    I love listening to Fran Lebowitz,not because I agree with her on every topic(I don’t),but because she gives her honest opinion,not a watered down version meant to appease the listener.The problem with most politicians and commentators is they are more concerned with being popular then with being honest.

    A gun isn't an 'equalizer' it's an 'escalator'. People who are 'trained' know this. It doesn't magically end an attack, it can arm your attacker, like a knife, or bat, or hammer, etc. A gun, on its own is just a weapon. A weapon is only equal to its operator.

    • @jesushatesyoutoo
      @jesushatesyoutoo 8 лет назад +2

      +Gabriela Jones Because Fran Leibowitz is smart enough to know that it is about winning. Bernie won't win the nomination and cannot win the general. She is smart enough to know that Bernie pushed the democratic nomination further left. The alternative is Trump. Who by the way is more liberal that the rest of the pack and yet is a fascist! Hillary is more qualified than ANY of the nominees including Sanders. Her policies you may not like, which are for the most part the SAME as Sanders but she IS the MOST qualified!

    General Hayden mentioned that the recidivism rate of released Guantanamo Bay prisoners is 30%, as if that "fact" justifies keeping it open. Firstly, the word recidivism refers to former convicted prisoners who return to criminal behavior after their release. If a person was never convicted in the first place, he is considered innocent, and can thus not be considered recidivist, even if he goes on to commit a crime in the future. Legally speaking, he would be a first time offender, not a recidivist. Secondly, what happened to the idea that it is better to let a hundred criminals walk free than to convict one innocent person, let alone imprison him without even bothering with a prosecution or conviction? How can the idea that 70% of un-convicted former prisoner do NOT offend after release be an argument for indefinite detention?

    I disagree with Dyson about Obama's race issues. He doesn't have a magic wand. And the REAL messages he's given have fallen on deaf ears. Watch his speech from the the launch of "My Brother's Keeper." It's about acknowledging hurdles but climbing over them via PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. That's not what people want to hear.

      +FungusMossGnosis look if you are his fan, then I am sorry if you offend you. But a man that just shouts out lines he like "Why don't we close Guantanamo!!!!" does belong in any debate. The only man that could challenge him with real hard data is Glenn Greenwald, the journalist that broke the NSA surveillance story.

    "There is a lot of idiots who do not know what they are doing with a gun..." Bill, I am sorry. Are you self-aware enough to say to yourself, "you know, maybe I shouldn't buy a gun because I am an idiot." No one believes they are an idiot. If they say they are an idiot, it is because they are smart enough to know just how much they don't know. I hate it when people say, "they just don't know how to use it and it is their fault when bad things happen." I believe in personal responsibility and taking responsibility, but you and I both know that the majority of people who walk into a gun store with the intent of buying a gun already believe they are smart enough to be able to use it correctly. And these people are the same ones who have a much greater chance of becoming a statistic. If I had my druthers, gun ownership would follow the same rules as car ownership. You have to take classes and prove you are responsible before you are allowed.

    Dear Bill Maher,
    Please have Michael Hayden on as often as possible! He had a lot of insightful thoughts and knowledge. Plus unlike a lot of the guests on the show who just like to hear themselves talk, he instead showed appreciation for other peoples view points and waited for them to finish (in a respectful way) and then said what he was thinking (instead of cutting them off mid-thought). I truly enjoyed your show a lot more this week!
    Thank you

    I think America 's so called moral authority (as referred to by Coles) lies more in having enlightened and modern military elites a represented here by this general, than the "public sphere" represented by the intellectuals on the table and the actor-activists. that was a good explanation of the legal framework of detainees as legitimate acts of war. I agree with the appreciation that this segment was better than the show.

    You lost me tonight bill, in your interview with the former NSA director you side with NSA and big brother over our constitutionally protected rights Apple is standing up for. Kudos to the former saying he sides with Apple. We need not give up Liberty for security more than we already have. That isn't people being spoiled that's people wanting their privacy. If we give up the things that made us America those who would harm us truly have won.

      I know, I cringed on that one. But alas, the only person we are in a 100% agreement with on all issues, is ourself, and for most people even that's a stretch.
      The one thing I do agree with though, is that it's a 'it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation.
      If the intelligence community doesn't pursue these things, then the first time we suffer a major terrorist attack, they're the ones most of the population wants to crucify.
      But when they do engage in these activities, then people are pissed over the country becoming a police state.
      Personally, I'm the type who would gladly trade a bit of security for privacy, because I'm of the opinion that bad shit is always gonna happen, and we can't protect ourselves from every little thing that MIGHT harm us. But a lot of people don't see it that way, and even worse....a lot more people want it both ways.

    • @brettperry3737
      @brettperry3737 8 лет назад +1

      I'd just like to add; there's also something to be said for the fact that the enemy we're fighting, is something the world has never really seen before, and thus there isn't a playbook on how to handle the challenges they present.
      Again, those things don't really matter to me all that much, and I'd prefer not to have our privacy violated regardless of the risk. But it's still something to think about.

      +The_Laughing_Man Dude seriously, you don't really understand the constitution, do you? That smartphone is evidence after a crime was committed. Imagine you were killed and recorded your murderer with your phone, do you think it an invasion of privacy for the police to search it for evidence? What about a notebook, if you just apprehended a serial killer, would his notebooks be an invasion of privacy for the police to pry, as well as his videos of the killings? It's fine to be skeptical of one's government, but it boggles the mind the fact that you are so, to the point of hysteria, against the government invading your privacy, yet you have no problems with large Multinational Cooperations, with no obvious supervision, having access to it. If the government is asking Apple for the key to get inside the Bernadino's terrorists smartphone, that means Apple has access to that information if it wants to. And I don't know about you but, little as it is, I'll put my trust in a Democratically elected Government before putting it on a large Multinational private company that owns sweatshops and employs child labor. Between the two, who'd you really wish to be the arbiters of justice in this case?
      Next time, you'll claim you don't want stop signs or stoplights, because they restrict your freedoms and liberties (and will obviously quote Benjamin Franklin). Yet, being the sheepple I am, I think that those are simple necessary tools that pragmatically help run every day life in modern society.

Maybe it's a few years too early for Bernie to win by a landslide but I'm going to do all I can too promote the idea that voting is a cool thing to do at every small election you are allowed to vote in.
