I am a 83 year old that clicked on your site. It was one of the best moves I ever made. Not being a youngster the digital world is very confusing. By listening to you I can pick out different points that when put all together that world is starting to make sense, I weed out what does not apply to me but expandsmy tech knowledge. Just wanted to let you know who’s out there watching you.

We have never met but you are a favorite friend. Back in the 70's, I bought my first computer, a Commodore Pet. I was completely computer illiterate, there were NO library books, no manuals, no magazines, and minimal poor literature. The first amazing guru I met was Jim Butterfield. Then you came along and I never missed a show. If it had not been for you and Butterfield, my computer would have become an expensive doorstop.
Somewhere we parted company. However, because of the Corona virus, I discovered Google Photos and boy, what a program! I'm just learning and once again, I found a favorite guru whose brain/videos I intend to study. My life just became easier!

Thanks for the info. There are a few features in google photos that I'm missing:
    - An option that will create albums based on the directory the pictures are in
    - An API that will allow me to communicate with google drive and google photos via google script.
    - The image search, when utilizing the file name does not work as reliable (not all pictures with a specific pattern in the name where found)
    - An option to manually add tags to photos, the automatic tagging works fine but its not enough for me

I backup on google and Dropbox which subsequently automatically loads to my computer and to my time machine. I use Dropbox as my main photo management because I like to create my own folder structure to follow my personal logic as to how I reference events and people.

One thing, you forgot to mention is the Google Lens icon on the mobile app you demonstrated. I especially like using it for recording documents such as business cards and restaurant receipts. It will even interpret phone numbers and web addresses then provide hot links to them.

I am using 2 Google accounts to back up my photos.
One of them is used to backup all my photos from my iPhone, for that I use Original quality, I don't have to pay for storage as this is just temporary.
I then every 2 months or so move all those photos to my computer, so there I have them all in their original format and size.
I then backup all my photos from my computer to a secondary Google photos account, and this time in "High quality" I also have all my older photos on my computer and backed upp on that account as well, tens of thousands of photos in all.
This way I will at least have all my photos in "High quality" if something goes wrong.
And I must admit that I really do struggle to see any difference between the original photo and "High quality"
Oh and I have both of the accounts setup on my phone so I can easily find even my oldest digital photos on my phone any time.

I believe there is one thing that was left out as one of Google photo's compromises for the free service (apart from what Google does with the photos and videos). When you upload photos and videos there, though they have the same resolution for those under 16 MP and 1080p, they are more compressed versions of them. Thus some details will be lost though barely noticeable if at all. You will notice this when you try to download those images and videos you uploaded. They are significantly lower in file size. Correct me if I am wrong.
Nevetheless, I am an avid user of it. The pros heavily outweighs the cons. And I love the fact that I have access to all my photos wherever I have access to Google.

    • @peanut924
      @peanut924 5 лет назад

Brings up a question... I thought the camera determined the pixel size. However, Google offers the higher resolution... I don't understand how they can do that? I suppose if I took a really good photo that I want to print an enlargement from, I would opt for the higher resolution??

Steve, I really enjoy your 'broadcasts'. I stumbled across them a few weeks ago. I own a small electrical business in NW Montana. I have been using and still do use Picasa. I take 20-40 pictures a day of work and projects, family, and the foster kids in our life. My process is: Photos automatically upload to Dropbox, I sort the pictures on my Win 7 PC dropbox folders to the job, or child, or event. Picasa takes over from there and allows me to find job surveys, all the 400 amp services we have installed, special equipment we need to document, etc. I have an external 5TB hard drive that is always plugged in the PC and the pictures eventually go there (after naming the equipment, or customer, or event, and converting MP4 to WMV for Picasa to see it). The same pictures also go to a separate external 2TB hard drive for emergency back up of my pictures. Finally, I notice my Google Photo account uploads many but not consistently all of my camera pictures to the online account (Google gmail, drive, calendar etc). I have a good safe system, but with many flaws: Picasa is getting weaker and weaker with no support, my business is soon moving our files from Dropbox to G Drive, possibly eliminating the valuable tool I have to see, edit, and identify pictures opn my hard drive through DropBox. I dont care if my pic are uploaded to G Photos, even tho 80% are uploaded- it's nice to have that back up even if it's 80% reliable, I really need my pics on my PC, and a job folder, and a ability to create albums, tags, headings, etc. When I open my Dropbox pic folder every day (actually several times a day) I see all my job, event, or kid folders, and the most recent pictures that need to be placed in a new or existing folder. When I open G Photos I see millions of photos and no way to sort them in folders because folders don't exist, and even if it did, that would never copy to my hard drive where I actually need them for work. This is a huge topic for me and my business and I haven't seen any decent picture apps that help me. geof@gsselectric.com

I understand I can pick a group of photos and make an album. In my case, I have probably hundreds of albums.
The problem begins when I want to add more photos to an existing album. I can only find it by scrolling through the albums.
I had assumed that there would be a "right click" "Add to album" option where an alphabetized list or dated list of my albums would appear and I would be able to add that photo to that album.

Google photo is an amazing time saver and the search functionality is uncanny in its accuracy. You hit many points in a very concise video - well done. You did touch on this as well, but i believe it deserves a bit more attention for those making this choice. The data that Google automatically associates with your photos and videos is largely based on Google's image recognition and put simply, this data lives separately from the image itself. This is both the beauty of Google photo's that makes it amazingly simple and fast, but also potentially the downside. If Google's service goes away, as unlikely as that may seem right now (Hello Google+, MySpace and Yahoo) then you are left with a collection of images that no longer have any data relationships (organization). Okay so you start from scratch - that might be a risk many will take in exchange for the free service now. The other option is embedding data into each and every image, which can be done with tools like lightroom from Adobe - Note that lightroom uses XMP format for metadata that is technically a separate file that is connected to each image - They didn't want to risk corrupting an image file with extensive metadata. Adding this data can be a long and tedious process for sure, but it has the huge upside in that once it's complete - its there with the image forever and can be leveraged by any future photo storage/organization solution. So perhaps a combination of both may be a good idea for those who are very detail oriented. Also, be aware that your camera often has meta data settings (Exif data) that you can include with each photo when it's being taken, this includes all the camera's tech specs, as well as Geo location, time, date, copyright and more. My Sony A6000 provides this data and if set properly can be a huge time saver regardless of the photo apps you use. Thanks again for your great information.

If you have Google Photos set to automatically backup and free up space on your device, the photo isn't there anyway. You are only seeing a representation of it. So, yes, if you deleted it in Photos, you removed it from the cloud and all other devices. Keep in mind that the purpose is to keep your device's memory freed up. You can still download them to your device if you find it necessary for the pic to actually be in your device's memory.

In Google Photos, go to Settings (three lines top left, then Settings link). In settings, look for "Group similar faces Manage preferences for face grouping" and make sure everything is switched on in that section. It took an hour or so for the system to reset itself, but now mine looks just like the one in the video. Good luck.

Yep that's why I prefer Apple's photos better. Googles is a bit confusing as you said. Too much duplication of things. Things like sharing videos is much easier on Apple. When I add a video to a shared stream on Apple it's instant. On Google photos it has to upload it first then I think you share a link or something like that.

Here is biggest problem with Google photos, all of my photos are organized by folders and sub-folders on my external hard drive. For example: Photos> 2018> Hawaii Family Vacation. If I were to upload my 25,000 I have taken past 10 years they would all just be in a single Google photos folder and not organized. Is there a way around this problem?

flightskate2 Download all pic on your PC /Mac and then use an app Backup and Synchronisation ( translated from my language so U may find it under a bit different name), which u can download legally of course. It will make back up of all photos in Google Picture and at the same time on your Drive BUT ON YOUR DRIVE IT WILL STORED IN THE SAME FOLDERS AS ON YOUR COMPUTER. I forgot the best. There is no limit on your Drive as in Google Pic. I have 70 G B stored for free in myDisc done the way I described above. Dont forget to click on the 3 lines on the right in your Drive menu and choose Computer from the list (should be belove of Picture )

    • @alekrudy5993

I think you are right... (no way to add folders directly; with all the photos in them... looks like a user has to sort photos after downloading... or maybe you can download all photos from folder in your comp into a chosen by you folder in Google Drive ) but I am not sure. A few months ago I remembered this... I am going to do some cleaning in my Google Drive tonight, so I will figure this and answer.

    • @alekrudy5993

      Philip Gardner,
thank you for the right question. It helped me to start thinking in the right direction. Tonight I finaly realized how Google Drive and Google Photo are connected and how they both work (with some help from articles on Google support and after a few experiments, of cause.)
      1) No, there is no such things as independent “folders” inside in Google Photo. But you can assign any photo (or photos) to one or to a few your own “albums” inside of Google Photo, without actually moving photo or photos from its place.
      2) There are folders in Google Drive though.
      3) In settings in Google Drive (in iOS and in Android) you can choose the option that all photos from Google Photo will synchronize with a folder inside of Google Drive. (There is a similar setting in Google Photo too, but I am still figuring if they are the same.)
      4) Article in Google support says that deleting in one of, Google Photo or in Google Drive, will delete in the other... but I am still in process of figuring what happens if in Google Drive I move photo from its [google photo folder] to a diferent folder that was created by me...
      5) So far, I figured that in Google Photo I can use the function “share” photos [into my Google Drive] in order to move them from the cloud of Google Photo app - to the cloud of Google Drive app. Then I deleted photos from my Google Photos but their copies stayed in the folder I created for them in Google Drive.
      6) There is special Google app for Computer (and for Mac), that you can install on your Computer (or on Mac) and set up automatic uploading to separate folders in your Google Drive cloud for as many different folders with photos in your Computer (or in your Mac) as you want. (Well, (6) - at least this is how I interpreted that part (about Computer/Mac) of the article in Google support. I still keep figuring, sorry.

Google photos reduces the size of photos and videos *even if the photo size is less than 16MP and video quality is 1080p full HD.*
*Resolution remains the same but the physical size is reducing e.g. 5 mb to 2mb. I have uploaded video of size 1.5 Gb (1080p FullHD) but after some time I saw that the size of the video is reduced to the 280 Mb* and its quality was very poor. But the resolution was same.
And in my case face recognition is not working for archieved photos, if I again unarchiev photos, the face recognition works but as soon as I archive all photos People folder becomes empty.

“To clean your library” means that you clean up your library from screenshots, paper documents photos so on. At least that is what I put to my archive. Also I put to my archive tons of downloaded from Internet funny pictures of Obama and Putin, because I do not want Google to add their faces to the list of my real friends... At one day I will maybe use that pictures to bag and to annoy Russian Foreign Office representative Maria Zaharova right in her Facebook, but for now I want the pictures to be stored away and I do not want them to be included in my collections of friend... that is for your Google Archive is: for removing some of your stored pictures of cartoon heroes from the face recognition area of your Google Photo, lol... Goggle Archive does the right thing: that is you who did not figure what archive is for...

I just switched from apple to the new google pixel XL and all my photos that transfered over became mixed up and cronologically out of order. I have been at a loss on how to fix it and searches online didn't help with a solid solution.
