    Joe I'm a Marine Vet. and if I've learned anything it's that "sh!t will always hit the fan." You can't control it. Not finishing a show doesn't discredit all the Amazing knowledge you've passed on through your videos. I watched most your videos before I realized you were on Alone. I went back and watched it. Man I felt your pain and frustration. But hey now you can get back to making kick ass videos. I'm looking to make a big move to Montana and I've been watching your videos making sure I have the fundamentals before I go out and practice. Keep up the great work. Semper Fi!

It doesn't make sense. The only reasonable conclusion is that he did it on purpose to get out of the contest.

    Joe, I've been watching your videos regularly for several months now and until recently I didn't know you were on "Alone." I don't usually watch it. When I was kid (I'm 65 now) what is now called "Bushcraft" is what we called "camping." If you were going camping you better know how to perform certain tasks or; you were gonna get wet; or go hungry; or not be able to stay/keep/get warm. Times change. I had been out of the woods for a very long time but within the last couple of years I've gone back to them. It's like I've rediscovered them! Your videos, your knowledge, your tips and recommendations have helped me "catch up," if you will, and re introduce a part of my life that I didn't realize exactly how much I missed. Thank you. Don't worry too much about what happened on that show, shit happens. We all do dumb things. I, for one, will continue to watch and learn from your videos.

      I live on the east coast of Vancouver Island but visit the west coast several times a year and can confirm:
      1) The west coast is really wet. It's called a rainforest for a reason.
      2) Salal and blackberry bushes are everywhere and make travel through the forest very difficult.
      3) Most places the terrain is steep and cut by ravines, especially near the coast. The island was not flattened out by the ice age like most of North America. Backwoods campsites would be really hard to find, and especially hard to find near a stream (and neither 100-200ft above nor in the flash-flood zone).
      4) The west coast is damp and cold even in the summer most years.
      I found most of these youtube channels starting when I was building a car SNAP kit for the possibility I might get stuck out in that area for a night or two, among other possibilities.

      Same here Brian. I had no clue about the show. I have re-discovered long ago buried outdoor woodsman self as a result of watching Joe's videos. The main thing that draws me to Joe is his down to earth demeanor rather than the typical, "I am the baddest ass beast survivalist in the woods." I click right off of those but am somehow mesmerized by Joe's straightforward honesty, love of nature and the outdoors and obvious devotion to his family. And Brian.......... Saepe Expertus, Semper Fidelis, Fratres Aeterni.

    Strength to you my friend, i understand the intensity of emotions out there totally. Take care bro i wish you stuck it out a little longer maybe you would of found the ferrorod eventually, but without it you were in dire trouble as we both know; fire out there was hard enough as it was.. without a ferro? Insanity. Only 1 other viable way i found out there which you could of used only if you had already gotten fire once tho, ill leave it at that.

    Losing a firesteel does not make you a loser, or inadequate, or mean to say you do not deserve to be there. It makes you human, and ANYONE could have made the same mistake. Could you have stayed longer? Possibly, but returning to your wife and family is more important than testing yourself needlessly, because as you said, you were unlikely to win at that point.
    Take this advice from a divorced guy....your family is a greater winnings than any TV network or internet fame can provide. You have already won.

    I started watching your bushcraft shows before I watched you on "Alone". My husband and I enjoy your videos and love learning from you. We are inspired to go in the spring and build shelters and start fires with flint. Thank you for your courage and passion. You lost your flint on the show and tapped out, that's ok. Don't let the negative comments get to you. I know its easy to take it personally, especially if you are already beating yourself up. We believe in you. If you believe in yourself, it doesn't matter if you win or loose. You are putting yourself out there, making mistakes in public, that takes a lot of courage. You do have what it takes.

    Hey Joe, Loved the show... and man I was rooting for you brother! I was surprised that you tapped when you did... since I was just thinking, "Joe just cracked the code"... but I completely get what happened. The bottom line is "survival sucks!" No one knows or understands the stresses you faced. No one. Mistakes happen. I am the KING of doing things wrong to learn what is right. And in survival, it's often a moving target. But, I am sure you are a better man for it all. Don't let what happened on the show bum you out. Keep training. Keep the channel going. Keep learning. Keep growing. Good, honest video mate. I know I have tuned in late to this discussion but I would like to offer my opinion. I reckon you made a good call. -- Life happens and it is not always in our favour. A ferro rod is only a few inches long and can disappear on the ground right in front of us. I lost mine when it flew out of my hand and vanished into a bush only two feet away from me. I never found it. We have to adjust and make new decisions based on what is now in front of us. -- My personal opinion is that sticking it out for a few more days would have been a mistake. No fire means no cooked food, no warmth and worst of all no guaranteed safe drinking water. Sticking it out for a few more days could have meant a medical evacuation and some long term physical damage because of bacteria or disease in your system. Alone was just a temporary reality TV Show. You still had a permanent real family that you knew you had to provide for. -- In the military we had whole platoons (about 30 men) change plans and/or alter course because "one of us" had damaged or lost something major or made an error in judgement. It happens and it happens a lot, especially in mentally and physically challenging scenarios like yours and ours. But we always called that person "one of us" because we had all made mistakes, some of them worse. The person who felt the worst was always the poor fella who did it, but the rest of us backed him up. -- With declining energy reserves, the uncertainty of safe drinking water and up against a bunch of guys who could still make fire, you made the right call mate. -- I would be happy with half of the knowledge and skills you have Joe. -- As for you haters, if you aren't preparing to prove YOURSELF on the next season of Alone, then shut the f..k up. Have a nice day, peace and love, lol.

      The truth is that no one ever know how they will react to things when it turns real.
      You went out there by own choice, there are people that wouldn't.
      Seen comments about the guy that bailed out when he heard wolfs, mean comnents.
      I have no idea how I would react in a situation like that so I avoid to comment.
      Not easy to survive with rules.
      Still, that was just a tv show.
      I'm looking forward to your next video. :-)

      Windham Woodcraft Gill nets are very easy to deploy and very effective if the size net mesh is correct for the species. They are fashioned to capture adult species of a specific fish (more or less). The fish can swim into (upstream for our purposes) the net which is positioned vertically in the water. They can get their heads through the mesh all the way past the gill plates but not their bodies. Their bodies are larger and will not fit through the net mesh. They try to back out and their gill plates are now on the upstream side of the mesh and the cannot back out as the gill plates block their head from backing out the mesh.

    Honestly fuck those people who say you should quit your channel. Being a good outdoorsman doesn't mean never making mistakes or knowing it all, but you know that. It takes a big person to fully own their mistakes like you have in such a public way, and you have my massive respect for that. In retrospect maybe you wish you stayed longer, but in the moment that was the right decision and thats all that matters. Don't forget that those haters have no idea what it takes physically and emotionally to be out there ALONE in that extreme environment with no food or water, and FILMING it at the same time! I can only begin to try to relate to that. Good for you Joe.

Those of us who have lived through tough times know you are only as good as your last attempt at anything. A man lives his entire life trying to be the best person they can be. Joe your no different you took the chance to chase your dream. You fell short this time and for your attempt you should be praised not degraded because of a simple mistake. Joe...I could only imagine how difficult it was for you to make this video. Anyone that knows anything about wilderness survival should have nothing but the utmost respect for you and your participation. Most guys would not even attempt, let alone, participate in what you did. Things happen. Sometimes we make mental mistakes which cost us dearly like forgetting to secure a piece of crucial gear. I would have done the same thing you did if I lost my fire steel. You're right, in a wet climate how can one procure fire? The elements would have eventually got you without the ability to make fire. Most people don't realize that the number one thing which kills you in the outdoors is hypothermia. I give you a lot of credit for being selected in and participating in this event. You are not a loser...you are a learner! Hold your head up and just ignore the negative comments....they'll go away. Much respect to you Joe.

    I only just recently subscribed to your channel and noticed that you were on this show (which I had never heard of before now). Anyway, I smashed through all the episodes in 2 days (totally hooked). Was absolutely gutted for you when you lost that fire steel. I actually thought that when the team came for you that they were going to offer you another one and let you continue (sadly they didn't). Just remember that if people are telling you that one mistake justifies having to stop your videos etc that they haven't got a clue about the stuff you do. I'm an ex-Royal Marine and have done a few bits of military survival but only recently have started getting into "civvi" bushcraft/survival. Your videos can help people do that and if you inspire 1 person out of 1000 then it is still worth it regardless of what the rest of them say. Keep up the good work and I look forward to future videos.

    From the beginning and what little I saw of where they dumped you guys I don't see that this was a true test of your knowledge of bushcraft and survival. First off, you would never in your life go to a place like that unprepared. ie you had no lanyard for your fire steel and no other possible source of a spark. So I think they picked a place that was way out of line for the test. I believe it would have been better for the show and the participants if they had picked the kind of area where you might find yourself in a drier climate so your whole existence did not rely on one piece of gear. The show would have been much better to watch and the viewers would have been able to learn something about survival if you were in a place that was more survivable. They may as well have dropped you off in the Sahara desert or dumped you in the ocean.

    • @newhampshirebound8551
      @newhampshirebound8551 9 лет назад +9

      mobiltec I agree. And although i like the show, I would like it better if it was produced differently. I abhor almost all tv for the same reasons I have a beef with the way the show is produced. Frankly, I don't want to see a dramatic production with the dramatic fast cuts and dramatic music. This is why I hate reality shows that I otherwise would love, like Swamp People, etc. I just want to see the straight up skills. Nor do I care for the family segments and whatnot. Think of how the Ray Mears series were produced...that is chock full of all skill, and I know that was s a different show, but it didn't have the bs pop production values I hate. Maybe thats just me, but that's my two cents.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec 9 лет назад +3

      NewHampshire Bound I agree with you 100%. What these producers are looking for is drama, not reality. The conditions that these 10 guys were dropped in are ridiculous and pretty much not survivable without a lot of equipment. No one in their right mind would end up there in the first place. We don't need TV shows. We have Joe's and many other quality videos to watch on bush craft and survival techniques.

      Offtrail Bound At least one person mentioned that they were thinking they had to be ready for the year, and anyone going into this should have been ready for a year. So time of year didn't really matter in the beginning.
      If they had dropped them off when there was less rain and before bear feeding season then we would have seen more skill-testing and people drop out due to not being able to cope with being alone.
      They started them in perhaps the worst time of year for inexperienced people.

I just saw what happened and I want to tell you that I have nothing but respect for what you did. 99.9 of the people commenting on RUclips would never have the guts to go out there so please don't listen to them.
    People seriously underestimate how much of an effect exhaustion, hunger, dehydration and stress can have on you. I may not have been put in a survival situation, but I have suffered from severe exhaustion and stress before so I can only imagine what that must be like with hunger, dehydration and isolation added to the mix. When you're going through those things you make mistakes you wouldn't normally make.

    Those who left immediately due to fear of wolves etc. also command respect. This is a show and you would not be committed like you would in real survival situation. If you die on show how would it look? Who would be so crazy for money to put his life on line?
    So I loved the show for such a realistic show. Even the rescue teams are far away. Though they shuld be closer for safety reasons.
