I switched to Synths when I was 17 and then started using the "Amiga 500" computer for MIDI sequencing. Later I switched to a "Pentium 2" PC with Windows 3.11. I don't need anything else. It is simple, fast, light on CPU, super-stable and owes nothing to any competitor. Stay safe.
Similar story to yours, but instead of an Amiga, I went with an Atari STE because it had MIDI ports already built in. I used DR. T's Exclusively, T.I.G.E.R. Dr T's KCS, etc, then when I switched to PC, I switched to Cakewalk, because Dr T's went out of business (Really LOVED Dr. T's) , then Cakewalk got bloated into Sonar which just got way too silly, so I looked for a cheaper alternative, and found Reaper.
Back in the 90s had some form of x86 machine and ran Cakewalk for DOS when it was midi only. Synced it up to an ADAT. I have been through various versions of Sonar, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Ableton Live. Now I use Reaper. It's a great setup and being that I am the same age as you and getting closer to fixed income, I let pretty much all of those licenses go. Just no compelling reason to keep using anything but Reaper.
Reaper has become my DAW of choice since when covid hit. I now have paid versions on my Win7 (could never get protools 7.xx to work outside of XP) and on my Win10 alongside Studio 1 and Cakewalk. Great video! I wish REAPER would add the ability to adjust toolbar and ruler font size and allow plugin screenshots in plugin finder for accessibility users!
You can adjust the font, font size and font style (bold, italics, regular, bold italic) for many, but not all, things by adjusting your theme settings! In Reaper's actions box, search for "Theme development: Show theme tweak/configuration window", run it, and enter "font" in the filter box. You can change the font of about 25 elements there.
Reaper is *the* most impressive software out there. small, stable, powerful. and absolutely better than most "professional" daws. I pay the license with absolute proud.
i've been looking at various DAW review videos to figure out what to get since Cakewalk went paid and the unpaid free started acting wonky. This video alone moved Reaper to my #1 spot now. Thank you for making this video. So well done.
To me, Reaper seems like it was created with a programmer's mindset. It feels to me like an IDE for music. I think this is what intimidates some people, especially if they're used to simulate the analog console workflow. However, with a bit of experience and adjusting to this "programmer's mindset", they'll find that Reaper actually offers the most personal workflow, and it's actually super intuitive (to that mindset). Also, while the big number of options could seem confusing, it actually allows the simplest and fastest solutions to all kinds of tasks. I mean, effect containers? That's recursive effect channels. This addition to Reaper 7 is the cherry on top of the cake.
Reaper is like buying a VW Golf, and having an unlimited budget for customizing it. After putting in the twin turbo, racing suspension, nitro switch, racing mag wheels etc, you end up having a car that beats any luxury sports car for a fraction of the price.
Soon yull be able to create quantum tunnels and LFOs that go from a plank length to universal timescales running parallel with multiverse busses running into multiple sub projects and save as a track template lol😂❤. Reaper is freedom.
I found an awesome time saving feature in some other DAWs - All tracks are by default routed to 'sends' at the time of creation. All you have to do is change the volume going out. I hope Reaper implements it someday. It's very cool.
A key feature that I use is being able to record the output of that track directly into the timeline. This is brilliant if you want to use plugin instruments but record them as audio, I do this a lot so that i'm not tempted to quantise or correct the MIDI Data, you also haven't got to worry about whether you held the sustain pedal before recording, and can start the recording with a ready held note too. I've not seen that feature in any other DAW i've used. It provides an outboard experience with the variety and selection of plugins. Working in this way creates a more humane recording to my ear.
The K strikes again! Always healthy to watch every video of yours as I have for years by now. Reminders or revealers for newbies or oldies. So thank you, Kenny
Love Reaper ❤ Great DAW with very powerful video features! With some adjustments to the Notation editor (some bug fixing and a little increase in functionality, or a two-way native connection with external notation software) it could be the PERFECT DAW for professional media composers!
This video helps giving perspective even for more experienced users, we are so accustomed to being told how to do things and accept what things you can't do that when it comes to having this much freedom sometimes it seems much too handle, im glad i accepted this journey and invested this time figuring out how to do what i wanted to do in reaper, by doing this i've earned so much valuable knowledge about audio and programming audio in general, thank you for your effort kenny you really are a guru haha
Three that I enjoy 1 Many free plugin from users. 2 You can easily write and modify plugin to do special task. 3 the track control files are in plain text allowing you to modify and edit it in Word or Excel.
Great video. It really is some amazing programming skill to develop such an application with so much complexity, speed and versatility, packaged into a program that is so small in size by todays standards. Top top development. Great video - as always. 👍
06:04 Oh Man... I didn't know it had such a function until now... thank you... with this is way easier to set the correct audio level before the effects. 07:58 is it also timesaver...this DAW is brilliant... i use it since 3 years but i see is way more complicated as i supposed it. Many thanks Kenny!
Another BIG argument. Reaper never crashes. I have been using Reaper daily for over 10 years. A few weeks ago, I had to use PT for adaptation reasons in a commin project. I remembered the frustration of using a DAW that crashes 3 times a day for no apparent reason... With REAPER, I NEVER have any problems. In the studio, FOH, on stage,... Never a crash. This simple and objective fact make reaper shine.
Never really thought about it but yea...I don't think I've ever had REAPER crash. I've had plugins crash and take the project with them, but I don't think I've ever, in a decade and a half, had REAPER itself crash. Pretty impressive!!
Reaper is absolutely amazing and almost perfect. Personally, I would like to have a docking area for the second monitor and font colors per track. But these are luxury problems.
I paid for a License, because I feel that these tech Wizards should be compensated for the incredible tools they give us. Just like musicians. Being a long-time, and current Pro Tools user, I can still see the power of Reaper, and I'm excited to learn more about how to use it.
Kenny! Thank you! great stuff! Question? I'd dig seeing a series of you recording a song with a band start to finish. Not really just a group of quick cuts and keeping it brief. I mean from start to finish showing us more of a real time for the project. Just saying...
Used pretty much every DAW in the planet, and there's nothing like Reaper, it's in a league of its own. You did mention pretty much most things, but you didn't mention, one thing about Reaper which is one of the biggest reason why I use Reaper over any other DAW, it's the Reaper community and all the community made ReaScripts and JSFX that add enormous amount of functionality to Reaper.
Reaper for the win! I came for the time-stretching, stayed for the customization. If someone can only explain how to properly route signals with FabFilter's Pro-Q 3, I'd be a very happy man!
Great vid. Love your vids but the...way you...talk...drives me...nuts. You didn't do it too much in this vid...THANK YOU!! Tossed you a sub. Keep up the good work!!
Yes yes and yes Sir!!! i joined reaper recently.. highly recommend switching to reaper because it will save thousands and thousands of hours due to its straight workflow and customization. I could add tons of not mentioned pros that Reaper does that just rock😊
The only thing I don’t like about reaper is the default setting is the most non-straightforward amongst all the DAWs if that makes sense. I moved on to ableton live and chbase now, but still appreciate it, it helped me make music when I first started
Love it!! One little niggle though. I wish the midi panel had a more...hmm. ...organic. ... relationship with its associated track. i.e. instead of opening in a new window/panel it could open in an expanded track on the actual timeline. Would make things much easier. Just sayin.
Oh, and it works on Apple Mac (including M1/2/3/4) as well as Windows. And Linux, too. New beta Windows 11 on ARM64 build already available. So it's about as future-proofed as you can get. It really is a remarkable piece of software
Reaper is hands down the best DAW out there. The community alone, including REAPER Mania, is one of the best reasons to buy the software. Then there's the infinite amount of customizing your workflow. It's a thing of beauty.
I feel like there's not one thing I really like about Ableton, I can click on everything in Ableton and move it using the keyboard arrows, volumes, knobs, frequencies of an equalizer, this is so practical for my work workflow, can you tell me in a simple way how to do this in Reaper?
Thanks Kenny, one thing for me that makes Reaper special is that out of the millions of times I've used it, it may have crashed once!! and that was because of a dodgy plugin. I always come back home to Reaper if I stray, because its the best ever DAW ever created for humble bucks.
Hi Kenny. Greight vid. Yes my colege professor would agree with this vid. Infact the fact Reaper is so little and the price are 2 of the biggest things he liked about it. But the littlenesss and the price he also notes comes at a cost. He feels Reaper is too bair bones. He doesn't like the Rea plugins. But then again he uses Logic and Pro Tules. His main choice of those of corse being Logic. I'm using it cause on PC it's accessible.
simply stated, this is the best DAW on the market today, be it for Studio or Live applications. Those of us who use Reaper already know this. Stability, Stability.....Stability.
Bonjour j'utilise reaper depuis 5 ans avec la licence je suis ravis il manque une chose sur reaper les couleurs sur les fx pour gagner en lisibilité Merci pour vos explications et vos vidéo Je suis de Lyon France
It's funny how portable mode has become a valuable selling point with modern software when back in the day, all software operated within it's own folder and sub-folders. But Reaper has drastically improved by leaps and bounds over the past 10 years where I especially now feel guilty for not buying a license yet. I plan on doing so as soon as I can to support the company and heck, I might as well pay for WinRAR too while I'm at it lol. 😇
On Windows, at least, there have always been system dependencies, which I assume the portable install either doesn't need or has included. Also, almost all software writes things to the registry, which makes it inherently unportable. I assume Reaper portable doesn't.
I’ve customized my reaper install to something that nobody would even guess was reaper. It’s practically my own personal daw that I built from reaper. I run it on arch Linux. No reason for me to ever use any other daw ever again.
What about film scoring with Reaper? Do people use it for this as well? Can it do automated tempo maps to hit sync points? About mixing, is it possible to split the mix console on multiple screens? Does it have a chord track? An articulation management lane? I know a lot of people swear by Reaper but this is the DAW I probably know the less about.
In all seriousness, the only thing I can think of Reaper needing some extra help is the sheer number of options are quite intimidating. A great UX designer + researcher should go that aspect. The editing part is so great and works so well that every time I have to work with Melodyne I want to punch a drywall in frustration. Cubase is the same: the engineer I worked with didn't get how come I don't need to tell if it is going to be a stereo or a mono track and I didn't why do I need to know that in advance?
Haha. The only feature that got me to use Reaper is the $60 license that's good for 2 major versions. No subscription ware. I didn't know about the portable installs feature. That's really cool. Track folders is awesome because I was using a bus to do that with
Folders are as unshiny and unspectacular looking as it gets, but they are amazingly useful! Just don't do like me and keep manually routing once you start using folders -- took me a while to stop doing that, out of habit.
You think Reaper will some day get a cliplauncher? (Similar to Bitwigs, alongside the arranger, with vertical scenes) And does it have Plugin Sandboxing and is it generally even suitable for live performance (being able to load VSTs on the fly without stutters/glitches in Playback etc)?
The actual fact that Reaper lets you usr it after the 60 days mafe me buy it.... after using it for about 160 days.... I felt i needed to buy it it was that good.
You missed the most incredible feature of Reaper, it has the most comprehensive help system I've ever seen called Kenny Gioia!

Learned so much! Mind blown! 😮
It is extremely easy to find online resources for Reaper, in large part thanks to this channel.
The K strikes again! Always healthy to watch every video of yours as I have for years by now. Reminders or revealers for newbies or oldies. So thank you, Kenny
Love Reaper ❤
Great DAW with very powerful video features!
With some adjustments to the Notation editor (some bug fixing and a little increase in functionality, or a two-way native connection with external notation software) it could be the PERFECT DAW for professional media composers!
you blow my mind every time. I never knew about the portable installs.
I don't use a third of the functions mentioned and still think it's great. Keep up the good work.
And even in this non-tutorial I learned things I didn’t know.
I love this DAW. Thx for giving the ‘industry standards’ a good shaking.
✌️
The efficiency for me. I couldn’t believe how quickly it downloaded and it boots up so quick. Reaper is a Godsend.
Great video. It really is some amazing programming skill to develop such an application with so much complexity, speed and versatility, packaged into a program that is so small in size by todays standards. Top top development.
Great video - as always. 👍
Thanks for reminding me about sweeping!
The main reason why I use Reaper is because you Kenny! Before seen your videos i didnt like reaper but you are a legend! Thanks!
My forever DAW ❤❤
Thanks Kenny for your constant support for all Reaper users !
I'm glad that I moved from FL to Reaper
Another BIG argument.
Reaper never crashes. I have been using Reaper daily for over 10 years. A few weeks ago, I had to use PT for adaptation reasons in a commin project. I remembered the frustration of using a DAW that crashes 3 times a day for no apparent reason... With REAPER, I NEVER have any problems. In the studio, FOH, on stage,... Never a crash.
This simple and objective fact make reaper shine.
Bitwig also never crashes. Logic has some annoying bugs, but it is pretty stable.
Never really thought about it but yea...I don't think I've ever had REAPER crash. I've had plugins crash and take the project with them, but I don't think I've ever, in a decade and a half, had REAPER itself crash. Pretty impressive!!
I had Reaper crashing constantly when switching screensets, so… depends I guess
Great vid as always sir. Reaper is love, Reaper is life!
I have same point of view!
Reaper is absolutely amazing and almost perfect. Personally, I would like to have a docking area for the second monitor and font colors per track. But these are luxury problems.
After using it for almost a decade, I finally get answers to the "why?".
Best DAW ever
I paid for a License, because I feel that these tech Wizards should be compensated for the incredible tools they give us.
Just like musicians.
Being a long-time, and current Pro Tools user,
I can still see the power of Reaper, and I'm excited to learn more about how to use it.
Kenny! Thank you! great stuff! Question? I'd dig seeing a series of you recording a song with a band start to finish. Not really just a group of quick cuts and keeping it brief. I mean from start to finish showing us more of a real time for the project. Just saying...
Free updates and License is good for two versions!!! And We got Kenny to show us how to use it
Used pretty much every DAW in the planet, and there's nothing like Reaper, it's in a league of its own.
I use a Windows OS PC. The download size for a 64bit system is about 15MB.
What a powerful DAW with a small file size.
I love REAPER
Yeah, I was thinking "150 megs? Mine is a tenth of that." Reaper's dl size is much smaller than Kenny indicated.
Great vid. Love your vids but the...way you...talk...drives me...nuts. You didn't do it too much in this vid...THANK YOU!! Tossed you a sub. Keep up the good work!!
I don't even use Reaper (thinking about it) but I just like listening to this guy
Reaper is just a slap in the face to SO many other other programs out there, that's expensive, buggy, large, unveildly beasts.
Reaper works best with my hardware setup, and I find it easier to use than Cubase, which is the main reason I use it. Thanks for your great tutorials!
Reaper is hands down the best DAW out there. The community alone, including REAPER Mania, is one of the best reasons to buy the software. Then there's the infinite amount of customizing your workflow. It's a thing of beauty.
Your tutorials were amazing for me, but I just swapped my DAW.. funny timing for the video haha
It's always the fault of some sketchy VST developer. And in this regard, even NI is sketchy.
When will you release Reaper for iPad?
simply stated, this is the best DAW on the market today, be it for Studio or Live applications. Those of us who use Reaper already know this. Stability, Stability.....Stability.
Man I didn't know it is that good now... probably should try it sometime. 🙂
Reaper is the coolest music creation program.
Bonjour j'utilise reaper depuis 5 ans avec la licence je suis ravis il manque une chose sur reaper les couleurs sur les fx pour gagner en lisibilité Merci pour vos explications et vos vidéo Je suis de Lyon France
REAPER is absolutely the endgame DAW. I can't imagine any other one taking it over.
"Why Reaper"? Answer: "For infinite reasons" 🙂
"Reason"-Users now: "Huh?" ;)
@@MarcShake 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The absolute BEST DAW on the planet!
Kenny + Reaper = Perfection!!!
I’ve customized my reaper install to something that nobody would even guess was reaper. It’s practically my own personal daw that I built from reaper. I run it on arch Linux. No reason for me to ever use any other daw ever again.
Reaper da besssssst. Happy hallows mane
Thanks Kenny!
Best few quid I ever spent!
Should I still be using Recycle or is there any competition for Recycle? Does Reaper have an equivalent breakbeat processing/chopping app?
In all seriousness, the only thing I can think of Reaper needing some extra help is the sheer number of options are quite intimidating. A great UX designer + researcher should go that aspect. The editing part is so great and works so well that every time I have to work with Melodyne I want to punch a drywall in frustration. Cubase is the same: the engineer I worked with didn't get how come I don't need to tell if it is going to be a stereo or a mono track and I didn't why do I need to know that in advance?
I think even reaper 6, with proper config + custom actions and scripts would be ahead of most DAWs for years
@@poissonpuerile8897 Luckily I'm new to Reaper enough to where I can adjust, but yeah, it can be hard breaking a habit.
I always thought that Reaper is Reason and vice versa. At the time i found out which is which i was already using Mixraft.
Thank you Kenny !
I came from Ableton and for now Reaper is really replacing it for me, I'm enjoying the experience
This is the first I've heard about MegaBaby
Why Reaper ? Easy .. you get to have Kenny as your instructor
You think Reaper will some day get a cliplauncher? (Similar to Bitwigs, alongside the arranger, with vertical scenes)
And does it have Plugin Sandboxing and is it generally even suitable for live performance (being able to load VSTs on the fly without stutters/glitches in Playback etc)?
This is a great video!
The actual fact that Reaper lets you usr it after the 60 days mafe me buy it.... after using it for about 160 days.... I felt i needed to buy it it was that good.
One can spend a whole day tweaking\configuring Reaper. The best for recording!
