Thanks! I'm 61 and I'm looking forward to quiting the 9-5 life in the next few years too! Andrea and I can't wait to have more time for epic backpacking trips like this!
@@octico totally agree. We spend at least 2 full weeks backpacking each year in addition to many 2 and 3 day weekend backpacking trips throughout the year.
@@octico I totally agree as well and do get some long weekends in northern MN on the Superior Trail on the north shore and the Ice Age trail in WI. My issue is living in WI to get west is not that easy. Hiking the JMT I will need four weeks for travel, acclimation and hiking time.
Myself and three friends did this in mid Sept '22. We are all in our early 60's, none of us had ever done distance/overnight backpacking. My biggest concern was altitude, seeing as 2 of the group lived below 1000ft above sea level. We spent one night at Sentinel campground, Roads End side of trail head, then proceeded clockwise to Upper Paradise, then Woods Creek, Middle Rae, Vidette Meadow, Sphynx Junction then back to Roads End, 7 days, 6 nights, we weren't in any hurry at all. No major injuries, altitude wasn't a factor, a few deer and one bear. The scenery was spectacular to say the least, I've got the bug. Thanx for this video, brought back soul cleansing memories.....CRUNCH ON!
This video is beautifully shot; it is so tranquil and meditative. We we planning a trip to Lassen in two weeks, but now we have decided to the first portion of the Rae Lakes Loop instead. Thank you for sharing this video of your trip - we appreciate it very much!😊
What an amazing video. I hope you and Andrea are healthy and doing well. I went on the Rae lakes Loop in my 20’s ( a long time ago ) went out of Roads End and went counter clockwise around the loop that way an awesome trip.
Thanks Larry! Andrea and I are well and hope you and Trish had some great hiking adventures this summer. Wow, going counterclockwise looks tough. Lots of elevation gain from Roads End to Glen Pass.
I kept my mapping app running on computer every footstep to track your progress during the video. We tried to do this hike in 2022 but a hamstring and fire smoke got in the way. Really a good video, congratulations on the hike. Someday... (doing a different section in August 2024). Thank you for this inspiration.

Very nice video of an amazing trip. It was nice running into you both this last weekend. Thanks for your tips on PCT Section hiking! Thanks! Andrea and I really enjoyed meeting you too Richard. We suggest the book "Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Southern California, Section Hiking from Campo to Tuolumne Meadows" by Shawnte Salabert, Mountaineers Books - great info with plenty of detail on PCT sections. Also, I think we mentioned the app FarOut, essential data when on the trail regarding campsites and water sources. If you message me on Instagram, @rsarpolus, perhaps we can exchange email addresses. I can suggest several weekend sections with campsite and car shuttle options, too much to write here.

Is water plentiful along the route? Can I find this trail and its connection to do loop on “ ALL TRAILS?” Or can you post each connection ( so I don’t get lost🤦♀️🤦♀️) 😅😅
Hi Mary, thanks so much for your kind words! I checked and I do see the Rae Lakes loop on All Trails. For a 5 day trip the Bear Vault 450 or Garcia bear canister should be fine, if you take dehydrated dinners, etc. Andrea and I use the Wild Ideas Weekender Bear Canister, lightweight but expensive. We never had to carry more than about 1.5 liters on the Rae Lakes Loop, longest stretch was 3 or 4 miles, usually crossed water sources much more often. The PCT section from Warner Springs to the PVC is a great one, we did it a few years ago with some friends, see: ruclips.net/video/RFOH8LOBKSc/видео.html
@@Heretic10001 thanks Dave! I've had problems with blisters from wet feet in the past so tried something new on this trip. Took off my socks and took out the insoles then went across. Hi Webfoot Wanderings! We did this hike the first week of July 2024. Yea, not a lot of snow, was a much less snowy winter compared to last year. Thanks!
@@cjjt66 thanks Christopher. Appreciate the comment about the music. I know there is a growing genre of silent hiking videos with little or no music. Thanks for the feedback!
Ok, here’s a genuine question. Why do people like to wear shorts when backpacking? Wouldn’t it increase the risk of the most important parts during a hike being injured, scratched(which may lead to infections), and bitten by ticks (or snakes or any other critters)?
Good question. Andrea almost always wears long pants, I usually opt for shorts, especially when it's hot as it was on this trip. In the Sierras most of the main trails are well maintained. Occasionally you come across some trails that are overgrown or have downed trees, long pants help. Long pants especially help with mosquitos, but I've found tics on me even when wearing long pants. Rattlesnakes probably could bite right though the typical light weight hiking pants we wear. We do a lot of off trail hiking in the desert during the winter, almost always opt for long pants do to all the pokey stuff. So, it's a personal choice, based on your comfort level and trail conditions.
Definitely one of the best loops in the Sierras I believe. Not sure about best in the US as I've not done any backpacking in the Cascades of Washington or the Colorado rockies which are both spectacular - I imagine there is some great loops there and many other places.
