I'm a retired ROK Army Mountain Recon and have used variety of K-series firearms extensively during my service (K1A, K2, K201, K2C1, K3,... all the way to K14) And here are some things I've felt about K2 patent rifles. The O-ring type front sight post was a deliberate choice from ADD because it is notably easier than 'trident' sight to teach new conscripts how to acquire the target and hit it. However, for skilled veteran the fixed and enclosed front sight was quite annoying especially when mounting optics. 360º swiveling fire selector is utter trash. The fire selector switch is a downgraded copycat of ARs' selector switch. It is quite uncomfortable to use your thumb when going from SEMI to SAFE, so most of us had to let go of the pistol grip and use our middle finger to flip it. The gas regulator is flawed from design. Sure, having an adjustable gas system as early as 70s was pretty neat, especially for country like ROK, where summer reaches +40ºC and winter is -20ºC. However, the hinge mechanism for the gas plug is too weak resulting issues like the plug launching off your rifle when firing. I saw pictures of some foreign armed forces that imported K2s applying duct tape on the gas plug to prevent this.
At the time K1 was adopted the primary SMG that Special Warfare Command fielded was old American M3 'Grease Gun'. Hence the reason why K1 received the SMG designation even tho its clearly an MAR or Carbine. This tradition continues to this day, so the new short barrel 5.56 rifle named K15; designed to phase out K1s for Special Forces is also designated as SMG.
Also, around 1988-89, the Australian Army was looking for a new weapon to possibly phase out the newly introduced AUG as it was quite expensive. When the K1-K2 came onto the scene the Australian Defense Force Board latched onto it and ran numerous tests. It was a strong contender but was apparently reported to have failed in some crucial field trials and with it being a new rifle Korea was asking more then Styer did for the AUG so the Australian Army just ditched it. Funny that there's a possible timeline Australia adopted the K series.
I remember seeing these guns for the first time in Point Blank, a Korean counter strike kind of clone. Both the K1 and K2 were the default main weapons available to everyone, as there was no way of aquiring any other weapons permanently (F2P currency weapons were sold in units for each time you spawn while P2W currency ones were limited time rentals).
Important context: South Korea was actually the worse off Korea to live until the 80s. The rapid industrialization happened in the 1970s because the country was a dictatorship. Park Chung Hee took power through a military coup in 1961, although he did allow elections. He pushed for industrialization, set up the business conglomerates that still rule South Korea with an iron fist, and took a lot of US aid to fund all this. In 1971 his political opposition got enough votes to threaten his rule, so he declared a national emergency, then martial law the next year. That lasted until 1979 when he was assassinated by the head of the KCIA (as in literally the Korean Central Intelligence Agency). That guy and his allies were then overthrown by another military dictatorship not even a week later, with another general in power.
I love the K2. Few Video games have them. Cod Ghost has the PCC version and Ironsight has the rifle version. I think the best depiction is in that battlefield clone, WW3.
The K2 appears in marauders (tarkov in Space!) which is a weird choice, I can understand the stoner 63 for US forces but the K2? There's gotta be a reason in universe for that

So the k2 is an ar 180. And yes, it's a real gun. The AR 180 is supposed to be a low cost cheap variant. Of the ar 15 And was designed for countries with a low domesticated firearmy on production Consist of mainly stamps steel. Let's make the good easier to make. An overall cheaper. And the k2 embodies that.
If anyone has used it while serving like I have in the ROK Air Force, they know how much of a piece of trash the K2 rifle is. "But.. muh Daewoo and Chaebol Aesthetics..." Koreaboos will cry if they actually get this chinese manufacturing tier trash rifle in their hands.

Legit my whole love for the K1a and K2 came from playing Vigil in rainbow six
My appreciation came from my Warface experience who had both K1 (as a SMG for some reason) and the K2(correctly marked as an assault rifle).
Mine came from Girls' Frontline.
for real its goated
Mine was in CoD Ghosts, I believe it was called the K7, it was an SMG with integrated suppressor and it was really fun to use
Ah yes. The weapons that always appeared in F2P Korean FPS games.
Yes, Korean's "F2P" FPS-es
In the pay to win Point Blank Zepetto K2 is the freebie AR. Others are rental only.
The only rifles that seems to have a semblance of recoil while other weapons are just a fucking lasers.
