natively let you use your phone as a separate asset. Do you know of a way to do this with Camtasia?

You're a genius at explaining tech. I have watched scores of similar vids. None compare to yours in term of clarity and simplicity. Thanks
one of the Awesome tutorial...!!!

Great as always mister! excellent job
Fantastic video Steve, love the step by step instructions. THANK YOU

Thanks for sharing this. I'm a teacher and I'm surely learning how to utilize these tools to improve my teaching
Glad to hear that!
Love it, very helpful and always wondered how this was done. Timeless knowledge. Stay safe!
Oh My Giddy Aunt, you are the best thing since fried chicken. Thank you so much for this information. So super super helpful.

I only found your channel last week and you continue to blow my mind! I know you said you can record the android phone, but is there a version of this (or similar product) for us lowly windows users?
Camtasia
awesome! I have been a Dottotech fan since before facebook and youtube!! From Toronto to Vancouver now. Thank you!
Great to see you here!
Brilliant as usual Steve! Many thanks for giving us a backstage view of the process.

Fantastic video Steve. Thank you, thank you. I learned so much. I'm even liking your time-stamping in your description. Very thorough.
Thank u so muchhhhhh....sir..........really a great tutorial..........waiting for part 3
Thank you. This is important ,even though it is 21/2 years ikd,
This Awesome! LOVE IT! Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this. Thank you 100x
Such great info! How do find good quality background images or graphics like you have used in this video?
Your videos are so clear and concise, fantastic!!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Thank you!
Thanks Steve! You make it look so easy!!
Thank you for creating this video series! I was wondering if you have tried the new screen recording option in iOS 11? You have to enable it in Settings > Control Centre > Customise Controls > Screen Recording. I want to start making RUclips tutorial videos and this really helped, keep up the great work! J
Yep I’ve used it a few times works well!
I have used this too, but the sound does not sync with the video all of the time. How do you correct that?
Really enjoying this series 👍
Any chance you could elaborate on placement of the green screen & it's lighting.
I will do some more on lighting in the hardware demos
Steve: Awesome job and thanks for being so generous. Rick
Thank you - Steve
Very helpful, as usual. Good work!
Do you export directly to .mp4, or do you immediately publish to RUclips?
Really looking forward to part 3!
Outstanding Thank you
Excellent and informative. I am real keen to see how you insert those intros and outro's, submit buttons etc.
Thanks so much for your video. I have a question. Could you do this all live? I would like to be able to have a video conference in which I can share my device screen behind me. Or is it only for video recordings
Yes you can, you would need to use a switching app like Ecamm Live but it is possible.
Love your creative titling, Any apps, tricks, you prefer... recco
I love this, but have a question that should still be relevant. How do we record from two cameras at the same time like you did when switching the views? Great theme Steve! Thanks
Great job Steve!
I really enjoy your videos.
thanks a lot .
Loved the info
you are making very good video. I'm your student
Bravo! So helpful.
Perfect
love your good work, thumb up
Great Video!! I wish to go live on youtube and which additional gears would be needed? Thanks
Pretty much the same setup
What an informative video! Thank you for recommending a software that I can use for my small business on "How to" virtual manuals etc. Do you have a recommendation on what type of microphone and headsets are best in quality and clarity?
great video Steve!
MORE MORE MORE !!!!! lOVE IT!
Great video! I have a PC, so I'm going to check out Camtasia. Your video of your face is so sharp...is that your Logitech Brio? I can't get 4K with my Brio and I've tried everything. It may be my computer can't handle it.
Great video! How do you upload your Screenflow files to Dropbox? I've had some file corruption issues.
Steve, that was a great tutorial about Screenflow. Question: What if you want to record video but don't need to do the screen capture. What recording software would you recommend? Thank you.
If you just want to record video from your WebCam, and you’re an apple, QuickTime will do a very good job
Thank you!
I have the same issue
It’s all about the lighting and getting it uniform. I’m sure Steve will concurs
It is touch and go with how close I put the screen, I think you are far better off with it further back and lit separately
Steve, Excellent Video! Question: You recommended Screenflow for iOS, but what is your recommendation for Chrome OS? Thank you in advance!
I actually don't have a recommendation, perhaps screencast-o-matic?
This was über cool! Now.... coming up with something to screencast! Hmmmm..... Have tried some green screen in the past. Not very successfully, I might add.

Imovie is a staple in the Mac wold, I suspect you had the wrong audio input selected. They are both more for classic video and not screen recording.
Thank you for your videos. I have a question, how can I record myself but if I have a script to read and then show the pdf on my screen?
Thank you for this very informative video - one question, I do not use a Mac and wondered if this floating head with green screen is possible by using Camtasia? regards
Absolutely,
Thank you!
Steve, I imagine Bluetooth use has too much latency to be used anywhere in the mix?
You cannot reuse the Camtasia from Mac to a Windows machine and vice versa.
at 04:38 you mention a cable (bi ligthning cable !?) ... I am not an apple user (sadly) I have an Android + Windows 10 ...how do i connect to get the same results .

Are you using a DSLR or a webcam? The sync issue is something I have never experienced.
dottotech I'm using the Logitech webcam but using the audio patched thru the mixer v
I suspect it has to do with your mixer then. Not sure of a solution.
Thanks for your time. Much appreciated.

Do you still use Screenflow or have you moved over to using Camtasia or ShotCut now that we are in 2019?
I think he has switched to Camtasia & Snagit, although I am unclear on why the switch, perhaps they are comparable and Camtasia/Snagit is part of a better affiliate program?

Are you in Andriod or iOS, iOS has loads of options, Also Mac or PC?
