Superb. Can't wait to hear the trail under my boots. I can close my eyes and put my mind eye right with the two of you. Thank you for sharing your experience once again.
Thanks for the memories..... Piute Pass was my first overnight backpacking venture. I hiked the Pass 50 yrs ago and it is just as beautiful as I remember.
In the early 1980's we went out of that same road end and went up to Lamarck Lakes and then cross country and over Lamarck Col, down Darwin Canyon to the PCT.
Hello my outdoors friend, sincere thanks for sharing this beautifully filmed video. Your video brings back some very pleasant memories from decades ago. Four of us hiked into Paiute Pass for a three day two night adventure. We caught an abundance of Golden trout. The best hike ever. You folks take care and stay safe and healthy. 🤗
Sounds like an amazing 3-day escape! Which lake(s) did you all fish for the goldens? What type of bait? I’ve been watching several fishing channels lately and am thinking of incorporating more fishing while on my day hikes / overnights. Take care, Ronald!
Nice idea for an easygoing one-nighter. Paiute is probably the most mild gateway into the backcountry. Shepherd, Mill Creek and Pine Creek are the grunts. You should get one of those fuzzy covers for your microphone so the wind doesn’t drown out your voice. Hope your wife was OK. She seemed subdued.
Absolutely beautiful. Very well done. I like especially that you're stretching your videos out, allowing more time to savor the beauty of the landscape you're in. Can't wait to see your upcoming Sonora vid if you're still going back up later this summer that is. The stills and slow pans at the end were excellent too. All 'round brill. Cheers!
Great video, loved the addition of the still photos at the end. You two are so very fortunate to have such beautiful opportunities for hiking relatively close to home. Thanks for sharing! And one of these days we need to learn how your wife got her nickname.
The day before i met you in the Little Lake Valley during the Labor Day we went to Lamarck lake and was wondering about the Piute Pass. Thanks for sharing your experience and I can't wait to go back that trail.
You drove up from LA and slept at 11,000 feet the same day? Seems to this flatlander that'd be asking for an altitude headache, but you did it. Nicely done.
Another story: My future wife said she was interested in hiking and backpacking. I had her take back in the day BMTC Course by the Sierra Club. She hiked a couple of times, went scuba diving, and even did two skydives. A year after we got married I asked her why she wasn't interested in hiking anymore. Silly boy me, she just wanted to marry me, LOL. Since then I've hiked and traveled to Europe alone.
I did that hike with my best bud years ago. I was going to treat him to a wilderness BBQ by bringing rib eye steaks, salad, corn on the cob. The steaks I bbq'd on a packable grill. I went ahead of him, set up camp, but sadly he developed a migraine headache (we had acclimatized at the trailhead the night before). I wound up eating the steaks by myself. Next day I hiked solo to the pass and back. The following year I did the trans Sierra hike from North Lake to Florence Lake on the west side. Didn't see a human for two days, loved it.
I love all your videos what is the elevation gain out of North Lake to piute Lake? I've been up Shadow Lake Trail a few times also I just loved it up there keep making these wonderful videos
Great entry point to some really special places. As an aside, it looks like your wife's backpack could be better fit. All things being equal, load lifters at 45 (rather than flush against the straps), and the straps (loosely) on the shoulders should distribute the weight better and make for a more comfortable ride, especially on longer trips.
I love that you get out there and get after it even for an overnighter. What 2-3 day trip do you recommend from the West side for someone just getting back into backpacking after 25 years. I was thinking Jenny Lakes. Do you feel that's a safe spot for solo female? I can go with the hubby but want to try solo.
Anywhere in Yosemite is very safe. I see a lot of solo female hikers nowadays. Jennie Lakes is great and most likely you would have several other people camping at the lake each night.
The Jenny Lake to Weaver lake is a great loop and should have plenty of water in the lakes this time of the year, bring a fishing pole if you like to fish.

Did the North to South Lake loop Sep 2018. Incredibly beautiful!
Enjoy!! It’s on my list!
Did the North lake to South lake (not really a loop). It was an unforgettable experience. You will love it!
That view from Piute Pass is one of my favorite views.
We are going to be doing this in 2 weeks!! FIRST TIME EVER visiting Colorado from the plains of Oklahoma!! CANT WAIT!!

That was great👍I followed along on Google maps while I watched. That area begs for a longer stay. I hope to do it someday 🌞

Nice meeting you, Peter. Piute is wonderful - numerous lakes and views. Enjoy if you go!!
PP is definitely more beautiful and less strenuous. The Lamarck trail is really a grunt especially going to the Col, ugh.
Thanks for sharing your hike with us. Will be out there in a couple weeks to hike mono pass and some of the JMT. Again thanks for the vids!
Awesome! Will be hiking mono pass next weekend - looks like an amazing trail out of rock creek. Enjoy your trip!!

Nice production. Thanks
Are most of your trips done on the weekends?
Thank you! Yes, most trips are done on the weekend.
Great video. What is the new tent and the specs? Have you ever considered a video on what you carry?

When do you secure your passes for these trips? Same day?
I too enjoy Black Bart chili. Have you tried the walnut, date, raisin oatmeal? Just right. Have a good one, Terry
It’s my go to! Hmmm can’t say I have tried the oatmeal - is it by Alpine Air?

Lobbed this hike. Was there a big gain in elevation?
That was loovved, loved this hike.
Thanks! About 2,000 feet
Did you have to get a permit to overnight camp here?

Were you up there during the Lone Pine EQ? Thinking the rockslide you saw was one of the results...
Yes we discovered it was the same time as the the Lone Pine earth quake.
