Backpacking Mammoth to Yosemite - John Muir Trail NOBO section hike #3, #chooseoutside +1 #jmt
After backpacking the entire John Muir Trail going Southbound in September of 2019, we decided we also want to hike the JMT Northbound. So far, we've done two other NOBO sections (that you can find in our video library).
This is our third section toward completing that goal. This time, our good buddy Hank decided to join us! This was his furthest backing trip to date, and it was a true pleasure having him along.
In August 2023, we set off from the Duck Lake trailhead in Mammoth Lakes, CA on a 6 day, 5 night adventure into the beautiful Sierra Nevada back country along the JMT. 83.5 miles later, we ended up at Happy Isles, in Yosemite Valley.

    My wife and I follow you guys and you two have inspired us to get out there more this year. Your dynamic is almost identical to ours, and many times you will do something or say something that results in my wife looking at me wondering if you're my long lost brother. We're section hiking parts of the JMT this year, not sure which direction we're going just yet (we have permits both directions) but your videos have given us the "trail intel" and inspiration to get ready for this summer (except for the mosquitos). We went over into Dusy for a night last year and did Whitney three times, so it'll be fun to put some extended miles on our feet. And as sad as it was last year, South Lake is going to be so very full this year! If you don't mind me asking, I'm curious what action camera you chose and what software you use to put your videos together? It's wonderful to see your videos that capture the beauty of the trail and less about themselves, this younger generation RUclipsrs spend 95% of their trail videos with their face in the camera. You two are really fun to watch and are great on camera, we appreciate how you capture so many beautiful shots of where you are at and list the elevation. Safe travels!

      @@chooseoutside8586 We will definitely be on the lookout for you two! Odds are our first hike will be from South Lake/Bishop Pass down to Whitney, we have a few contingency permits and as soon as we hear the passes aren't overly dangerous, it's game on (my uneducated guess is last week of July). Hoping to knock out a NOBO section later in the summer if we can get that Whitney part done early. Thanks for the information on the camera and software, we are going to *attempt* to record our journey this year and if you ever see the video you'll see the similarities, down to the constant ramen that my wife eats and how you stop to appreciate each and every beautiful moment. I can't wait to see it with my own eyes because I know all too well that cameras just can't really capture anything close to what you see and feel out there on that trail. @@chooseoutside8586 We'll be sure to link the video if end up making one. Once we receive our trail names we'll likely make a channel based upon that. What has to be really challenging is trying to take it all in with your own eyes and not spend key moments looking through a camera, and being our first time on that trail I'm a bit iffy on how well I will be documenting this. We got all the equipment now, but there's that side of me that says "walk it first, film it second". We'll see though, there are no guarantees in life and with us being over 50 we want to treat every hike as if it is our last (however for the record, we intend to be hiking well into our 80s!).

    What do you all do to get in shape for this hike? Awesome video! ive watched your others too and they are so cool as well. Also how did you do the whole car/shuttle transportation thing for this trip?

      Thanks so much Kevin and glad you enjoyed the videos!😊 As for getting in shape for the hike, we’re pretty active on our mountain bikes, do a little running and do some shorter local hikes on the weekends. We dropped our car off at South Lake and took the small shuttle that runs almost every day (at set times)down to Bishop. From there, we grabbed another shuttle (Eastern Sierra Transit) to Independence. One of the friends that we started the hike with was arriving the same time as us so she picked us up in town and drove us to the trailhead campground. Hope this helps!

    I never back packed any where else than the sierras ,but I've watched a lot of videos of other western mountain ranges, as far as I'm concerned the high sierras are the most beautiful awesome diverse range of high mountains anywhere so beautiful truly the range of light.

    Very good footage covering the whole hike, very helpful! I'm very interested in this trail but after viewing the trail I think there are some sections that would be too challenging for me, it would take me forever to get up some of those steep grades. I stuck around for your out-takes, quite funny!

      Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed it! I think if you take your time, all of the climbs are do-able- it just depends on how much time you have. There's plenty of water the whole way, which we certainly appreciated :) We just do this for fun, so we're so happy to hear you enjoyed our silliness while trying to make the video! haha Happy trails, and please let us know if you have any specific questions that might help you decide on a trip. Happy New Year!

    thanks for not only putting up your hiking video but actually documenting and explaining the logistics of the trip. it really helps. Not everyone has the time for a massive thru-hike or the desire. for me hiking in nature isnt a form of sport or challenge but rather to tune into a different frequency than that of civilization and to take time to actually look around, smell the aromas of the forest. Section hike is my deal trip. Did you plan and map out this section hike by yourself? is there a resource website for sierra section hikes? would love some info on it . thanks!

      Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video 😊 We agree with you… we did the entire JMT SOBO in 2019 and it was awesome, but wanted to do the trail NOBO as well. We don’t have the time to take off to hike it all at once, so we’re putting together smaller section hikes and plan on completing it by 2024. For planning all the hikes, we use the Tom Harrison map for the whole JMT. We just plan our days based on daily miles, passes, water availability, etc. Not sure about websites specifically for information, but we are on the FB John Muir Trail group and got a lot of information (and can ask questions) from that group. Let us know if you have any other questions. Have fun hiking this season!😃

    what were the mosquitoes like? Temps?

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586 Год назад

      Well, the mosquitos were crazy bad on the downside of Piute Pass near Hutchinson Meadow. After that, they were still around but tolerable. We had great temps at night and not too hot during the day. Our July trip we did the year after this one was a lot hotter.

    I am interested in doing this trail. Which trailhead did you use and what permit if any do you need?

    • @chooseoutside8586
      @chooseoutside8586 2 года назад

      Hi! We got a permit for the River Trail out of Agnew Meadows. Yes, you need a permit if you will be camping. Day hiking is allowed without a permit for this area. Have a great time out there!
