  • I was lucky enough to score the last campsite at the North Lake Campground a couple days before our trip started. The campground does not have potable water, however several streams run throughout the campground that you can filter water. There are pit toilets that are really well maintained, and each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, and a bear box. There are three sites that are walk-ins.
    I parked my car at the North Lake parking area about ¼ mile east of the campground near the Bishop Pack Station. There are restrooms at the parking area as well. There are also trash receptacles at the parking area.
    A shuttle is available two times a day (morning and late afternoon) through Labor Day weekend, so be sure to check the Eastern Sierra Transit website for their schedule. www.estransit..... Reservations are not required for the shuttle, and the cost is $5 per person. The driver doesn’t carry change, so bring exact fare. If you use the shuttle to get to North Lake, you will have a 2-mile walk up the gravel road to the trailhead parking lot. The shuttle also stops at Lake Sabrina and South Lake.
    We started around 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 29, 2020, from the North Lake Campground in Inyo National Forest. Our plan was to hike over Piute Pass to Upper Golden Trout Lake which would be around 7 miles. Camping is not allowed at Lower Golden Trout Lake. My friend Debbie and I decided to go a bit further on day one to set us up better for a campsite on day 2, so we headed toward Hutchinson Meadow which would put us at about 12 miles for the day. I'm not sure how, but we blew past the Hutchinson Meadow (I assume it was during multiple stream crossings near the meadow) by at least a half-mile and had to double-back before finding a suitable campsite. Piute Creek wasn't far from our campsite, and it was easy enough to access water. We hiked 13.1 miles on day 1, with 2,047’ of ascent, 2,095’ descent, and 43,311 steps!
    Day 2 started around 8:45 AM. The first three miles of the hike out of Hutchinson Meadow was nice - shaded in most areas and follows Piute Creek. The last two miles however were very exposed, steep and rocky, and seemed to take FOREVER to get through. We were quite happy to finally reach the JMT junction at the 5.1-mile mark for the day. We took a nice break for lunch and enjoyed the shade of a beautiful tree. We ended our day near the Goddard Canyon Junction. We hiked 8.94 miles on day 2 with 1,334’ ascent, 2,339 descent, and 30,382 steps!
    Be sure to check out Part 2 of this trip. It was my personal favorite of the trip, and Evolution Basin is THE most amazing area I have ever seen!

    I decided to throw in a timelapse of me putting my tent up...just for grins. It isn't often that you can actually put stakes into the ground for every attachment point in the Sierra. LOL!

    Thumbs up indeed and hi to Deb, nice to have a nice neighbour. Those were big packs on the rocky trail, so respect to you both, it looked hard work. The scenery was breathtaking and so worth all that hard work to get up there and great lunch spot and yeah, that is the life right there. After almost 9 miles I bet it was nice to finally pitch that tent, cheers Alan

    Brings back memories from when we hiked that loop in Sep 2018. At 8:28, you label a peak as Mt Emerson. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's Mt Humphreys. Anyway, thanks for sharing this great video. Such a beautiful place.

      You are probably right! I was relying on an app to give me the peak names. It really is beautiful - and I'm thinking worthy of another trip in the next season. I think September is the best time for this hike - if you can avoid all the wildfires. Thanks so much for watching!

      The permits for the trip weren't too hard to get, but you need to reserve them early. August is the best time to go in my opinion. Bugs are at a minimum and the monsoon settles down so you have some pretty awesome weather. I hope you can make it for this one!

    Outstanding video Maryann, I enjoyed how you vocally and visually documented your trip in this video. The sights were amazing and being a photographer I am sure you took many great pictures. How do you like the Go Pro 360? I am waiting for their new release this month on the Hero 9.

    • @MaryannHazel
      @MaryannHazel  4 года назад +1

      So far, I'm digging the 360. Sadly, I didn't use it nearly as much as I should have. I hadn't taken the time to figure out the processing portion of the 360, so I was a little hesitant to take much with it. But what I did take turned out pretty cool now that I've figured out how to use the software on my iPad. Wishing I used it more now - especially after carrying the damned thing around for almost 60 miles. LOL! There is something up with my Hero 7. I only got one clip from it. Every time I went to use it, the battery was dead. I need to open a ticket with GoPro. I turned off GPS, voice recognition, and anything else that might drain the battery and still have the same issue. I gave up trying to use it. Hoping the Hero 9 is worth the upgrade. I've heard good things about the 8, but not enough to warrant an upgrade. Do you have any trips scheduled?

    What was the total miles? This info would be of big help and thank you. Did you stage two cars? How did that work?

    • @MaryannHazel
      @MaryannHazel  Месяц назад

      Sheesh...I thought I put that in the description, but I guess I forgot. My mileage added up to 57.32 miles with 11,509' of ascent, 10,801 of descent, and 187,179 steps!. I left my vehicle parked in the North Lake parking lot and my friend's husband picked us up at the South Lake parking lot which was awesome. Otherwise, I would have been hitching a ride back to North Lake to get my vehicle. I've read that it is pretty easy to get a ride with all the day hikers that go up toward Bishop Pass. I could have walked, but it would have been a long 12-mile road walk to North Lake. Construction was being done in the South Lake parking lot, so you couldn't park vehicles at that time. I'm not sure if that has changed now.

    • @MaryannHazel
      @MaryannHazel  3 года назад
