I shouted the same "FINALLY!" when Matthew won that I did a few years back when Jon Hamm got his Emmy for Mad Men -- both on the last season of their series.
Finally!!!! No hate on Claire she’s fantastic but Keri’s been robbed of that Emmy since The Americans started. 6 seasons of great acting and not one Emmy for Russell, what in the world. And also the Best Drama for the show itself, what is wrong with these voters.
The academy gamed the membership and voting to shift the entire thing into wokeness. Buckle yourself in and get ready for at least a decade more of ultra-woke awards, where political agendas matter more than the arts. That's why a show that romanticizes Russian espionage had zero chance after the 2016 election.
Such a well deserved award, Matthew Rhys is great in everything he's in. From Brothers & Sisters, to The Americans, and Perry Mason. Absolutely owns every role
As everyone else has said: it's about time. He's deserved this for every single season of The Americans, but especially for this last season, and I'm so glad that he's finally been recognized. Philip Jennings has been one of my most favorite TV characters since the Pilot of The Americans aired, and it's because of his performance. So well deserved.
A great show that was soooo underrated for sooo long.. that he and Kerri Russell played those multiple personalities on each and every show.. Unbelievable skill !! Great writing, , intriguing, engaging.. I have loved it.
Finally. FIN-A-LLY. The Americans should've won more and Best Drama as well (I like GOT but let's be honest, they've won before and they'll have another chance in 2019).
GOT season 7 was not "Michael Phelps" form though. Aside from episodes 4 and 6, it was unremarkable. I'm not hating on the show like some do. I genuinely love it and am anxiously waiting for season 8. But The Americans was uniformly excellent last year and should've won. But no matter, I guess. It has a Peabody. And in some people's books, that's worth 10 Emmys. The Americans will be one of those shows that people will rediscover years from now in streaming and say "Where was I when this was on?!"
My point isn’t about who should get or shouldn’t get what. It’s about not judging something based on how many awards it’s gotten. I’m not gonna say Meryl Streep shouldn’t get another oscar because she already has a bunch if she was better than the rest of the category. That being said. GOT is the best show of all time. Lol
i can't fathom how long i've waited for this guy to win an award and be acknowledged properly! he is so damn talented...!! he has a gift when it comes to accents and i fell in love with his acting when i first saw him in 'Brothers and Sisters'! such a well-deserved win !!!
I just discovered The Americans (although I'd heard for years that it was really good). I binge-watched the first five seasons late at night and into the early morning while in London for a week. I didn't want to go to sleep it was THAT good! I had no idea! I then finished the series upon my return home. All I have to say is WOW!! What writing and acting - phenomenal. Both leads deserved the win, but I'm so happy Matthew got it. Phillip Jennings is by far one of the best characters ever written for television, and Matthew Rhys WAS that character; I'll miss seeing him line dance in cowboy boots! :) Bravo to him!
I did exactly what you did, binged nightly and could barely go to sleep. Just finished it yesterday morning at 4am here in New Zealand. Phenomenal series, and the acting was superb right across the board. Some of the supporting cast such were just flawless.
All the nominees deserved to win, but I'm glad he won since this was the last season of his show. Also, I relish any opportunity to hear his beautiful Welsh accent.
keri russell should have won too ...i mean come on she is KILIING it since season 1 and now that the series ended she can't even get rewarded 1 time !? so sad for her....i hoped also that the americans would win over GOT but at least i'm happy for Matthew
She did get the Television Critics Award this year and....well, I think she was so happy for Matthew; it felt almost as though it was for both of them. But they've both said making this show was the best experience of their professional lives. That's pretty great. The Americans would never get the audience size to win tons of awards. But that doesn't take away from it's incredible masterfulness.
I wish Keri had won also, but, when you think about it, Matthew's character was so emotionally torn. Keri's character was always only about the Mother land, the Center. Matthew really had two roles. He was torn about his homeland, but, he also liked the life here.
i didn't say Matthew didn't deserve it he was amazing ....but she also played very complicated character esp in the first seasons and then in the final season she played a whole other side of Elizabeth when she is like burned out when she decided to carry on while he was out of the spy life....she really gave a strong masterpiece performance of Elizabeth thro the whole series
+Bobo Poza I don't care for these awards and almost never think about them until they happen. Then I start to care about my "person/people/show" winning, which I find an unpleasant feeling. Nevertheless, if, in some alternate realm, I HAD to pick between Matthew and Keri...ugh, I hate even writing this, but I would choose Keri. Only by a hair and a hair that is very hard to define. But, I suppose, in the end, I feel like what she did in her role was even more nuanced and subtle than what Matthew did. So, if I'm reading you right, I agree with you: He certainly deserved it. But, if they were not going to both win, I'd have chosen Keri.
I wanted The Americans to win everything but if they only could win one it had to be Matthew for me. Disappointed for Keri but this win feels like it's for both of them.
I agree. Like you, I'm also disappointed about Keri - she's done incredible work on The Americans. But, also like you, if it had to be one of them, I'm glad it's Matthew. He was absolutely fantastic in this last season. I had a feeling he'd finally win because of his performance in that entire season, alone.
kushy9 Honestly, the finale just nailed it for me. That scene in the nomination clip gave me goosebumps. He was terrific and so was Keri. If one person had to win, I’m glad it’s him because if I had to choose between him and Keri, he would edge the win by the slimmest of margins.
I watch this every so often. He is one of the most deserving winners of all time. A lovely human being and a phenomenal performer. So grateful to get to watch him in every role he takes on.

Haha, privately I'd rail about it, but I'd never argue that for real. This turned into an essay. Didn't intend that.
Llevo esperando esto años y finalmente pasó: BRAVO POR MATTHEW, muy merecido!! La serie y Keri Russell han sido tan infravaloradas, me alegra tanto que por lo menos Matthew reciba el reconocimiento que The Americans se merece.
I think Hugh Laurie finally won an Emmy for the last season of House???? Kyle Chandler won for the first time for the last season of Friday Night Lights.
Didn't watch this year but had to check out if my Americans won last night. While I love Sterling and Milo to pieces, what Matthew was able to do with this character was superb. His strength and weaknesses and brokenness so openly displayed in every scene from season 1 to end! Watched him on Brothers and Sisters back in the day and loved him there too. Guess what I'm saying is gay Democrat or Russian Spy, I will be looking forward to any future project he does.
Just finished The Americans on STAR on Disney+. Fantastic show. Keri deserved an Emmy, and Best Drama. I just found out two days ago that he wasn't even American!
That moment when you watching 5th season of The Americans and just now realizing that Matthew Rhys is British)))) Good for him. He was always amazing on that show!
So many great acting talents on TV but sadly, most of them don’t get their recognition because they aren’t A-listers or considered ‘mainstream’ by Hollywood. I’m glad that Matthew finally got his well-deserved award. He should’ve gotten it for Brothers & Sisters back then but better late than never.
Omg, this is the fist time I’m hearing Mathew Rhys speaking apart from The Americans, and he sounds like a completely different person!! Goes to show what an amazing actor he is! 👏👏👏
Matthew Rhys deserves it. Deep subtle character, never flinching in danger, even when running. I kinda saw Peter Jennings in The Post too. Its in his blood.

Keri Russel, Matthew Rhys and The Americans itself have all for far too long been undermined by their lack of mainstream attention, despite critical acclaim. Really wish Keri won it too. She was sensational in the final season. Go watch The Americans, people!
Holy shit he's British!!!?? This award is way overdue, and now that I know that he has a strong British accent, it makes his acting even more impressive! You would NEVER know if you saw the show!
No such thing as a British accent. British is a term that includes several different cultural groups. English, Welsh, Scottish, Cornish, etc. Matthew is Welsh for example. Difference in America is they all subscribe to being American. That's not the case in Britain. Alot of Welsh and Scots don't consider themselves as British.
About time The Americans got the recognition they deserved. Far more deserving than the guys at This Is Us, The Americans was a brutally real story and This Is Us seems too over the top.
I was truly living under a rock it seems. I finished season 5 of the show and just came across this video and had no clue that they were a couple irl. When they kissed I was like What 😵? Feels good to see one of your favourite on screen couple be a couple irl. Just so pleasantly surprised. These two are ♥️
Although he isn't russian, regardless he did an amazing job pulling off as an American! Fooled me! As much as I love the british accent, 1st time I actually preferred the American one! So sexy. He is gorgeous regardless and such fine acting. Very much deserved
Haha, davy209. His American accent is virtually perfect. But if you ever watch again, you might notice there are times when he does a soft "a." That's not the linguistic term for it...I don't know what it's technically called. But it's like the "a" sound in "and" but in words where most Americans would use a flatter "a," like in "parent" or "can't." BUT, I would never have thought he was Welsh, or anywhere from The British Isles from that alone.....I just would have wondered why he said some words like that.
Let's be honest here, Matthew deserved that award from S01E01 and finally got some love for that amazing performance.
I agree and the show deserved recognition early on much more so then it did

So well deserved. I am so happy that The Americans finally got some love at the Emmy’s.

James House

I knew he was British, but was still very much surprised by the accent. I guess he was so good in The Americans and sold me on everything he's got.
I'm glad someone from The Americans won. More...no...ALL of them deserved to win.
Viva Matthew & Keri!
From Italy ❤!
lets go THE AMERICANS CRUSHED THEM ALL
FINALLY!!!!!! Long overdue!
LOve him!!!!! and Keri Is Stunning 💚💚💚💚💚💚
Very underrated show
Fair enough. Congrats to him🏆
I can't believe Irish or Wales or wherever he is from. Flawless American Accent.
I did not know he wasn’t American (no pun intended)
Haha, davy209. His American accent is virtually perfect. But if you ever watch again, you might notice there are times when he does a soft "a." That's not the linguistic term for it...I don't know what it's technically called. But it's like the "a" sound in "and" but in words where most Americans would use a flatter "a," like in "parent" or "can't." BUT, I would never have thought he was Welsh, or anywhere from The British Isles from that alone.....I just would have wondered why he said some words like that.
EVERY Brit, Aussie, and Welsh American accents are perfection.
I love the british accent but he did have the sexiest American accent. 1st time I'd prefer the American one. He is gorgeous regardless
I just ended season 2 of The Americans , I know it is good from the start but I didnt know they were a couple before.
Matthew Rhys, Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness and Keri Russell all in one video? Yeah, I've watched it three hundred times.
Now that is an acceptance speech.
Yeah Americans was a great show, he should have won a couple years ago
FINALLYYYYYY!!!! #theamericans #bestshowontelevision
