Joe Robinet talking about doing The Wilderness Living Challenge: • What Would you Choose ...
Why are there so few women watching the channel?
Are we just going to be catching and eating fish on our survival challenge?
I'll talk about whether or not I have completely "lost my edge" or if this channel is going to double down on the masculinity.
What happens when a video is "age restricted?"
I show off my maple sugar collection.
I will answer if Joe Robinet is doing The Wilderness Living Challenge.

The whole problem with age restrictions on RUclips is a big one. You’ve shown that you’ve got a good head screwed on your shoulders, though, so I’m sure you’ll hammer it out soon enough. Best of luck to you man, I’m rooting for ya!

i like that all these bushcrafters, campers and hikers are all giving each-other ideas and inspiration, whats good about this is that there will be content to watch no matter who the youtuber is, so im not fussy when it comes to seeing the same content, there is always something different, like the atmosphere, banter, food or fire techniques, even just the sense of the whole video, so im up for anything.

I enjoy your content as well as Joe's content. Yes they're different but that don't make one better than the other one. Yours is more living off the land and I enjoy that. With that being said we're all one and we should stick together. And I know you weren't bashing him but some of the people in comments was I felt. Love you both and wish you the best

I most certainly was not talking badly of him. I have a lot of respect for Joe and what he has done from essentially scratch and failure. He wasn't just given what he has, he built it.

One of the things that I really liked about your videos is that in addition to the information sharing like how to prepare various proteins the reality is you're providing a day in the life. And secondly you're transparent approach to what works and what fails. So many other video bloggers do not show their failures.

I found your channel because I wanted to study up on some survival skills for this 5 day backpack I'm going on for my senior graduation project. I just wanted to thank you for continuing to put out free content for us all. I binge watched seasons 1 and 2 (so far) of your wilderness survival series and have learned so much. Despite having to deal with the occasional struggles of relying on youtube as a platform, I greatly appreciate what you do for the community and wish you the best in your inevitable growth. Thank you for inspiring me and getting me pumped to immerse myself in nature, even if it means I won't be living entirely off the land. Best wishes.

I will watch whatever you upload to youtube. I find you interesting and informative. You have a lot of knowledge to share. I have been watching Joe Robinet for a long time, what he does is great. I like listening to your views on life. You can still show future generations how to's....and around the campfire at night do your faq's or subscriber q&a's. No matter what you do you will have a fan base always. From Perth Western Australia.

You are teaching people very valuable information. RUclips should let you show where food comes from, how it's gathered or killed, and how to skin and process the animal. These are things that most of the world has gone away from. If something major were to happen here in the states people would go anarchy. Most people out there wouldn't survive. I love your videos. Stuff I didn't even learn in the military. Chris, as a disabled vet I thank you for not only teaching other people survival skills but you've helped my 2 children learn more than I can get out and teach them. Keep up the great and valuable work.

Just a thought... What about doing something like shooting some adventures and editing to PG with a link to a second video of the good stuff. I know that's asking for a huge editing commitment, so only on a limited basis, but it might be a solution to some situations where you find you have important content or messages and want it to reach as broad an audience as possible and still offer the true, unfluffy content to people who want the full beards an experience. As for your trip, I'll basically say what I did to Joe: I, and I think most viewers want to learn, want to see you challenged, want to see the successes and failures, but not to watch you suffer. However you decide to build the challenge, equip yourself with what you need (or the tools to build what you need)to be comfortable at night and any down time within the parameters you set. I'm not saying go glamping or have no struggles through over equipping, just give some thought to things that increase having a good, restful sleep, and improve your emotional and spiritual edge.

One thing I noticed with creating content is that it's easy to get addicted to the instant gratification of how many views and likes you get within the first week, used to determine my happiness based on if my weekly success rate was the same but I realized that some people are simply too busy to consistently watch me so it's not the content that's bad or anything it's just being being busy, I'm rooting for you brother!

Cool that you & Joe collaborated on the wilderness survival idea. That Alone experience really disappointed him because he's better than that. But it proved to be a humbling experience which, I think, has made him even better.

I always dig your primitive style vids and your minimalist approach to being outside. Joes videos are very bushcrafty and making shelters so I think in the interest of staying different, as you were planning you don’t really need to do a lot shelter wise. I dig the idea of 100 years ago and 500 years ago days. Something along those lines would be cool. Regardless you doing camping and fishing on the lake will prolly be enough for your core audience. I wouldn’t stress TOO much on trying to come up with something unique.

Thanks for all the great content, I really appreciate all the work you put into providing us viewers good, fresh content on a regular basis. In many ways I find myself with similar feelings and passion for the outdoors and survival skills (but not the same) so am attracted to the videos you post to get another point of view. Like the things you've mentioned about, caloric intake and energy output for hunting/gathering of food, catching, prepping, storing meat, male/female roles etc.
I also think it was interesting/great and fun to see how you interacted with your bride in the wild, in my opinion you appeared to compliment each other very well without much if any conflict. Who knows, you may have just edited those parts out (haha), but you both genuinely appeared to be enjoying the experience, even though you were focused on filming, directing, producing and educating simultaneously while she acted the part of willing participant.
As far as "losing your edge". One thing I have come to learn as I grow older is to just continue sharpening, there is no true way to keep your edge as sharp as in your youth but to quote a famous song from Toby Keith, "but I'm as good once as I ever was". Hope to keep that going till the end!
Myself, have hunted some (deer, elk, antelope, rabbit, upland birds and waterfowl) and continue to fish on a semi-regular basis but never trapped so those videos are of particular interest for me from a learning standpoint. Also hoping for some culinary help with the catch and cook stuff, my cooking skills are pretty limited! Look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future. thanks again!

  • @Squez99
    @Squez99 6 лет назад

I would say the videos where you set up a camp and catch n cook wild animals - the process is what is most interesting. Maybe it’s because something as simple as where your going to sleep or hearing you talk about what you’re going to eat not because your necessarily hungry but because you need energy to continue building your camp...I don’t know anything about what you do but when you take something that I take for granted and achieve it in the wild is fascinating to me...idk..hope that makes sense.

Personally I'm interested to see some more survival elements in the next season of The Wilderness Living challenge, like building shelters. I know you've said it's not your style, but that's what I'm interested to see. Something in the style of Alone. So 10 items also sounds good to me.
Another idea that could be cool is some sort of nomadic adventure - travelling from A to B, maybe with some historical narrative (certain tribes may have migrated at certain times of the year for various reasons?). So you would have to carry shelter with you, or set up a new shelter every night, forage and hunt along the way and also see a bunch of different stuff along the journey. I'd also like to see you improvise your hunting or fishing strategies depending on the land which you encounter on the way, rather than planning in advance to drive somewhere to demonstrate a certain strategy. A mix of both would be good.

Hey man, you’ll be fine regardless.
Food for thought... I come from a reservation in sw ny and have seen attempts to establish a true long term camp / bug-out area. The idea was to find a good spring uphill from the area, dig - modify - divert and establish a clean catch basin. No one ( including me ) ever worked it to fruition. Granted, not high action bit could be worked in to a variety sustainable practices a lot of folks may be interested in.
Whatever direction you head, deeming it right for you and yours should come first. Peace, love and ....Canadian jam knots!

Your content is real world survival-style catch & cook brother. While I like Joe, his approach has been different, and I value your style of productions. Your acquisition of subsistence is a strategy that is taking a back seat in modernity. We need realism such as what you have been doing.
As an avid outdoorsman, and an anthropologist, I can affirm through empirical evidences, that it is a dying way, but yet simultaneously remains a subject of great concern to many people that we maintain the knowledge of providing self subsistence strategies when needed. I applaud the way you've approached your channel, and implore you continue to teach those seeking such knowledge to keep our Hunter/Gatherer inheritance a tradition and lifestyle, rather than be left to the wayside, to dissapear like so much of our past has become. These vital skills may be of great importance one day, to many of us.

I would be interested in seeing you guys to a wilderness living challenge that involved aboriginal prep. For instance, it would be highly unlikely that a native or ancient man would be out in the wilderness without having prepped. I would say a bit of acorn flour, some dried meat, a knife, some leather, an ax, a bow. Stuff like that. Walk into the wilderness with those things, then gather starches, proteins and fats while surviving. With the prep, I bet you guys could stay healthy, and maybe get ahead.

I'll watch whatever you put out Chris, I'm a big fan of your channel. I think you guys should forge your own knives for the 100 year challenge. Go old school and film the process. I'm an amateur knife maker myself and I learned how to do it watching you tube videos. It's not very easy to do, but it's pretty cool being able to utilize a tool that you made with your own hands. I also built my own forge out of stuff I had kickin around the house. It's definitely do-able. Good luck in Texas.

You have a very different style than Joe. Have you two thought of a 5 day trip together, any plans for such a trip? Joe is a bit more squeamish but would handle things well. As for what you and Jeremy should do on your trip to WCPP, more than 10 items but do put a limit on it. A day fishing primitive would be interesting.

Maybe thin hemp string works as fishing wire. It's pretty water resistant. Can add some metal wire to the end if the fish have teeth. Hemp has been around for a long time, so maybe it was used for fishing.

Silk line, and even shellac covered copper was some of the fishing line 100 years ago. Silk was used by the Japanese for hundreds of years for dapping or tenkara style fishing. And bone hooks and gouge style hooks ( like a toggle). Not sure about bow hunting like a recurve in Canada in Missouri we can use the bow for fishing and all small game there is a minimum draw weight and limited season on deer but that’s just wildlife management and to be expected. The maple sugar darkens partially in part to the amino acids as a side not amino acids allow you to use baking soda instead of baking powder in things like bannock as the high amino acids activate the baking soda. Good deal on the channel nice research and looking forward to more from you wish I had more I could contribute.

    Hey brother,
I think this is the first time I've left a comment here on your channel and I actually don't watch too many vids from other channels (just don't have the time really).
I wanted to weigh in on this because its pretty close to home.
As for the PG stuff, I think you're doing the right thing. As a creator myself (busting my backside trying to build the channel) like you with hopes of building a small business that will help fund my own videos and adventures... I hear ya' most people don't realize the expense and effort that goes into these video projects. (rambling...) The thing is, I've tried to keep it PG all along and I know that its slowed my growth but at the same time I know what RUclips expects. I know that if I was RUclips and laid out the ground rules for creators that I would expect them to be followed.
I think that in the long term creators will find RUclips tightening up more and more and when that happens it will be well worth sticking within their policies.
Anyhow, best of luck with your channel. Keep up the good work.
    Jason

I think I may have said this before, its not to do with whether you are male or female, its about who you are, your goals, interests & passions. How a person wants to live their life. My husband and I get out into the Australian bush every second weekend (more often when we can). We both do it for the the same reasons, we love being out there away from people, kayak fishing and the everyday basic stuff we need to do to be out there. Both of us have most of the same skills, just at differing levels depending on practice or interest. As I have also said before, I still enjoy your channel.

See who can last the longest without anything as a side bet. Then go as minimal as you can. The person that uses the least to thrive wins. Plus, it puts a real perspective on what it takes to survive; will be an eye opener for all of us that are prepping but don't have the opportunity to do a trip like that.

well said, i agree,be who and what you want to be,be true to yourself ,and don't worry about pleasing everyone, because you can't.even the man who could walk on water couldn't please everyone, and we all fall short of that mark...btw i just joined DSC..

You could do something I saw on Fowlers channel, still do what you like catch n cook and all that, but for the dispatching of animals and prepping them to eat make a separate video you could stick in the description, that way you still get the video you want and people can choose to watch or not and that way hopefully RUclips promotes the main video. Hope all of this makes sense, it totally did in my head :p

Since it sounds like season 4 of the WLC will be primarily fishing focused as in season 1, I think it would be cool to see you guys use some fishing lures that you crafted yourself. Maybe some hand tied hair jigs or a hand carved crankbaits rather than relying on modern plastics and and metal based lures. Pairing that with some hand line fishing could be an interesting experiment

The difference in early season and late season Maple is the quantity of bacteria. Very little at the beginning. Butt loads in the end. The bacteria carmelizes and gives the color.

You should take about 10-15 pounds of bannock(flour). It was a big part of the natives diet, and they often just ate ONLY bannock for weeks at a time.

I love your channel. I think I like it because you’re real and honest. I wish I had an answer for you, but I don’t think there is one. Joe has 500000 subs and he’s terrible. Keep doing what you’re doing because I think the people you are trying to reach are the ones tuning in.

Get out there, make a lake shore retreat homestead, turn into resort, fishing, hunting, wilderness survival camp course situation. There was a Canadian fishing vid channel out here, and you fly / boat in, and spectacular options. You have all that free royal forest-lake domains to squat and develop. Make it happen.

The whole wilderness challenge thing is good however I don't need to see bow drills natural shelters. Tarps, lighter and even a gun for hunting is all a huge part of outdoors IMO....oh yea, it's got to have Jeremy in the vid too. He's very wise when it comes to the outdoors. Cheers

Would like to see you take a small day pack with you into the wilderness, see what you put in it, hear the reason for those choices, see the gear put into action with associated skills.
So many channels have Bug Out Bags ect, they show off the contents of but never test them.
Would be cool to see a real outdoorsman's version of one of these bags actually used.
