Rich bass , i've tried all manner of basses at shops over the years though. and i can say with certainty that Gibson basses were by far the worse. I've also dabbled in guitar some never owned a gibson though. genrally their necks felt great to me , that being they were huge honking pieces of wood , but then i'm a bass player so it should feel good to me. that aside i can't stand their bridges , and every one i jammed with taht used them , were always tunning constantly. so in my experience Gibson is never good enough.

The frets on the other hand are rough on the edge and still goes out of tune more than my standards. I never had the desire to own a big G but I wouldn't blame Gibson for not being innovative. Whenever they try something new they fail. And they don't just fail because the new design was terrible but because no one actually wants Gibson to do something different. Just listen to what actual Gibson players have to say. They don't want the innovation, they want the oldschool stuff but manufactured with modern standards. Gibson basically does just that now and players seem to be happy with it. Just watch Ben Ellers recent video about his new Les Paul.

My other guitars are Aviator and Mayones. I'm not a lawyer or wealthy but I want my instrument to inspire me, feel good in my hands, and sound good. I have spent 20+ years just buying tons of sub 1k guitars. Now I just want a couple that will feel good and somewhat hold their value. I don't care where they are made. I also don't think anyone should have to justify their gear choices based on their ability, income or whatever. If you have a $300 harley benton and it inspires you fantastic. i find the sweet spot price range on instruments to be between 800-1600 dollars . you can find some really good instruments in that range with out stomping your bank account. past 1600 you see an exponential increase in diminishing return.
even fender has a few "lower cost" US made models in that price range if you just have to get a US instrument. but in general you can find just about any variant of any model of guitar or bass in that range of price. i've even seen some instruments with fanned frets in that range , and a few with micro tonal frets. So gonna have to agree to disagree with you on this point. past 1600 there's just not much more you can do to an instrument to make it play better than other 1600 dollar instruments. past 2000 and it's purely a name grab buy.

ESP has their own JDM brand, Edwards, that are absolutely fantastic. I have their ES335 copy that I paid $1,100 for and I love it. Seymour Duncan pickups, Gotoh hardware, and a carved maple top and back instead of pressed laminate. Essentially the same or better specs than the current 59 ES335 reissue Gibson is doing at 1/5 the cost.
Some of the 70's Japanese guitars are also great bang for the buck. I just picked up a 70's Carlo Robelli SG (essentially a re-badged Greco) for $250. Mahogany body, set neck, Maxon pickups, and someone ever replaced the tuners with Grovers back in the 70's. Or I could buy a Gibson case or guitar stand for almost the same price.....

Companies have been using mills and CNC type machines to rough out guitar shapes for decades, even in the 30s 40s & 50s. Giving the CNC all the credit while downplaying all of the finishing work that actually results in a guitar casts too much shade on the people who deserve credit for making the instrument work. This goes to every brand out there including the ones who sell good guitars at low costs. A CNC just roughs out a guitar shaped chunk of wood. It's all the men and women down the line that make guitars.

@@legacyShredder1 Finishing work doesn't make a guitar. the accuracy of the construction is what makes it, and that is what CNC provides: carbon copies. The reason that there are even intonation adjustments on old electric guitars, was to make up for the inconsistency of human drilled bridge holes. CNCs were refined to the point that PRS guitars stopped making adjustable bridges, because they could stamp them and still be perfectly intonated because they're made by machine and there's no variance in construction. CNCs are not "just roughing out the shape" they're doing ALL the operations, from shaping to placing holes, to routing pickup cutouts, to putting the fret slots in. Humans move the wood from machine to machine. That's all they do. They're even painted and lacquered by machine. The human element has for all intents and purposes been removed.

I’ve owned an Epiphone les Paul Gold Top for 26 years now. My guitar teacher immediately put Grover tuners on it, a thicker Tusk nut, and a new flush cable Jack on it. It’s really feels like a Gibson. Also funny enough the truss rod cover says Gibson, but the headstock says Epiphone. The pickups are HOT on this thing. It sounds like extra voltage is running through the pickups, perfect for rock based music. This thing has traveled all over the country and been to 100s of drunken bar gigs. The wood and massively thick amount of poly has withstood countless assaults up to and including being dropped on stage. This guitar is loud, plays smoothly and is indestructible and never goes out of tune. For an Epiphone with minor modifications it’s served me well over almost 30 years and I paid just under $500 for it in 1998, and I feel like I got a guitar that far exceeds that of how people talk about actual Gibsons.

I must have gotten lucky, I have a studio made in 2005, stays in tune, with the vintage tuners, bought used in mint condition. I chalk it up to being a freak of production, many don't stay in tune. I also have an Epiphone that has the Grover tuners, also stays in tune. Both sound good, and after a good bit of fret work on the Epiphone, it plays more or less just as good as the Gibson, sounds a bit different, but it can do everything the Gibson can do, just it didn't cost $1,000+. Made in Japan Jacksons, Mexican made strats and a Charvel, to round out my collection, and guess what? I enjoy and play all of them, it is just the feel of the instrument and mood that influences which one I pick up.
The idea of it has to be American made, cost's $2,000+, or it is totally junk really is pig swallow. Sure, you get what you pay for, but there does come a point where you can be just as happy with a less expensive, well set up and maintained instrument. If it is comfortable, sounds and plays good, and is well made, the name on the headstock matters not, nor does where it is made. You still can be great or suck at playing a $500 instrument as you can a $5,000, just ignore and get past the group think BS, find something that stays in tune, fits you and what you are trying to do musicwise, get it properly set up, and have fun.

My first (real) guitar was epiphone sg-400 pro. Loved it. For a few years I was dreaming of getting a proper Gibson SG. Almost even pulled the trigger a couple times, but I actually use the coil split on the epiphone and gibsons didn't seem to have it... Then at some point I got used Harley Benton Amarok 6 for drop C tuning for practically nothing. I've never dreamed of a gibson since. Now my only dilemma is if I should get another amarok (or some other high spec HB) for standard tuning or a Solar just to support Ola.

Case in point: i have had my les paul for a few years now, absolutely love it BUT it had an issue with the copper shielding and bad wires so the guitar made a nasty noise all the time if i werent to be constantly touching the strings when it was plugged in. Eventually i got it fixed but it still feels weird that i had to buy new wires and shield the guitar so that it works properly. It should not be needed with such expensive instrument.

Never had any problems with Gibsons and tuning, and I've owned 3 SG's and 2 LP Studio's. But I always, always, always switch the tuners out as soon as I get them to Grover keystone tuners. Not because of tuning issues with the original cheap "Gibson Deluxe" Klusons, but due to the fact that the Klusons will break if you so much as bump them. Not to mention they look cheap with those plastic knobs. Never had the Klusons on any Gibson for more than the first couple of weeks I own it. Maybe that's why I never noticed any tuning issues.
I'm stuck on Gibson and Fender, but it's mostly due to the tone and feel. I just can't seem to get the tone and feel I want any other way. Especially when it comes to the old mahogany-set-neck-short-scale-archtop-based design. There's a color in the tone of a Gibson that just doesn't seem to exist in other brands. But many other brands ARE better guitars, in the measurable ways. One of the reasons I'm a Fender fan. Fenders are better guitars. They're just not Gibsons and they can't duplicate one. Makes me love and hate Gibson, all at the same time.

    • @MickH60
      @MickH60 2 года назад

"I'm stuck on Gibson and Fender, but it's mostly due to the tone and feel". That's one of the more naive things I've read here. There are that many manufacturers that make mahogany guitars or LP copies, that exhibit the very same qualities or better, I suspect you just want the name. My Japanese vintage Les Pauls have superior build quality, exhibit the same qualities and are built form better quality wood, the long tenon neck joints in my guitars put Gibsons neck joints to shame. The ONLY differences is usually pickups, which can be easily changed. The "tone" thing is a fallacy, If I put the same pickups in my LP's that are in your Gibson, they will sound exactly the same. Also, there is NOTHING wrong with the Klusons, I've NEVER broken one and have them on 3 of my Les Pauls, {used klusons on a lot of guitars since the late 70's}, the tuning stability problems on LP's comes from the string angle between the nut and tuners, The strings catch in the nut, that's not my opinion, its a fact.... You can't compare Fender to Gibson, completely different guitars in every way...

    • @waltjames407
      @waltjames407 2 года назад +1

@@MickH60 Naive? I've been playing for 40 years, my friend. Professional player for 34 years. Instructor for 20 years. Gibsons have something that the other brands I've tried simply do not. And it has little to do with build quality or how good it stays in tune (pretty good, in my experience, although Fenders are better at it). It's the personality of the guitar. How does it feel to play it? And my ears tell me that Gibsons (especially SGs) have a woody-cartoony color/sloppiness to the tone that I just do not hear in similar designs. "That Joe Walsh sound" is how I like to describe it. I just happen to like Gibsons more than the other brands using that mahogany-set-neck-short scale archtop based design. And so do many, many others, in spite of their flaws. They do the job, they've always worked for me in the studio tuning-wise, where tuning stability is an absolute must. If it weren't for reports from the field, I'd think Gibsons were just as good as any other good guitar at staying in tune. I didn't know about Gibson tuning issues until I saw Glenn's videos and a few others. So there is no need to lecture on those issues, as I am well aware of them and why they happen. My biggest issue with Gibsons is probably the shapes (the SG is the only comfortable one, IMO), and the fact that the low E saddle quite often won't adjust back far enough to intonate that string properly. And the general attitude of the company's upper management.
I never doubted the fact that some manufacturers make guitars that are better in measurable ways. This is not a measurable way. It is totally based on how it feels to play the instrument. You can't measure that like you can measure tuning stability or number and magnitude of cosmetic boo-boos. Sorry you feel the need to insult someone over their taste. Fricker is much better at expressing the issues with Gibsons, which I never denied were the case. Although I have questioned the tuning issue, as I've never experienced it in over 40 years and 5 Gibsons I've owned. But who knows, 5 is a small sample size, and a recording engineer probably has worked with more than 5. And I use 10s in standard 99.9% of the time. I would not touch a short scale guitar for any drop tunings, which I'd suspect is something that Glenn has to deal with frequently. Of course that Schecter is going to be better for that. Short scale gets dramatically worse on tuning stability the lower you go. That's why basses have long necks and bridges all the way back.
Kluson "Gibson Deluxe" tuners are crap quality and break too easily. I broke 2 of them within a couple of weeks of each other, way back in the early 90s. Both caused by bumps at gigs. First time was a strap lock failure, second time it got knocked over on a stand. I've changed out the Klusons to Grover keystones ever since and won't keep Klusons on a Gibson for more than I can stand it. I've bumped my tuners many times since, and never once a broken tuner. Again, there are many, many players who do the exact same thing, for the exact same reason. Replace flimsy, ugly tuners with tough, shiny ones. But hey, if you like that cheap plastic look and want to risk having to replace tuners with every gig, have at it.
Gibson is the Harley-Davidson of guitar. Not necessarily the best design, but there's a vibe, personality and feel there that I have yet to experience in any other guitars made using the mahogany-set-neck-short-scale archtop-based design.
And yes I can compare Fender to Gibson. I can, and I do, all the time, every day. I would love to have a favorite...so I pit them against each other constantly. They are both solid-body electric guitars with more crossover versatility than people are willing to admit. Especially in the case of using a Fender for what you'd expect someone to use a Gibson for. Fenders totally beat Gibsons on versatility. You can get metal on a SSS strat if you know what you're doing, but a Gibson is probably better. Unless you're drop-tuned, in which case I'd go for something more modern, but that's not my thing. I'm an old-school rock guy. If you compare an electric to an acoustic, you might have a point on them being totally different. Even though they're not *totally* different. Learn to play one, automatically know how to play the other.

I thought it was funny that when Gibson would give Alvin Lee an ES335 (may he Rest In Peace), he would immediately remove the pickup covers, flip the humbuckers upside-down, and frequently cut a place in the guitar and wire in a Stratocaster pickup. It must be nice to be given guitars. My Schecter, which is similar to a Les Paul, has a neck through rather than a set neck, and Dimarzio pickups, which are very good. It also has coil tapping. I prefer neck-through; my old RIC 4001 had that as well.

I'm really in love with the Gibson 335 look and sound. But as a bit of a beginner (on my 9th week of playing), I'm debating between a Gretsch 2622 Streamliner, and A Harley Benton HB 35. Both sound phenomenal! What I love about the HB, is that I can buy several of them to play, and then double as very attractive wall decor :-) I have to make a general observation about guitar prices though. I have 30+ years of flute and saxophone experience, and teach both. If you want to buy a top end professional saxophone, you are looking at around €5k-6k... For a good professional flute you will have to drain your bank account by around €20k to get taken seriously by an orchestra. This makes even Gibson look inexpensive! I'm really enjoying getting to know the guitar community.

Youll be alright with either. Maybe take a Gretcsh, just because of better quality control and better pick ups (its a good brand with good reputation). Electric guitars arent like classical instruments really...most if it comes down to how you feel the guitar and your amp, speaker...thats basically it. You can buy a 100€ electric guitar, set it up and itll sound great on a good amp...later you can change things on it if you want.
With guitars, you pay a lot for the name rather than quality...around 1000€ mark, basically any guitar is the same in terms of quality...some companies just overprice their instruments bcoz of the brand name.

I’ve played Gibsons and Fenders since I was a kid (40 years now). They are all familiar to me and as a gigging guitar player, I need things to be familiar and easy. I’ve bought most of my Gibson’s 20+ years ago when they were super cheap and plentiful. I used to mainly own SG’s in the 80’s because they were usually $200 (believe it or not they were cheaper than Squires). They were just always around and they were always somewhat affordable, a way different story these days. It takes a while to set them up correctly to play grate, but when you do get them set up properly, they are unbeatable. I play them because I’m familiar with them and they are trustworthy. And I’ve never broken a neck on a Gibson even when accidentally slammed them down headstock first. I’ve played great import models and own a few, but I don’t reach for them as much as I do my old Gibsons and Fenders. Some of us old people are just accustom to them. My two Les Paul customs from the 70s that I play almost every time I gig are definitely not pretty, but I always get compliments on my tone when I use them. Watch old punk rock videos from the 80s. Look at the guitars they were playing because those you could get for practically nothing. They are all super expensive these days.

I remember before I first started playing guitar, I repaired a broken bass and playing it gave me the confidence to try and learn guitar, watched several videos just to learn as much about guitars as possible before I committed to a purchase.
Came across a certain guitar channel, noticed they basically ONLY talk about Gibsons for whatever reason, and I remember a comment under the video like "Every guitar brand has qc issues, it's stupid to expect anything different, and most people's will never hold a guitar in this price range so they just don't know the real quality"
And honestly though I felt like most of that was BS, the last part stuck with me, how would I know if a guitar wasn't actually worth it if I could never realistically spend time with a guitar.
I bought a IYV LP copy for a 110$, was pretty impressed by how easy it was to play, fixed up a broken Silvertone strat copy, the neck pickup and profile sounded and felt great, and then it happened.
    I inherited a Gibson L-50.
It played and sounded and felt great... about as great as those 100$ and junk guitars...
    They're literally just instruments.

GLEEEEEN!!! Over the years, I have walked into a music store three times fully decided to buy a Gibson SG but after trying several different ones, all three times ended up leaving the store with a much better playing and sounding instrument for a fraction of the price. What did I buy instead? 1) a Cort SG (Greg Bennet era) at literally A TENTH of the Gibsons price at the time, 2) a Godin artisan tc, for about 20% of sg cost and, 3) an Squier Jazzmaster also for about 20%, the p 90s on this last one made the gibsons p 90s sound like cardboard in comparison. Gigged the hell out of those for years with no issues other than the occasional nasty look from some Brand loyalty snob, until they heard the sound that is! Buy whatever you fancy my friends but something that has worked very well for me. is buying with my ears! Cheers!! and FUCK YOU GLENN!!

I have a Gibson LP Standard. I didn't have tuning issues when I got it but took it to my tech expecting him to want to work on the nut or even replace it. He said it was actually cut from the factory really nice. Since then, I've popped a bigsby in it, threw on some 9.5 gauge strings and... I still don't have tuning issues. 🤷‍♂️

Don't trust a middle age guy in ponytail and cammo shorts: he's just trying to push the new guitar he got for free and using division to attract views.

Gibsons were the industry standard once upon a time, but these days there are a lot of good guitars coming from factories overseas. Nowadays you can buy a very cheap guitar, replace the pickups and give it a proper setup, and you'll have something that easily rivals Gibson quality for a fraction of the price.

Let me start by saying I'm a huge Gibson fan:
This is fucking gold. Gibson's quality has gone down the drain lately. Great job, Glenn! Hilarious!
Also, I will continue to play Gibson despite the problems they may have!

Exactly, but I will always stay with second hand gibsons. No person in their right mind buys a new Gibson, but second hand you can get something half the price that’s indistinguishable quality.

I agree with you but lately its gotten better. Just bought a new standard LP and its perfect. And dare i say it was setup almost perfect. I know Gibson has had quality issues but I took a chance and it worked out. Then I looked into it and saw that the majority of people are happy. I bought a Les Paul in 2015 and it was not good.

I own an SG. Bought it in the 90s. Not going to apologize. I like that it's not heavy. That being said, I also have an Epiphone LP, and the neck feels exactly the same to me.
