    Hi Steve, thanks as always. You alluded to it at one point, but importing photos that aren't already digitized is a huge issue for many of us "older" folks. Perhaps as another edition of Google photos how to's, you could cover that topic. Scanning photos, scanning negatives and the issues of converting from negative to positives, scanning old slides, taking photos of photos, colour cast, etc., etc., etc. Hope you consider this for further demos

      I did digitalise several old pictures I had. How? I do just take a picture of them. Preferably that should be done during the day, and not under direct sunlight. I use a canon eos m. I have heard that canon eos m50 has a great color reproduction. I guess that such camera will do the job.

    Thank you. I’m scanning all my photos from the 70’s forward and I’m passing them along. It’s a job for sure- but I’m happy to do it now at 53 and preserve these for my daughter and Grandsons. Many ppl have now opened up their mailboxes and are finding pics from 30 - 40 years ago. Nice surprises. My daughter will now be the keeper of photos but we have digital copies as well. ~~just in case. I will back them up as well. I’m done keeping boxes and boxes of photos. I’m free. Yay🙌🏻✨🎈🎊🪅🎉

    Great video! A major limitation of writing descriptions in G Photos is that the field information is not included when the picture is downloaded from Google Photos. This means if you spend a lot of time writing descriptions and only do that in Google Photos, your work does not travel with the photo. Because of this, I personally recommend to anyone who wants to use Google Photos, that you manage your pictures outside of Google Photos so you can add metadata, and then import the picture to Google Photos for broader access, great searching, and display.

    • @GarthHamiltonAdventures
      @GarthHamiltonAdventures 5 лет назад +2

      Absolutely. Adding metadata (tags, in my case) to my photo/video files are the only reason I am still chained to Photoshop Elements. If PSE's cataloging and metadata management become available on Google Photos (or any other photo management program), I would drop PSE in a heartbeat.

    Great video on Google Photo, however all of us with tons of photos in either Dropbox, iCloud or local stored in folders, as albums... would be great if you could make a video on how to import those into Google Photo, where the folders, albums, are retained so that when imported, that one would be able to see all the great albums which we all have spent years organizing our photos in... and would continue with within Google Photos as addition to the Metadata information, which are amazing in Google Photo :)

  • @Lake-Lover

    Suggestion: before backing up/uploading to GPhotos, organize them into folder/s on your PC by event, or subject, or item. Windows has excellent Batch Processing functionality. Once in File Explorer, locate your folder. Be sure to click "View" tab where you will then see "Panes" and also "Layout" sections at top. Both should be set to "Details." Then rename the folder to whatever: "1970 Jones Family Vacation" or "Jones 1970 Family Vacation." Then highlight all the related photos within it (do NOT include videos). Right click & rename one, using same name as folder. They will all be named the same with a sequential (#) following. Then, while all are highlighted, edit the detailed metadata shown in the far right column with whatever...Date Taken, Location, Comments, Title, Tags, etc. After batch processing your event photos, THEN upload to Google Photos and the basic, important metadata, including date, will stay with each photo, and sort by date.

      Completely. I keep my photos in folders organized by year. Whenever I use an app it organizes it by "date created" and I have to manually change the date for 1000s of photos that were scanned before I had a digital camera. I'm hoping at least one solid developer will make an app that can do this better. Currently, I use google drive folders to organize my photos. Its slower and clunky, but at least I know where my photos are.

      But I have a question: if we don't want to use the date, the location or the content as far as Google can tell is not useable, can I use some kind of tag? I see I can add a caption but that doesn't seem to work like tags do. Do you have any suggestions for sorting via some kind of tagging?

      I agree I have photos scanned in from the 1700s of my family and just want to keep everything in their folders where I put them because I wanted them there. I did try one organizing app and Thank God I didn't use it on my original SSD because the first thing it did was delete all duplicate photos from the whole computer drive. I have duplicates for a reason - one stored by date and one stored by subject. And then there are the duplicates from restoring my mom's old memory albums that are also stored by page from which ever album they came from.

    •  2 дня назад +1

      I agree, but once you get used to Albuns in Google Photos you see that they are very useful too. And the great thing is that you can have the SAME photo in many different albuns (and not by duplicating them, as you would if you were using folders).

    It is really helpful that you explain about the data that is in the photo. Sometimes it is easy to forget that a picture is a file and every app the picture is opened up has the ability to add the information to the data that is stored in the picture file.
    I have one question though. What is your take on using a cloud based service to back up and maintain your photos regarding the downloading file size? I know that with some services, they condense the file to conserve space on their servers. That could be a potential problem for photographers or graphic artists.

    I recommend using Stagsi if you download those photos in your PC. It's an incredible application that can do marvels along with tagging tools. One of the most useful feature is Tag Decks. It allows to assign hotkeys to one single tag or a group of tags. It becomes easy and faster to sort a long list of unsorted files and photos with quick keystrokes. Simply google for Stagsi to find more useful information. As a game developer, I highly recommend it.

    Steve, thanks for the explanation! I'm just getting started and uploaded some photos that I scanned from prints. I altered thd meta data and wanted to save those changes to my primary photo storage on my computer. The changes didn't make it and the taken date was the date of downloading to the computer. Maybe I'm making some mistake. I'll keep playing.

    Another great video as usual Steve. I’m currently just over half way through scanning old colour slides from the mid 1970’s to early 1980’s. To organise them as I go, I’ve used folders based on years/months on my Mac and used Finder’s bulk rename to give the files a more meaningful name. The next step would be to add dates to the file as you’ve mentioned, but that is another massive undertaking, I need some way to bulk edit, maybe by using the file names and/or folder structure as a source, have you any ideas?

Is there a way to batch change the date? Also, I recently uploaded about 800 photos to Google and it didn’t upload 116 of them, but there was no indication of why, or which photos didn’t make it. • @mwbrazier
      @mwbrazier 4 года назад +5

      I know one way to get around this issue, but in involves an extra step taking more time. When you select photos for an album, you can also choose to archive these same photos. Then they will still show up in your album that you created & they will also now show up in your archive section, but they will no longer show up in your main photos category. This will allow you to keep track of your progress if you are wanting to sort through all of your photos, putting them each in different albums. You archive every photo that you put in an album. Your remaining photos that are left to be sorted will keep getting smaller until there is none left. Once you finish sorting everything, you could choose to move them all back out of archive & your main photos section would return to normal, or you could choose to leave them in archive & your photos section would be empty, but it would be replaced by your archive section. I would probably choose to leave them in archive to make any future sorting easier. The downside to all of this is that it takes up twice the amount of time. You spend time moving some pictures to a new album. Then immediately after, you take an additional step moving those same pictures to archive. I'm not aware of any way to move pictures to both an album & archive in one step. So this plan sucks, but it should work. Google needs to create a better way to do this.

      @@brendaquinn8877 That is correct. You have to do it in sperate steps. You move pictures to an album in one step. HI Steve, quite a few challenges in importing old photos to Google photos and the cloud. Most important of all - time. Every photo uploaded needs to be edited and tagged in the description section of the Google Photos. That is the TIP; Use the description section that goes with each and every photo. Describe the photo like place, event, name and that makes it easier to pull it out with a search. 2 - Use as many variables especially with spelling and place.

    You used as example a photo in which you knew the date taken.
    But most old photos you don't know the dates and all the dates are different.
    I've been copying loads of old slides - that's another story - but when I uploaded them from my compie to Google - they land on Google in the date I copied them.
    So I had to scroll down to find each batch and somehow put them together.
    Thanks for the info on changing the date but you presumably have to do that AFTER you've uploaded them - so you still have to fish around among loads of photos uploaded on different days.
    I've also found problems sometimes uploading photos which if a large number, some photos are skipped and I have to go back and upload them a second time.

When you use Google Photos to change the photo's date taken, it only changes Google Photo's database, not the metadata of the photo file. Since you downloaded your sample photo to the computer first, it would have been best to change the date there before uploading to Google Photos. It's very easy in Windows, I assume it is also easy on Mac.

    Hi, what if you are importing 100's of old photos from a site like Shutterfly and they were taken by a digital camera and they are not dated. Do you have to go into each photo and change the date manually or is there a way to do a bunch at a time?

    Hi Steve, I love your videos and always learn something from them. However, I noticed that you have many "sort of duplicate" photos of the same scene in your photo albums. Do you ever just edit them by selecting just the best photo of the bunch and deleting the others? Most people seem to do just that and I think that's one of the big issues in creating these tens of thousands of photos that no one is ever going to go through after we're gone. What are your thoughts on that subject? People no longer print photos and put into a family album. These next generations will miss out seeing their relatives in photos because I believe no one is going to take the time and trouble of going through your photos even if they can gain access to your computer. Your thoughts?

    Have you noticed that Google Photos is one of the very few apps that nobody swaps or changes? In the productivity space, I find it is very common for many folks to jump between apps. A few months on Trello, then a semester on Todoist, then a trimester on Asana, then explore TikTik - even Notion is part of the "app hopping". But, nobody talks about how they "app hop" with photo apps, specifically Google Photos.
    I think this brings to the forefront how good Google Photos is with organizing and all the other little features it has - like automatically creating GIFs or collages among a few others. I personally really enjoy when it shows me photos and albums from yester-year.
    It is always a treat to open up Google Photos either for doing some personal exploration or because of a rediscovery notification. It seems like whatever new features they add, they can't get anything wrong - everything always makes Google Photos better.

      Eduardo Carrillo yeah, that's because it's so convenient with the cloud storage right out of the box when using an Android device. It becomes a hassle to switch because of setup and moving a lot of data plus you don't know if it will work or if you should trust other services. It's still massively under-featured though.

    Another wonderful review, I enjoyed it.
    Few comments if you don’t mind.
    All these platforms are one security breach away. We already saw that already happened.
    After certain number of photos these run out of space, few of us are not fortunate enough to afford monthly payments, how to circumvent this?
    If we start scanning old photos which do not have meta data how we fill this gap.
    What do you think.

    Hi Steve ... good vid for sure. This may have been answered in the comments. I followed your steps exactly and uploaded a FB photo to Google Photos, put in an album. But when I click on the photo, I do not get the 'metadata' menu. I get the standard 'save download image etc. Is this capability to manually name the ''old' photo available only on the paid Google Photo version and not the free version? Thanks!

    Hello Steve, My questions will sound so basic but that is what I am. I was looking at how to free GB in my Android of Google pictures, without going to the Cloud or Dropbox, I found your video on how to back up your photos, you suggested four different options, well for me now, I just need back up mines on my laptop, and later will be in an external drive and a Pendrive. Far I can open my Google photos on my Laptop, can I delete those ones on my Android? Also, I would like to know how to get what is exactly the amount of pictures I have, or what will be the free space I'm going to have then. I would appreciate your suggestions.

    Ever since google stopped synchronizing Google Photos with Google Drive I've ended up with a mess; some are in one place, some in the other. Often I will download a photo from Photos to edit and use in a document, but then the version in Google Photos is not the nicely cropped, adjusted one. How can I keep all this organized and in sync?

    How do I SORT all albums in a given number of options ie: folder name or location? I use a naming convention for folders that if sorted by Album name they would appear in Year order. Orhers would be in Alpha numeric order. I know how to sort the contents of a folder but i dont see an option to sort ALL Folders.

    • @Chris-rx5ce
      @Chris-rx5ce 5 лет назад +2

      Albums are organized by the dates of the photos within the album. So if one album has pics from 2015 but one photo has a date of 2019 then it will put that folder first because of that 2019 photo. You can change the photo date within the album. The photos are organized, by default, oldest to newest within the folder. Scroll down to the last pic and click on it. The edit date option is in the upper right corner menu. Just correct the year to 2015 and the folder will reorganize based on the year, 2015.

      @@Chris-rx5ce Do you know if adding photos to an album takes twice the amount of storage? For example: if a pic is 1 MB and I add it to an album, does the pic take 2MB because it’s in 2 locations or just 1 MB?

    • @Chris-rx5ce
      @Chris-rx5ce 2 года назад

      @@rituram9180 Hi Ritu - I do not know for sure but I would assume it does NOT double the storage amount. I think it stores the photo in the pictures page then just creates a link to it for the album. I upload the pictures to the photos page then add them to albums (organize them into albums) then archive the picture from the photos page (archive photo). This clears my Photos Page. I am assuming that the pictures are not stored twice in the archive page and the album page. I would think Google would have worked that out but like I said originally, I don't know. Maybe we could test it by adding a large video file and seeing if the storage doubles or not. Hmm...

    Great videos, Steve! Some questions:
    1. When I take a photo with my smart phone, the photo will be automatically saved in Google Photos, but not in Google Drive. Am I correct?
    If so, I have to upload the photo from Google Photos to Google Drive, right?
    2. If I delete a photo from my cell phone's Gallery, it will be deleted automatically from Google Photes as well, am I correct?
    Thank you!

      When you open tha app your new photos are uploaded ti Google Photos. You do not need to move the photos to Drive, Google Photos is a part of Drive already.
      No if you delete your photos from your phone they will remain inside of Google Photos unless you tell Google to also delete those.

Shutterfly has unlimited photo storage and it'll be easier for me to order prints and items from Shutterfly then Dropbox.

    hi I appreciate this is an old video, but I am new to google photos/google drive after having transferred from one drive. I was just wondering have you done a video around finding your photos on google drive. Basically I have 1000's of photos which I have successfully transferred over from one drive to google drive and they are all sorted into their relevant albums. My problem is that I go into google photos, select upload from google drive, select all the photos in the relevant album e.g grandchildren, but when they upload to google photos they are all over the place, and not in one block as I have uploaded them. The date taken is usually not the correct date either. Can i upload from google drive straight into a new album 'e.g. grandchildren. The more I transfer across the harder it is to find them. I am ready on 54GB worth!. All these are on my PC, not a mobile device. Your help would be appreciated. Kind Regards Susan

    It would be very nice if Google did boolean operations on my photos. Ex: Ryan-Dennis = All photos of Ryan that do not include Dennis. There are other operations as well (divide, multiply, add) and can be very helpful in photo organization. You have a much bigger audience than I, spread the word if you agree.
