I swear, Joakim just likes to show up to random bands when they’re recording and ask if he can do a verse - I know he randomly showed up in a Grailknights song (Pumping Iron Power), and that band gives Gloryhammer a run for its money in terms of cheese

Not gonna lie, I really had to look that band and song up as I hadn't heard of them before. Granted, much like Gloryhammer, they are not quite my cup of tea, but the video very much made me laugh, so i am grateful for you telling me that this is actually a thing.

A few years ago, I didn't really intend to see an a capella band, but boy was I glad I had bought tickets for the main act when they had one as support act with them. The band was pretty much just 6 dudes from close to where I live who all have regular day jobs and do this just for fun and they looked really happy to have a chance to perform that evening. They were amazing and I'm not even kidding when I say that they kinda stole the show from the main act a little. It's really impressive to watch music like this live.
Bought their CD from their "merch shop" later and when this whole covid crap is over, I'd like to see them again.

One of my alltime favorite albums of them is "Tribe of force" ❤
I saw them live around '08/'09 on the SummerBreeze OA and me and my boyfriend (and probably the whole bunch of people who stood there out of curiosity as well) didn't really know what to expect, so we were highly impressed by their live show! One of the best new bands we discovered that time 👌 And the cool thing was, that we started with around 100 people and troughout the show more and more people joined, so there were at least ~1500 people having a great time at the end!

I was highly impressed with their rendition of Metallica's Battery, especially when they did the guitar solo with their vocals. Soo as regards original stuff by Van Canto (no ranking intended, just the order the songs popped in my mind; I would suggest number 3 and 2 for reacting though):
    1. If I Die in Battle - not that amazing video wise, but it`s a hell of a epic power metal hymn.
    2. Falling Down - first single from their recent album (from this year) with 3 lead singers (the male lead singer you seen in this video left the band due to a priority of 'real life' and family if I remember it correctly. He jumped in in these COVID Times to be a special guest on the whole album).
    3. Badaboom - A hell of music video with some ... familiar elements to it, you`ll definitely LOVE this video and song idea.
    4. Last Night of the Kings - a true a cappella ballad (the drummer is a vocalist too btw., he even leads an interesting group called 'In Legend' which does rock/metal without guitars but replacing it with piano / keytar - Soul Apart is a cool demonstration).
    5. The Bardcall - part of their 6th album 'Voices of Fire' (which was a kind of a cappella metal musical, working with a choir and John Rhys-Davies (actor of Gimli in LOTR) as a narrator in between the songs).
    6. Lost Forever - from their third album 'Tribe of Force', still one of their best songs imo.
    7. Nothing to react to, but I recommend it to ya' all if you are interested in how their sound works: on the official Van Canto YT Channel you`ll find a "How to create a Van Canto Song" - Workshop which starts with composition/inspiration and gives a glimpse on everything in the recording process and even production.
You may have noticed, I`m stucked with Van Canto form the the first time I listened their music (Grave Digger - Rebellion live at Wacken ft. Van Canto and Hansi Kürsch [Blind Guardian]). I totally love them for being such a unique band. You won't find a band like this twice. Btw. I've seen them live - they kick ass. ;)

That is quite the list, kudos! I would like to add a few more.
      - Speed of light: From the debut album. A hook that slays and shows how early on they knew how to write catchy songs without the meme-cover-stigma.
      - One to ten: An overall banger on par with Lost forever and IIDIB from the VC heydays
      - Steel Breaker: Just swag to the max from sly. Groovy song with a lot of irony and fun. (Also, I get "we do"-vibes from the Simpsons, anyone else?)
      - Holding out for a hero: If you have to go for a cover, this one is so well made and utilizes a lot of unique VC elements.

    • @ArathirCz

      I would add:
      - To Sing a Metal song (the live version from Wacken with crowd interaction is a blast) ruclips.net/video/6WgkNAGDUaY/видео.html

There is good live video for their song "To Sing a Metal Song," but of their originals "Lost Forever" is one of my absolute favorites, it is the perfect showcase of their vocal abilities. And have been a big fan ever since! Also at that same festival Udo Dirkschneider of Accept (he butchered Into the Fire so bad I can’t even stand to listen to it today!) and Chris Boltendahl of Grave Digger did Sabaton covers but not nearly as good as Van Canto.

They pop up on my spotify rando playlists from time to time, and I always jam out to them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them. Definitely agree, though, I would pay to go see them, as they seem like they'd be amazing live.

Have seen Van Canto about 15 years ago, they just released their first album and were the openers of a smaller festival. I knew them, because a friend knew their first drummer. They came on stage and the guy next to me was like "They only sing? LAME!!!" After one song he was "I NEED THEIR ALBUM!!!" :-D
You should listen to their first single "The mission", Blind Guardian's "Bardsong", "Badaboom" (superfunny video btw!),... in the end you should listen to everything they did ;-)

@TankTheTech, I really enjoyed this reaction. Van Canto is a great band. I've actually been a fan of theirs since this video was originally released all those years ago. One of my favorite songs by them is Seller of Souls, a very catchy power metal style song. Joakim seems like a very chill, fun dude. He's all over the place with the bands he's made a guest appearance on. If you have not heard it yet, you should react to the Babymetal song that he made an appearance on called "Oh Majinai!" It's a hard hitting, uplifting folk metal song complete with Bagpipes and a small violin section. It's a really odd, but fun cross-over.

My intro to Van Canto was their cover of Fear of the Dark, and I've always thought it was really cool to see how they approached both Bruce's vocals and the rest of the song in general. I loved their cover of it, and it gave me a deeper appreciation of the original as well.
And, as others have mentioned, their Wacken performances are legendary - Wishmaster, Rebellion, Fear of the Dark. Would love to see some double-reaction videos of both the originals and VC covers together!

I like Van Canto, their cover of Battery was awesome. Though this is a band, like you said, that I don't listen to on a day to day basis.
But the random thing I loved most about this video from them is that their "lead singer" (for lack of a better word) actually shaved his beard just like Joakim, haha!

Just discovered you and now making my way through your playlist. You're entertaining and we even get some extra background to the song, the bands and gear. I'm german and many of my friends are listening to that band. I always struggle a bit with it, because I'm more the metalcore guy. But, you're awesome, keep going on like now.
BTW, if you like to listen to 50s and 60s Rock'n'Roll, check out "The Baseballs" from Berlin.

If you have the chance to see them live, TAKE IT!
I saw them live on a small festival in Rengsdorf (Germany) an Wacken (both 2011).
Look for a song, where they filled in a "guitar solo".
Seeing them perfoming a solo live, while it still sounds really familiar like an actual instrument is soooooo impressive.

If you're interested, check out some of the stuff from their record "tribe of force". "To sing a metal song" or "last night of the kings" are amazing, or "bed of nails"; "black wings of hate" for an amazing a-cappella-breakdown. And yes, those exist. :D

Hey, thanks for your Van Canto response! I love this band from the beginning and I agree with you: They are a first class life band! I've already seen them when playing before 30 or 40 people. If I got it right, you would like to hear their own music? Here are three suggestions: The Seller Of Souls, Speed Of Light, Take To The Sky. Their cover songs are also really great. And they brought me to Sabaton!!

I know there're already comments about Bastian's side band, In Legend, but I can't stress enough how awesome and almost exclusive as Van Canto they are while being so unknown to the world and HEAVILY underrated. Seems like after their 2nd album they've abandoned the band, since there's no activity on their media since 2017 or 2018, and this brings me great sadness. I really hope that you might just give them some credit in the future, they're more than deserve it.

I’m really glad you got to listen to Van Canto, and I hope you’ll react to more of their songs. I think you’ll really enjoy their music video for their song “Badaboom;” and it’s worth mentioning that all the sounds in that music video were made only by their voices and the drum kit. And here’s a teaser: the Badaboom music video features samples of other covers they’ve done. But beyond that, it’s a good song, and a really entertaining music video. Plus, there will actually be gear to talk about in that video!
I also want to note that I’m not really a fan of how they mixed the album Primo Victoria is featured on, as the guitar vocals are on the weaker side. Personally, I think they have a much more impressive sound on the Dawn of the Brave album (Badaboom is on that album) and their most recent album, To the Power of Eight (Raise Your Horns, and a truly amazing cover of Run to the Hills-at least when it comes to the blisteringly fast guitar vocals). I first discovered Van Canto when I wondered if there was an a cappella cover of Metallica’s “Battery,” and I saw that Van Canto did a solid cover. Now, while I enjoy it, they were still trying to find their sound, and it’s not nearly as polished as their more recent albums. However, on the album “Tribe of Force” they unleashed an AMAZING cover of Master of Puppets, although sadly there is no music video for that one.
Lastly, if you do decide to check out a song from their very recently-released album, To the Power of Eight (“Raise Your Horns!”), you’ll find Van Canto recorded an a cappella version of the sounds used in the most recent Napalm Records splash screen.

Honestly, I feel like listening to Van Canto the first time through a cover of a song you know is the best way to appreciate how well done this whole concept is, even if someone doesn't like the sound of it itself.
And god damnit, seeing your first time reaction gives me massive nostalgia, as Van Canto was one of the three bands that got me into rock/metal along with Powerwolf and Saltatio Mortis.
Since you want to check them out more, here's a list of songs I'd suggest for that matter (All from Napalm Records and the Van Canto RUclips channel):
    - If I Die In Battle -> Original Song and my personal favourite *wink wink*
    - Lost Forever -> Again an original song
    - Last Night of the Kings -> Original song and more of a ballad
    - To Sing a Metal Song (Wacken 2011) -> Original Song and a live version with good quality
    - Dead by the Night -> Original Song from their newest album. This album features the original singer "Sly" and their current one "Hagen"
    - Fear of the Dark (Wacken 2014) -> Obviously not original, but a cool collab version of Van Canto, a background choir and several guest artists performing one of the best known metal songs in the world.
And a little fun fact: Van Canto teamed up with Christoph Hardebusch (German fantasy author) to work on a book-album combo, "Voices of Fire". So if anyone is into reading fantasy books and wants to listen to an a cappella song after each chapter, go for it.

Hey Tank, since I don´t know (might mave missed that) where to suggest you some songs you´re might interested in reaction to, I just do it here and hope will recognise it.
The first Band I´d love you watch reacting to is "Elvenking" with either their song "Loser" or "Invoking the woodland spirit". And my second guess would be "Nocturnal Bloodlust" with their song "Malice Against". After all I´d wanna thank you for making these videos and brighten up my days.
