    Frank makes total sense here. An anti-government stance doesn't produce no government it produces bad government.

    • @OperationBaboon
      @OperationBaboon 10 лет назад +15

      is is also not the government that you need to fight against or protect yourself against, but an overreaching government. like the one created by bush and cheney... homeland security and the dissolve of liberty. that is what franklin has warned you about, not that the government might make safety regulations and controlling businesses, holding people accountable etc.

      @Qermaq 10 лет назад +1

      OperationBaboon The Founding Fathers designed government to be slow enough that it cannot do much harm. We don't want an efficient government. We want an inefficient one. That way we can keep pace with the bullshit. A government that seeks power is anathema to society.

    • @OperationBaboon
      @OperationBaboon 10 лет назад +6

      that is complete nonsense. they designed the government based on standards of their time. they also made clear that the rules need to change as time changes. an efficient government is what makes a country successful. the bullshit is a cultural thing other countries do not have - at least not in such high amounts.

    A little correction here maybe. I'm from Germany and noticed some disinformation when Bill Maher accused Germany of receiving military aid from the United States. In fact, however, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany back then) received financial aid from the US as part of the Marshall Plan. 1.4 billion US$ whitch is the equivalent of 11% of the total amount spent by the US after the Act's implementation in 1948. As far as the Marshall plan is concered, it's been a credit given to Germany at that time which after the London Debts Agreement of 1953 was payed back plus intrest rates.
    A quick look at today's budget of Germany reveals that all military expenses are payed for exclusively by Germany itself. Germany at least since 1953 does not constitute a recipient of external financial aid.
    Sorry for bothering you...

    I'm glad about the segment about CA water usage. I was very disappointed neither Bill nor Jay mentioned the largest user of water: the meat and dairy industry. It takes many, many times more water to grow a pound of meat versus a pound of plant protein. It's a huge waste of resources and a huge source of pollution (more CO2 than all the cars on Earth).

    • @neosoontoretro
      @neosoontoretro 10 лет назад +2

      Loping Camshaft Yeah, it's not the like meat and dairy about the food pyramid or anything.

    • @LysergikFuneral
      @LysergikFuneral 10 лет назад +2

      neosoontoretro Firstly, the food pyramid is an outdated concept. MyPlate is what the USDA uses as a guide now and it doesn't mention meat or dairy. Secondly, we don't need to rely on meat and dairy (especially as a rich country). That's my point, it's unnecessary and wasteful.

    • @neosoontoretro
      @neosoontoretro 10 лет назад +4

      Loping Camshaft Actually, it's not an outdated concept. A Healthy Eating Pyramid has been developed the Harvard School of Public Health, Department of Nutrition. So you're completely wrong, the food pyramid is still relevant. And yes, meat and dairy is necessary for the human body as many nutritionists would agree. Being a rich country has nothing to do with nutrition, the reason poor countries are suffering is because they don't have what we take for granted. Simply claiming that it's unnecessary and wasteful doesn't make it so.

    • @LysergikFuneral
      @LysergikFuneral 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Nah, there's no fight. Most people just don't realize these things, it isn't something that we hear much about. I didn't until a few years ago while reading on my own. Never any mention of it in ecology, geology, or environmental classes in college.

    • @mckenzie.latham91
      @mckenzie.latham91 10 лет назад

      neosoontoretro
      To be honest a lot of poor countries are suffering because they don't have what we take, which is why in countless places world wide the farming and food industries sell everything to the western nations to the point they leave their own people with barley anything.
      Some meat and dairy is necessary, nothing to the limits or the extreme the industries push them to, in fact it can get quite wasteful and lead to other health concerns. Whats more important is the nutrients gained from meat and dairy, so nutrients like calcium, iron, and protien, all of which can be found in other products so massive amounts of meat and dairy are not actually required.
      the cattle industry leads to quite a bit of pollution, it leads to habitat destruction, the cramped spaces and constant use of antibiotics to deal with sickness and issues created from stuffing cattle with corn grain feed which hurts their stomachs but makes them fatter and more tender can actually lead to anti biotic resistant diseases and sources of ecol i etc. the system is not perfect and has some serious issues that we could address, not too mention the fact that many people project that if we were to use the same amount of land we do for cattle with plant/grain we could easily feed most people on the planet.
      There are issues with that too but i just want to make clear we neither have to eliminate not heavily rely on meat/dairy in our daily diets. The problem boils down to what it sadly always does with mankind, it won;t happen becasue the industries in question don;t want to lose money, even to the detriemnt of the species/planet not making the bottom line is the biggest concern, which is why the only way things will change is if we the people demand it.

    • @HeligoLandia
      @HeligoLandia 10 лет назад +2

      Matt Schwartz exactly, don't you think its a little thick to suggest that NOW AMERICA can decide that Germany and Japan are no longer warwongers who can't be trusted when america is the main wardriver on the planet for over fucking 60 years? He as an american should beg for forgivness and keep his mouth shut about any other countries.

    • @HeligoLandia
      @HeligoLandia 10 лет назад +1

      Matt Schwartz he was not being facetious at all when he said that Germany and Japan are no longer threats and he is no longer worrying about them. He was unironically saying that. To make the point that america can withdraw its troops from Germany because america can trust them now and doesnt need to defend them anymore (which is of course not at all what america is doing but that's another point).

    • @HeligoLandia
      @HeligoLandia 10 лет назад +3

      Matt Schwartz You want to claim he was being facetious because you know how arrogant it is but he wasn't. 4:00 there is nothing facetious about that statement.

    • @HeligoLandia
      @HeligoLandia 10 лет назад

      Matt Schwartz I'm not missing any subtle sarcasm i'm well aware what point he was making and its fucking arrogant and ignorant at the same time. Not to mention that Maher's point, with which he agreed, that america is defending the EU is ridiculous to begin with and oozes american ignorance. Why can't you have the humility to recognize that some communication cues that clearly demonstrate arrogance may be beyond your perception as an american but will be noticeable to foreigners?

    • @HeligoLandia
      @HeligoLandia 10 лет назад +1

      Matt Schwartz His point was the cutting back on military spending. And while he made that point he was being a typical arrogant and ignorant american. And why would you withdraw the troops from germany if Russia is supposedly such a big threat and Germany is such a big ally? America is responsable for the situation in the Ukraine in the first place by installing a fascist government.

      Islam is the same. You look at their Mufti's and Clerics and some have the same open message: Death to the west, Death to Israel, Curse the Jews, Glory to Islam. • @WithoutRemorse12

      Still sounds racist and ignorant. If Government is Just and accountable to all the people within its nation then their no real problem with being or becoming a minority.

    • @jamesjefferson9228
      @jamesjefferson9228 10 лет назад +2

      Racist or not, it's not about economics. And it's not racist for a nation of people to want self-determination. There's nothing wrong with French wanting to keep France French, just as there's nothing wrong with the Thai wanting to keep Thailand Thai. It doesn't mean French think their better than the Thai or vice versa; they just each want to maintain their own nation.

    • @lancebates
      @lancebates 10 лет назад

      James Jefferson While I understand your point, I think Native Americans, most African countries, and Australians would have liked to maintain their own nations as well in the past. At least most countries of the world today have the chance figure out immigration issues through political means, instead of someone holding a gun to their head and telling them to move or die.
      But to Mr. Frank's point, immigration is, and always has been(all over the world), somewhat about economics. A large majority of poor people in the US don't dislike immigrants because of their skin color or culture. I mean hell, look at how many poor white southerners chow down on Mexican and Asian food. They dislike the fact that more people entering the country means less job opportunities for the citizens already here in the US and more people potentially unjustly receiving benefits.

    • @WithoutRemorse12
      @WithoutRemorse12 10 лет назад

      James Jefferson Immigration is about getting access to better opportunities. A lot of countries around World are Corrupt and Undeveloped due to CIA coups or Corrupt American Trade Deals. Instead of empowering other third world economies abroad. America Corporations exploits them for Labor and Resources.

    • @jamesjefferson9228
      @jamesjefferson9228 10 лет назад

      Lance Bates
      I don't know what your point is in the first paragraph. Our ancestor's destruction of the natives, as horrible as it is, does not mean we have any less right to maintain our nation. Indeed, we have, and only have, that right to the extent that we assert and fight for that right. We only loose the right if we give up the right. This is called "might makes right." Further, letting in non-American-natives (e.g., Mexicans) doesn't do anything for the Native Americans.
      Economics is a factor (especially when considering natives' stake in the welfare state), but culture may be an even bigger factor. I think Americans would react less negatively to an influx of Canadians and British than the current influx of Mexicans. That's natural: we generally share language, history, customs etc. And this is even more true in the case Frank is talking about: European's anti-Muslim sentiments. I don't think I need to discuss why Europeans might have negative feelings towards Muslims, and the reasons aren't economic.

    Noticeably absent from today's show any discussion of the Obama administration's reaction to Bergdahl being charged with desertion; a comment from Bloomberg story 'Bergdahl's Defense Is He Was Planning to Come Back': Bergdahl and his attorney must think that the military justice system only has morons working in it. Bergdahl's email communications to his family and his own plan to desert his team made no mention of any misconduct or wrong-doing. Besides, Bergdahl knew full and well that he does not have to walk away into the unknown to report anything. All he had to do is make a phone call and his report would have been taken by the appropriate authority. Bergdahl could fool Obama, but he's not going to make a fool of the military justice system. He must be tried for desertion and that's the only way justice can be served. www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-03-27/bergdahl-lawyer-says-he-was-awol-not-a-deserter

      There's certainly waste, but the core function of a state is to defend the nation. Either way, defense spending is nothing compared to the big social programs.

    • @lancebates
      @lancebates 10 лет назад +1

      Inefficient spending is inefficient spending, it doesn't matter whether it's from the military or SS/health care. All of them need to be handled more efficiently. However, I would say Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid have done an almost incalculable amount more to help normal Americans over the last 70 years than the military. We absolutely should spend enough to keep the bad guys off American soil and protect our allies, but we also owe it to our citizens to provide them with sufficient funds for their well being, especially the sick and elderly.

    • @jamesjefferson9228
      @jamesjefferson9228 10 лет назад

      Well, just as you say one thing, I say another: the social programs have not helped us; they're bankrupting us. I'd rather see individual retirement accounts and a free market health market system (e.g., no state boundaries for health insurance), combined with state and local subsidies and charities (made permissible by a freer and more prosperous people) to help the most needy among us. Government will always be inefficient and corrupt; that's what it does best. And that's why we should ask government, especially the federal government, to do as little as possible. Federal defense is essential, that's why it's enumerated in the Constitution as a power of Congress. Pensions and healthcare are not essential federal functions, and should not be the functions of any government in my opinion.

    They (well, mostly S.e. Cupp) are quite wrong about the rise of Front National in France. Front National was on the rise already, and Charlie Hebdo was strongly against Front National. Just google for the cartoons they made about them. And Front National is anti-semetic, so the Jewish interest has nothing to do with the rise of the Front National.
    What Bill Maher is saying about Wilders is wrong. Maher thinks that Wilders is talking about religious extremism, that's what it seemed like in Religilous. But Wilders is against foreigners or people of foreign decent in general. The current mayor of Rotterdam shouldn't be allowed in politics according to Wilders because of his supposed 'double loyalty' because he has a double nationality (two passports, one Dutch, one Moroccan). He said the same about Nebahat Albayrak (Dutch-Turkish), who at the time was a minister. He had no problem with a member of the libertarian party who had a Swedish passport.
    During the elections Wilders was shouting "less, less, less" and made the audience follow him, about the amount of Moroccans in the cities. So where he first talked about being against Islam and not moslims, he came back from that. The German press compared him with Eichmann for that.
    During the latest provincial elections, Wilders made a difference between real Dutch people and Dutch People of foreign decent, which he simply called 'foreigners'. Something me made clear years earlier by saying that he's a member of parliament for 'Henk and Ingrid and not for Mohammed and Fatima'.
    Over the last few years, a controversy has grown in the Netherlands about the look of a children's figure called 'zwarte piet' who basically looks like black face. Certain groups, who consist out of mostly black people have spoken out against it and suggested that we should change it. Wilders responded with 'bullshit, it's our culture, you don;t have a say in this, if you don't like it, leave'. So people with a different skincolor are not part of our culture and shouldn't have a say in it according to Wilders.
    There's a reason why over the last few years, more and more people have become easier about calling him a racist. And just to be clear; even though in the US there are certain little norms; to label a public person a racist takes way more than it does in the US. I mean, the Ta-Nehisi definition of racism doesn't mean squat in this.

    Barney Frank still scares the shit out of Republicans because he should be the model of how politics and working for the American people should be conducted. None of this 'My Way or the Highway' that you see coming from the Right. Frank is very smart and can relate with the working class. It's a damn shame we don't have more politicians like him in D.C. that actually are in touch with reality.

      The "leader" of Islam is dependent on which branch you're asking about.
      Ali Khamenei (Supreme Leader of Iran) is as close to a Pope as you can get, if you are a Shia Muslim. He's believed to be a direct descendant of the profit Mohammad.
      Sunni Muslims don't have the same type of religious leader. They have a Grand Mufti but there isn't just one. Mufti and Grand Mufti are titles given within a country. Maybe the most fitting answer here would be "The country of Saudi Arabia" or it's King.
      Here's a link to a map of Muslim areas that shows the division by sect:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shia_Islam#/media/File:Islam_by_country.svg
      Sunni and Shia have been fighting each other since Mohammad's Son-in-law and Cousin (same person) became recognized as Mohammad's successor to rule the Caliphate.

      @Illlium 10 лет назад +4

      Well, the Pope is only a leader for catholics, so you could ask who is the leader of christians as well. Islam just like christianity has many denominations so you don't get a universal leader for mutually exclusive concepts of salvation.

      mohamed. that was his unmoveable egoistic legacy. it is what gives islam more weight towards fundamentalism. infallible, unquestionable and the last prophet. the only one that matters. and that is the real problem of that particular branch of christianity. not that others are less rigid, but it is a premeditated cultural cul de sac as the situation clearly shows.

    With respect to Barney Frank, I do have to wonder why the United States has to be the strongest nation in the world. Why can't all nations be equally as strong?
    It seems like military dominance by any nation is the greatest provocateur for war and conflict. If all nations were equally as strong, any one might be more wary about attacking anyone else.

    • @lancebates
      @lancebates 10 лет назад +1

      It's not so much that the US has to stay the strongest, but it helps American citizens feel better knowing that it is, because they feel a lot of countries would consider taking advantage of any weakness. At this point the military is a financial and political tool more so than an actual attacking or defense force. Not to say the US Military isn't great at attacking and defending, but rather their use carries much more significance that just accomplishing one of those tasks.

    • @OperationBaboon
      @OperationBaboon 10 лет назад

      Lance Bates and thus the usa spends more money on military than the next 5 big nations combined. you know how many countries have jet carriers? only one and then it's like seven or so... if the usa would spend only half of its military budget on internal things, it would still be the biggest military power by a long shot and could solve a whole lot of problems it has. but there is the thing - barney mentioned it - financial disparity is causing the right to get more aggressive and that helps the conservatives. and since that crowd is the slowest to catch up on that fact, they help those people who cause most of their misery... how ironic.

    • @maeburekaiser
      @maeburekaiser 10 лет назад +2

      Michael Gibb That's not true at all. That balance was the case leading up to World War One. Each side just figured their strategy would prevail.

    • @Ngamotu83
      @Ngamotu83 10 лет назад +1

      maeburekaiser World War I was a bit more complex than that. It was preceded by several centuries of war between opposing empires. It wasn't ignited by any one of those empires either, but instead by separatists within Austro-Hungary hoping to gain independence for their region.
      Europe was an unstable region dominated by several large and powerful empires. It was hardly a stable region of equals.

    • @maeburekaiser
      @maeburekaiser 10 лет назад +1

      Michael Gibb First: I'm not saying it was simple. My point about each nation believing their strategies would win was in reference to why they would go to war when none of them had the power advantage.
      Second: That may have been the excuse used for each power to go to war, but it was hardly the reason for it (the separatists). As you said, it was much more complex than that.
      Third: The fact that it was an unstable region dominated by several large and powerful empires just goes to my point; there was no one single dominating power in Europe at the time, and yet each had their own expansionist goals. All those power bases did little, if anything to deter the governments from taking advantage of a political situation in order to grab for real estate.

    • @einundsiebenziger5488
      @einundsiebenziger5488 10 месяцев назад

      Of course you need to fund your military, but not in this insanely large scale. Aircraft carriers for example are not defense weapons, they are for show of force and to attack. You could cut the US denfense budget in half and the country would still be capable of defending itself. And if you used the other hald to fund free education and health care, it would likely turn Americans into the healthiest and smartest people in the world which probably would scare off more enemies than any nuke.
