      Great Tutorial. I had the same problem and I searched for it online but unfortunately, I could not reach your video. So I tried to use Feviquick but after a minute, it again broke off. So, I closed it, just adjusting its position and I have applied tape from outside (in the plastic cover) so that the force from the hinges do not open up the case. Will that create any future issues because I am too afraid to open my laptop again, it was so horrifying for me. I was not even sure if the laptop will start again.

    If I may add, there’s a tensioner in the hinge that in the long use gets too tight that’s why the hinge turns hard and it’s puts stress on the screws until it breaks connection with the plastic case. Try to turn this tensioner a bit to lossen up but not too much that the screen doesn’t stand up on its own. Then you can firm up again the holding screws or as what the video suggest, put glue

    This is really helpful, thank you. It’s a fix we all feel should be good enough and something we can do, but we typically get nervous fooling with laptop electronics and all.
    I removed the back from my computer, and that’s all that was needed to access my broken hinge. The hinge broke off with the screws. The screen became unplugged so I inserted that, and positioned the laptop open in order for the hinge to rest flush and fully against the plastic casing.
    I used JB Weld since it was a metal to plastic contact, and I purchased the one with the highest PSI strength. This hinge needs to withstand a lot of force upon opening the top.
    As I type, the epoxy is curing. Crossing my fingers!!! 🤞🏼

    • @doribellan
      @doribellan 4 года назад +1

      So the jb weld did not stay. I tried it twice, and still no success. That joint needs to withstand a lot of torque and tension, especially when the laptop opens tightly like mine. I ended up finding c-brackets on amazon that have an opening of the width of my laptop when open at the hinge. When tight enough, a bracket holds the backing onto the rest of the laptop at the location of the hinge. Voila! This has worked better than anything else.

    There must be said that plastics degrade as manufacturers designed them to fail after some time, this means that all hinges will break eventually by means of stress, heat coming from the normal operation or just a fall or an unintentional blow. This procedure showed in the video might work but epoxy resin doesn't mix well with plastics and it was a poor quantity used here, I recommend drilling some holes through the plastics in order to the resin goes both sides from the bottom plastic and this creates a better grip. Cheers!

      yeaaah, its not like every plastic degrades over time. you litterly state the reasons plastic degrades in your comment, but then say the manufacturers do it on porpuse? when you buy a cheap laptop, then the plastic used is cheap aswell, but if you buy a good quality laptop its going to last. i have an old as plastik laptop, wich is still intact.

    What I like to do whenever I get a new laptop (if there are no warranty label or if hinges are accessible from the screen inside trim) is to ALWAYS loosen the hinge nut just slightly and put a cotton ear slab a tiny bit of runny oil (not dense one) just brush the slab upon the hinge. This will make your hinges last years without any modifications like the one in the video. However if you happen to have a broken hinge, make sure before doing the "FIX" in the video to place the original bolts and nuts, (the ones that are embedded in the plastic, most of the time they stay in the enclosure) remove old plastic, clean with some sandpaper to roughen up the surface of the enclosure so that the nuts will act as anchors in the epoxy and the epoxy will have enough grip on the sanded area.
    The other more brutal approach if you don't wanna mess with epoxy is to buy longer nuts, heat them with lighter then heat puncture the enclosure plastic, screw appropriate nut on the back. (make sure the nut is thinner than the rubber supports of the laptop, and your bolts are not too long, most of then you can cut with pliers easily)
    Hope I helped someone.

The melting plastic went everywhere underneath and now it looks like new and it´s super stable like a rock. Only downside is that you won´t be able to open it again, but I still can replace the RAM and the SSD. If the computer brakes internally, I would need to replace it anyway because it´s also very old; arround 12 years.

    It would be advisable to insert a piece of paper between the clamp and hinge in order to prevent the araldite gluing them together.

    Good work. Just wondering, how was the hinge anchored to the base originally? Was the two connected by nut and screw, instead of being glued?

    • @GeekyVicky
      @GeekyVicky  3 года назад

      Yes it was connected by nut and screw.

    Open the laptop screen by pulling it from the center. This way the force distributes to both the hinges. (Please don't open like the way you did as it gives more pressure on one hinge and you would break one hinge soon).

    • @GeekyVicky
      @GeekyVicky  3 года назад +5

      yes, a lot more depends on build quality though. I have macbook and its been 3 years no issue at all despite opening from the edges!

      Glue stick wont last. Once it breaks off, try with araldite

    After repairing the case, it's a good idea to repair the hinge too by lubricating the hinge barrel with a drop of oil and adjusting the the little bolt at the outside end of the hinge. The bolt can be clearly seen in the video.
    Wearing out of the lubricant in the hinge is the root cause of the failure, you're just deferring failure here,

      yeah i was thinking if that hinge was stiff enough to break the laptop housing, its only a matter of time before it rips the epoxy apart, or just breaks the plastic around the epoxy. it looked very difficult to open in the video.

    a tip,try to llosen up the nut on the hinge to create less resistance when opening or closing but not too much so its able to hold the screen in place

    After the repair, is it still possible to unscrew the hinges? After a laptop drop, I have to fix the hinges and this method will work. I also have to replace a broken power jack which is positioned right under the left hinge so I need to unscrew and lift the hinge to do it. I have ordered a new one but am waiting for it to arrive. The jack still works but you need to apply pressure to it for the connection to work. If I can't unscrew the hinge after the repair is done, I will have to wait and replace the jack first (and hope it never breaks again.) If I can unscrew it, I can make the hinge repair now and still use the laptop while I wait. Thanks!

    For people out here, if the hinge is already too hard.. spray some wd40 into both hinges. It solves the rusting issue and acts as a lubricant at the same time. Do not worry as WD40 are non conductive. Just don't spray it onto contacts and the board itself.
