      Bill was great during the show talking about our infection of Political Correctness & Censorship. The discussion topics did not lend themselves to comedic quips, but I hope Maher has him back.

      I love Bill Burr. *_"You won't do worse than me, so have at it..."_* Everything he says gets the biggest laugh from the audience. And laughs are often a sign that people recognize _honesty_. That's why I love comedy; it's an art form that _cannot work_ without 100% brutal honesty....even when it's a small trivial joke like the one Burr said to Dean. Still....comedy is THE last bastion of honest free speech that exists. That's why it's so incredibly important.

      Duc Tran "The Allied bombing campaign was one of the main factors which influenced the Japanese government's decision to surrender in mid-August 1945." Don't forget that the Soviets were starting to move on Japan(after the US did all the work). So even if I don't wholeheartedly agree of nuking cities, but the fact still stands, that Japan is currently one of the most successful countries along with Germany(also bombed by the US). Does it mean that I think that bombing solves everything? No. I was just objecting to the statement that "Bombing never solves anything for long, it just creates destruction and animosity." which the examples of Japan and Germany clearly show.

    • @Redhotlugnut
      @Redhotlugnut 9 лет назад +3

      Superman13195 Do you not think Bill Maher has a machine behind him putting together the topics and the argument for the others to debate? I was at that taping and I have to say that even though Bret Stephens was outnumbered badly, he held his own and argued his topics very well. I know they had a 'rehearsal' before the taping so I'm not sure as to how much these guys know about what will be discussed on the show. I do know that since it's Maher's show, he's going to come in very prepared on each and every topic that is raised. That lady barely said anything the entire show and Dean sounded pathetic backing down to Maher not once but twice during the show. Dean is a smart guy too. Stephens didn't back down once, Burr when off camera was leaning back not knowing what to say. I felt bad that there were so many topics he wasn't really able to contribute to.

    Hey, I'm a Democrat, but I've got to say, it should be really hard for Republicans to come on Real Time. They have the audience, the panel and the host against them. You at least have got to give it to them that they have the balls to sit and take so much shit without support.

So they are absolutely convinced they just GOTTA go on Real Time, and set dem "librals" straight! However, almost every time, once they get there, they proceed to demonstrate why their entire ideology, meaning, their logic, convictions, facts, positions, and arguments, are always so full of giant holes, and on nearly every subject too! Thing is NO ONE can EVER get 'em to see it!!

      Lol, Bill Maher regularly lets his Conservative guest get their say without shouting them down ala O'Reilly, Hannity, etc. He lets someone from the panel rebut the arguments but in this case, Dean was a bore and so was the lady. Just watch him with Ann Coulter, he just laughs her off, as she should be.
      The only time he doesn't smirk and shake his head is when a topic is about religion, especially Islam.

    • @sanzuriver2959
      @sanzuriver2959 9 лет назад +15

      Pwned? Yes. But I am sorry, Bret Stephens is the type of person who "wins" by using his intelligence and education to dismantle arguments, which usually is a good thing if done honestly.
      Here is what he did on the show:
      1. Using obscure history without providing context in order to appear informed and to make it impossible for others to form counter arguments. (AKA Smart Lying)
      2. Using a few exception to prove 'See, he is not so perfect, so I win you lose'.
      3. He retreated into 'Well no one knows' when faced with something he did not prepare beforehand.
      4. Pretend someone's counter argument is changing the topic when it really isn't and use subtle strawman to discredit counter arguments without providing anything of substance on his end.
      He would makes a great political operative, but only as a hyper-partisan one.
      I'd almost think he got ridiculed for his ideology as a teenager and then spent his life trying to get revenge by tirelessly researching every loophole he can find so he would not lose the argument even if he cannot defend his ideology. Hence you never see him try to voice why he is correct, he is only attacking the opposition to appear correct by default. Smart but also idiotic.

    • @636davidp

      Rush P. I agree. Of course, Bret would have brought up the common right wing talking point that Democrats had a super-majority.

    I notice a lot of people are saying that Bill Maher got "owned" by Bret Stephan's but I think it's just a misunderstanding. While Bret made respectable points, just because Maher doesn't retort doesn't mean he was stumped or left speechless like some people have commented. Bill is simply giving Bret the last word and moving on. This happens a lot during his show and, if you don't know any better, it really does look like Maher has conceded and doesn't know what to say but he's simply just being a good host and giving his guest the final word. Maher has to manage time as his producers are constantly reminding him it's a live show. So I'm not trying to discredit Bret Stephan's views but please don't think Maher couldn't respond to most of his points.

    • @GrahamCStrouse
      @GrahamCStrouse 9 лет назад +2

      Bill didn't get owned. He let Bret talk because when it comes to the subject of Islamic terrorism he largely agrees with him.

    • @mjd121
      @mjd121 9 лет назад +4

      Bret Stephens from the WSJ was very impressive last night. The reason that Howard Dean and Nia Henderson had nothing to say is because they knew they weren't in Bret Stephens league. Dean and Nia's arguments are based on opinion and political talking points - they rarely have any facts. Bret is clearly well informed and has a grasp of the facts.... His points about global warming and settled science is a classic.... just because all these climate scientists proclaim there is man made global warming based on consensus is not fact based science. there was wide consensus in the past that the earth was flat and that the Sun rotated around the planet earth - but that consensus did not make it a fact. .

    • @dougholmes1627
      @dougholmes1627 9 лет назад +3

      I'm not so sure. I think his body language demonstrates the exact opposite. He doesn't have the right response, but he knows the information is out there somewhere to refute it, he just doesn't have it on hand. That's why in a couple of weeks he will bring up the exact topic and refute it.

    • @nerzenjaeger
      @nerzenjaeger 9 лет назад +2

      mjd121 Of all the conservative guests in the last years Bret sure was one of the better informed ones. However... like Bill said: Galileo worked against religion, not science. So your flat earth argument falls, you know, flat. In the grand scheme of things, sure, specific science is valid as long as there is a better theory to explain something. But to some degree, if a vast majority of experts agrees on something as crucial as the environment, we should actually act upon that. You wouldn't listen to the single guy saying your house is fire proof if 49 other architects tell you it isn't. Also: there is no such thing as 100% certainty in science.

    • @636davidp
      @636davidp 9 лет назад +4

      Bill couldn't respond to Bret during the show because Bret was just making some stuff up. For example, Bret said a bunch of Nobel prize winning scientists ranked climate change low in priority among things we could combat. Bill never heard of that because it didn't happen. Some economist did that, not scientist. And, it was a poor argument anyway filled with false assumptions and false choices.
      Bret also lied about a 1935 and 1975 "consensus". Just because Newsweek did a story on global cooling, it does not mean there was a scientific consensus. In fact, there wasn't. The writer of the Newsweek piece has said the climate change deniers are wrong for using his article as an example. You could tell that Bill didn't want to rehash that old debunked argument again on his show.

    The Washington post guy made every point clearly and well thought out. I'm a bit of a left winger but it is refreshing to see a Republican argue and debate smartly. He never said anything stupid like "its called leadership" as if that's an actual argument. Smart and informed intellect. As a Democrat I say we need smart Republicans and writers like that. Its a two party system and I want our Republicans in there fighting for what they believe. We need them too. That guy said smarter stuff in one hour then anything ever uttered at Fox or Clear channel ever.

    I enjoy the show but why invite just one conservative to be badly outnumbered by the rest? Btw Stephens is brilliant.

    Even Bill Maher, who has always shown that he is a strong supporter of Israel, is starting to see the big picture. You can tell that as a liberal, he cannot except that so much influence on US policy is exerted by a foreign country, even if that country is an ally. When a majority republican congress has more respect to the leader of a foreign nation then its own president, something needs to change. The founding fathers must be rolling in their graves.

    4:43 Howard Dean: "...I don't believe in doing what they want us to do."
    What if they wanted you to call them thugs and terrorists? Would you then refuse to call them that? Dean's argument is weak.

    I don't necessarily agree with everything Bret Stephens says, but that man can debate with the best of 'em. I wish I was as articulate and charismatic as he has presented himself to be time and time again.

    I don't get the constant deflection back to Bush. I didn't understand it in 2009 and it makes even less sense now. Is this just Maher's way of expressing buyer's remorse after donating so much to the president's campaign? Bush and Obama are not comparable for the mere fact that one is president currently and one is not. Bush was his predecessor, not his competitor. That's before I ask why criticizing this administration automatically puts you in the pro Bush camp.
