This is one of the main reasons I'm moving to REPAER. I can be anywhere in the world and still have all my settings and preferences, and also use multiple devices of my own... outstanding
For those curious about upgrading a portable install, I just tested upgrading a Windows portable install from 6.04 to 6.05. Very easy, during the upgrade just choose the portable install folder and you're done in less than a minute. Remember though, if you have a lot of plugins like most people (hundreds or 1000+), each portable install needs to scan them so the initial installs can take many minutes.
Power tip! I needed this! I have a PC with very limited internal hard drive space. It’s great to be able to run a portable install from an external drive.
I ONLY do portable installs (Windows). So easy to backup / tweak / save everything in one place. Fantastic. The only thing I can't do is rewire other stuff, but not usually necessary. Awesome video, Kenny.
I love portable Reaper. It's incredibly helpful for troubleshooting buggy plugins and overall tidiness. EG, I have some random vocal projects that I like working on using a portable Reaper but all my main heavy plugins and workflow templates are in my installed copy. Cheers Kenny
Hi Kenny. You've explained this portable install very well. As of today, there's been a lot of new features and updates. In particular, Reaper has Linux versions now, can you perhaps make a video that talks about the following, -Linux Portable Install like how to and how it differs from win&mac. -Multi-platform Portable Installs (eg. win & linux versions in 1 usb) Thank you in advance
hi Kenny. love your videos. new to reaper. people (win conway) talk about a procedure of turning a portable install into a regular install. wondering what that looks like on a mac (currently driving a mac mini 3.2 mhz 6 cores maybe i dunno.....four door, leather)
Hi Kenny! I'm still having problem in applying what you have said in this tutorial. I went on trying to solve the problem I first mention, 3 months ago, concerning the text file ending with ini. I finally come out with a text file ending with .ini. Unfortunately, when I attempt to open the portable version of reaper created I still have the message saying that reaper cannot open. Could you help please? Thanks
Hi Kenny, I am just wondering I want to set up a portable install, but my question is my original version is on a PC laptop and I want to put a portable install on to a MacBook Air. Is this possible. Thanks
Plugins are the only thing NOT part of the portable install. So you just need to install them once in your system and they will work with all of them. But keep in mind that each portable install is NOT completely portable because the plugins are NOT installed in that folder.
Question: if the program comes from a flash drive instead of a sata or nvme, it’s reasonable to think that the program will need more time to function, especially if it has to scan for plugins in the internal drivers. If that’s the case, do we need a flash drive that transfers data faster? And how much storage do you recommend?
i'd say you need at least a few gigs free on a drive. Reaper is way smaller than that, but speeds will be slower if the drive is smaller/has less free space. Generally yes, you're right. A nice and fast drive will work better. I guess it also depends on if your plugins are heavy with samples, installed on the drive with Reaper or on the internal disk. In general, faster = better. Get a nice 64gb drive and stick Reaper on it, it'll be great.
Hi Kenny! Precious video as usual! Unfortunately, In my case it dosen't work though, I did all what you have said. The text edit step could be the problem... Because when I save it with the .ini type format, it appears different from what you have in the video. Mine has the type format written like this ini.txt . When I try to turn it to ini, it looks different and appears like and application command. The worst is that when I try to open the portable version of reaper, it cannot and there is a message that says reaper could be opened because it is corrupted. Could you send me a text file like yours so that I can just put it inside the portable reaper folder? Thank you!
Hi. I'm from Ukraine, and we have war right now. I never used portable version of Reaper, but I'll begin from today. Cuz it's tough to keep Reaper on PC and laptop is sync. And when the lights out - I can't export config from my PC. So keeping Reaper portable will make my life easier, and allow me to work even without electricity for few more hours. Thank u for the tutorial.
Looks like the way to do this is to right click show package contents on old version, do the same on new version copy contents from new to old, replace!

You have a way of explaining everything and making it simple. Going to buy Reaper now!
Thanks
He speaks fast, but he speaks clearly and understandably.
After ages.. thanks Kenny
That lifehack with different portable versions instead of project templates is lit!
So apart for ticking the portable install box what else applies to a PC install?

Thanks for the info, appreciate it a lot, but damn I had to watch this in 2x speed. Because. Of all. The stopping. Between. Phrases.
Are there any differences whatsoever using hte portable vs install version? Like themes missing or any possible caveats?
Can you make a tutorial with amp simulators? I’ve been trying to figure them out, but I can’t get them to work. Thanks, love your videos.
Sure!!!
Ok my question is is can you migrate 3rd party plugins into the portable install or do you need to reinstall them all to the portable install?

Thanks ,great tutoring.

Is portable version worth of updating?
Are there any performance drawbacks to portable installs?
Nope
This is what I was asking myself a lot, but if Kenny says no, it is no
how to save entire reaper project with all fx in usb drive sir.
Does the computer I run the portable version on have to be connected to the internet?
Nope
Is there a way to do this on Ubuntu?
Awesome video
