    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

AVID locked in clients with the help of the FBI, FBI replace NAGRA machines with ProTools in the 1990s, they purchase shares of avid, they have been protecting AVID, They have been spying on competitors, targeting threats to their investment,
it’s illegal for the FBI to have shares of a private sector unless it’s for a short term investigation, SHORT term with F.B.I. So glad I watched this. I used PT for years until they went to the subscription model. I switched to Ableton Live for about 6 more years making EDM & Techno. I like the fact that you can use cells. You can do that with Logic too, but it doesn't work as well. Well, Ableton crashes a LOT now. I went with Logic. Now, with Ableton AND PT, you can move the channels around in the mixer so you can organize things. In Logic... you CAN'T unless you click on the "read" button and put the channel in the arrangement window. In PT and Live, you can see the grid through the audio clip. You cannot in Logic. Those two things make me want to change DAWs again. I was thinking about going back to PT. Now, I'm thinking about Reaper. Thanks for this! Very timely

Great stuff Glenn, I always love your humor and support of Reaper. I wanted to make a comment about first DAW. Studio Vision Opcode was out way before Pro Tools. Of course the first workings of it was just midi, and we had to SMPTE time code it along with a cassette recorder. Secondly, you are right about a lot of music schools and what they teach, however, as a Graduate of Berklee College of Music, Berklee preached "signal flow, signal flow, signal flow" and "learn various DAWs" They are animate about students learning various DAWs, and learning what makes each of those DAWs special. Back in 2004, Berklee was animate about using Reason's drum sequencer. Every DAW's drum sequencer copies off of Reason's initial drum sequencer. Back in 2004 , Digital Performer, Reason, and Pro tools were equally supported and taught. Back in the late 80s to early 90s, Studio Opcode Vision was the DAW that was heavily taught at Berklee. Secondly, I love Reaper and I use it, but my main DAW is Logic Pro. I have been keeping up my skills using Reaper because I see the writing on the wall with subscription based platforms. I predicted Pro Tools would go subscription base and they did. I predicted Adobe would go subscription based and they did. I predicted Logic Pro would go subscription based, and they did with their ipad version, I suspect the computer OS version will be right around the corner. I suspect Finale Notation software will soon be subscription, that is why I use Musescore along with Finale, in case I have to switch. I love Reaper a lot, and I will be ready to use it full time when Logic Pro goes subscription base, however, I love my Logic Pro, and I will use it until it goes subscription base.

Reaper is great tbh. I bought the license for it a few years ago and it was definitely worth it for a number of things. Super modular. I have different layouts for different types of projects, music, voice over commentary, you can even inject videos from your phone or camera and tweak the audio from those. Reaper is great and I’m still learning a lot. You and BoothJunkie helped me get started and understand the software when I was still using the free version before I mostly understood it and paid for it. Tbh I’ll never switch from Reaper. It does wonders for whatever I need.

I first met Reaper when looking for a replacement for Cubase (having battled with Pro Tools thanks to another engineer who was at the studio before me), after downloading a Cubase update and discovering that the only changes they'd made were the appearance of the plugins, which in turn caused my (aging) computer to lag like a bastard.
I set out to find the ugliest DAW I could physically find with the logic being that if the DAW was ugly they'd probably sunk their R&D budget into making the fucking thing work.
That was 10 years ago, I've never once looked back. There hasn't been a SINGLE thing in Reaper I wasn't keen on that I couldn't just modify myself.
    Fuck Pro Tools.

I started with a limited version of Pro Tools , got 16 +8 tracks; you couldn't import plugins, but I found it likeable. I was then gifted an older but more featured LE version, which was older had had limitless tracks and took plugins. I hated it. Found out about Reaper, and hated it. Bought an Arturia controller, with Ableton Live Lite, but I used the good upgrade offer to get Live 10, which itself came with a free upgrade to Live 11. It took me a wee while to get used to Ableton, but now I'm very happy with it. OK, it was dearer than Reaper, but it does a ton of tuff and runs very well on my 2010 i5 computer (16GB RAM, SSDs and effortlessly overclocked from 2.8 > 3.66.) I didn't even consider buying/renting a full version of ProTools (you explained why, Glenn!) and I think the Ableton discounted price is very fair.
