  • In July 2020, we set off to backpack a section of the John Muir Trail (JMT) in the Sierra Nevada backcountry, known as the North Lake to South Lake Loop. The North & South lakes, are within Bishop Creek Canyon near Bishop, California. This hike took us from North Lake up and over Piute Pass, to the JMT. From there we headed South, to beautiful Evolution Valley, over Muir Pass, down LeConte Canyon to the Bishop Pass cutoff. Then we headed up through gorgeous Dusy Basin and over Bishop Pass, and down to South Lake.
Our hike took us through some of the most beautiful parts of the John Muir Trail (JMT). It is roughly 56 miles long, and we spent 4 nights and 5 days hiking the loop.

I did the reverse route a month after you did this one. I distinctly remember going down from Bishop pass thinking holy crap I'd never want to come up this way to get out...what a long climb. Great video of a great hike, thanks

Thanks Neda! That’s funny you said that cause we were thinking the same thing about going up Bishop Pass from the east side. Going down those switchbacks seemed seriously steep and didn’t think going up would be fun!😝 Guess we’ll see this summer… we got a permit to enter from South Lake😄 lol

@@chooseoutside8586 Awesome...I'm still gathering permits too. I loved that area. Got behind because of rain (and a too long nap) and had to walk through the Ducy basin area too quickly. I'm looking into a version staying up at those bench levels. Ever give any thought to the mostly off trail Ropers High Route? I'm trying to talk my way into the first section from roads end on the west side northeastish ending up at the bishop pass trail at the basin. It's somewhat brutal but keeps you in some of the best areas day after day. Best of luck on your adventures

@@nedanother9382 The 2 times we’ve passed through Dusy Basin, we didn’t enjoy it long enough. We’re planning on camping up on the benches our 1st night this time to soak it all in!😄 We’ve talked about the High Sierra Route, but haven’t nailed down when we’d like to do that. Maybe in the next couple years. Looks like a beautiful cross-country route! Enjoy your hike and good luck with the permits!

I did this same hike a couple of weeks before you guys. The mosquitoes lay in wait at Evolution Creek to feast on the backpackers who stop to take off their shoes!

Very good footage covering the whole hike, very helpful! I'm very interested in this trail but after viewing the trail I think there are some sections that would be too challenging for me, it would take me forever to get up some of those steep grades. I stuck around for your out-takes, quite funny!

Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it! I think if you take your time, all of the climbs are do-able- it just depends on how much time you have. There's plenty of water the whole way, which we certainly appreciated :) We just do this for fun, so we're so happy to hear you enjoyed our silliness while trying to make the video! haha Happy trails, and please let us know if you have any specific questions that might help you decide on a trip. Happy New Year!

I just watched your JMT video - it was awesome! And then I stumbled on this one. I did this same hike at the end of August (thankfully no mosquitos!). Odd that the Rock Monster had no teeth when we went by. We had nearly the same camp spots with the exception of your last night. We hiked down to the LeConte Canyon for our last night. Evolution Basin is spectacular - I'm hoping to do a quick trip next hiking season if I can snag a permit. Thanks for sharing your amazing adventures!

Thanks for your kind words Maryann! That’s so funny how you had almost the same camp spots when you hiked it! And what’s up with the rock monster losing its teeth?!! Sheesh!🙄. We hope you can score a permit for this summer. We picked one up already for Kearsarge Pass to Bishop Pass for early July. Maybe we’ll see you out on the trail! 😄

Hey guys it's Tanisha from Spectrum! I couldn't wait to get off of work so I decided to play it while I was here lol! I had to put it on close captions though. OMG that was an amazing trip!! You guys are some troopers for sure! The mountains and the lakes were so beautiful! I have so many questions lol...I won't ask them all but I am curious about the weather..so you guys were wanting to take a dip in a couple of the lakes but the mosquitoes were really bad, but then there was rain & hail and then I saw snow! Did temperatures greatly fluctuate? Definitely gonna check out your other videos.. loved the bloopers at the end too! 💙💙

Hi Tanisha! Too funny… we didn’t even know there was close captions for RUclips videos!😂 The mosquitos were crazy at the beginning of the trip, but that can be pretty typical. Jumping in that water is cold, but it feels SO dang good!😅 The Sierra Nevada mountains get some crazy weather up there during the summer! One minute it’s beautiful and sunny and the next it’s hailing or raining! (If you check out our Onion Valley to South Lake video, we hit a HUGE hail storm!😳) As for the temps, we’re at a pretty high elevation most of the time but at times have still seen high 80’s and at night it could get down into the 30’s. (During July/Aug). Hit the 20’s in September!🥶
We’re so glad you enjoyed the video and it was great talking to you earlier today!😊

Hi guys! Your video looks amazing - do you have any tips for the permit process?

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Daneka!😊.
For getting the permits, you can reserve them 6 months ahead on recreation.gov. So after you figure out what day you want to start, hop on your computer EARLY and nab them! Also, before you do, have your itinerary planed out because you’ll have to enter that - in a set amount of time they give you or you’ll have to start over. Of course, if you’re talking about a permit for the JMT, that’s another process and can reserve 168 days before your entry date (rolling lottery). We did that in 2019 and we FINALLY got picked on our 41st try!!! 😅. We hope you get the permits(s) you want!!😃

Great video guys. Question, looks like you parked at North Lake and hitched back to your car. Was that your plan or did you have a shuttle arranged? Wife and I are doing the same hike this summer and just trying to figure out the car situation.

Yes we parked at North lake and planned to hitch back to the van there. Normally, there’s so many people at South lake that the odds are good that it would be a fairly easy request. But by pushing our last day so late, we were very lucky that the last group there was nice enough to carry us back to the N. Lake turnoff over near Lake Sabrina.

Well, the mosquitos were crazy bad on the downside of Piute Pass near Hutchinson Meadow. After that, they were still around but tolerable. We had great temps at night and not too hot during the day. Our July trip we did the year after this one was a lot hotter.

I would definitely stay in Dusy Basin you’re first night. So gorgeous there. Then upper LeConte canyon, and a night at Evolution lake. From there you’d likely camp down near the San Juaquin river before turning up Paiute pass. Then last night off Paiute pass near Summit Lake. Gorgeous route! Have fun! 🤙🏼
