  • After backpacking the entire John Muir Trail going Southbound in September of 2019, we decided we also want to hike the JMT Northbound. So far, we've done two other NOBO sections (that you can find in our video library).
This is our third section toward completing that goal. This time, our good buddy Hank decided to join us! This was his furthest backing trip to date, and it was a true pleasure having him along.
In August 2023, we set off from the Duck Lake trailhead in Mammoth Lakes, CA on a 6 day, 5 night adventure into the beautiful Sierra Nevada back country along the JMT. 83.5 miles later, we ended up at Happy Isles, in Yosemite Valley.
This trip included some beautiful parts of Mammoth Lakes, Red's Meadow, Garnet & Thousand Island Lakes, Island Pass, Donohue Pass, Lyell Canyon, Tuolumne Meadows and throughout Yosemite.
If you would like to hike the John Muir Trail Northbound, but can't do the whole thing at once, due to timing, work, physical fitness, or otherwise- we highly recommend this section hike.
This coming August 2024, we'll be completing our final section going NOBO, hiking from Horseshoe Meadows to Onion Valley via Kearsarge Pass (super hard to get a permit from Whitney portal).
If you have any questions, please comment and we'll get back with you as soon as possible.
Thank you for watching. If you enjoyed our video, please like and subscribe to our channel (and click the bell to be notified!); we'll be adding more videos soon!

I truly enjoy watching the two of you and your backpacking adventures! My sister-in-law and I were NOBO from Mammoth Pass to Happy Isles Aug 30 - Sept 3 for our final section of the JMT NOBO. Two days behind you! Wish we could have met out there - your positivity and spirit is inspirational! And yes, that climb to Rosalie (day 1 for us) was BRUTAL! Hardest day I ever had on the trail!

Thanks so much for your kind words! :) Oh wow! We almost ran into you two. Yeah, definitely no joke on that Rosalie climb! Hope you guys had a great time and maybe we'll see you on the trail next summer! (We'll be finishing up our last NOBO section!)

Great video! I did the thousand island lake loop the past two LDW, doing mammoth (via the high trail) to happy isles this LDW, camping at thousand island lake the first night. Where did you guys camp each night? I caught a few of the locations in the video but missed a couple. Any thoughts/recommendations on best places to camp as you've done the trip would be greatly appreciated! We are going to do 4-5 nights. Cheers!

Thanks! So glad you liked it :)
Thousand Island lake is gorgeous, I think you'll really like that lake.
We camped at Deer Creek, then Rosalie Lake, then Island pass, Lyell Canyon, and finally Sunrise high Sierra camp for the last night. We enjoyed these spots, and recommend them. When we're planning, we map out reasonable distances, and also take passes, water availability and terrain into consideration. Enjoy your hike and let us know if you have more questions! Happy trails

Hello! Really enjoyed this video! I have done some hikes in the Eastern Sierra, I live near Fresno, but have never ended up so far from my starting trailhead. So my question is, what were your logistics to get back to the campervan or get it to Yosemite at the end? Take care!

Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed the video! We were actually lucky that Hank’s family had planned a trip to Yosemite Valley the same time we were finishing up the hike, so we just rode back with his wife to our van. You can also take shuttles all over the eastern Sierras (including to and from Yosemite - originally we were going to do that). On a couple of our other trips, we took shuttles and it worked out perfect! Happy trails!😄

We just wanted to say how great this was to see y’all out on trail again, you really capture the human moments out there. My wife and I were on the trail south of you heading toward Whitney in mid September, we originally had an August start date but canceled at the last second when we saw the hurricane zeroing in on the region. We hope to someday run into y’all out there somewhere! Do you have an email or website I can contact you through? I have some info regarding a permit you are seeking.

Always enjoy your videos. Lots of JMT video out there, but yours are well done and very fun. But you've used the same music a pretty lot. Maybe time for new background music?....
