      @DJ May: a lot of us don't have the ability to. I'd have to walk for about a week before I could get to woods anywhere near this secluded. If I put in that much work I'm not coming back, so I personally would want to get myself a dynamo or solar cell for charging my electronics beforehand so that I can at least have a functioning phone while I'm traveling and before I get around to making a water or wind mill of some sort.

He often asks me if we are going to watch "Joe". Sometimes prefers to watch over his own shows. Anyways thanks for doing what you do. Super great suggestion, i've seen different kits and setups he's carried but not how he maintains stuff like his saws, knives, axes, hot tent, tarps, hammock, big agnes, boots, gloves, cook set...and maybe how/where he stores it all. If you spend a bunch of time in the wilderness it seems from my experience that gear multiplies like rabbits. Lots of stuff to fit different needs/conditions/environments. (spring, summer, fall, winter, tropical, sub tropical, rainforest, boreal forest, valleys, mountains, deserts, beaches)
      I've decided it is time to get rid of the living room furniture and just replace it with storage bins..think sleeping bags in one, pads in another, alpine gear in this box and stoves in this one and then and then and then.....

    Joe, your work allows viewers to live vicariously through your videos. Making camp is just part of the experience. It is important. I doubt viewers get bored with it especially if each one is in different location and under different circumstances. Seeing the landscape is part of the attraction... and the dog. Don't forget Scout. We can tolerate your mug as long as the scenery is first rate... and you have the dog...and food.

    Hey Joe, after having watched all of your videos, I've noticed that your channel stands out so much more than these other bushcraft channels on RUclips. You really capture the charismatic personality within you, and are able to personify that with your cinematography. It's as if the viewer is right there with you all along (its really fun and therapeutic to watch). It is very important to be informative and instructional, but if you aren't able to add a pleasurable viewing experience, it ends up being being so monotonous (don't want to name names). Keep up the good work! Much love- from California!

    Hey Joe, I'm probably one of many of your older viewers, and I just want to say thanks, thanks for entertaining us, educating us and encouraging without actually telling us to get up and do more. That said I would really love to get into what you're doing but unfortunately, health-related spinal issues have hindered me since 95 when I was in forces. so last 23yrs I have been restricted in what I can do. But want to do something camping wise.
    So here's my question to you, how would you cope if you were debilitated ie (with a spinal injury, still able walk tho encased in a brace (to hold you together) there's Pro's and Con's to Tenting or Hammocking?
    There's many who will shake their heads saying mad to try logistically too much trouble, but if you're faced with having to bugout, you have to look for positives don't you!!. Appreciate your thoughts on this, you probably help many with your thoughts on this subject "Camping with Mobility Issues".
    As I said, appreciate what you do, enjoy watching your thought-provoking challenges in all aspects of being outdoors. Thanks again, regards from Scotland
    PS the kidney shaped canteen as the name suggests is for sitting ur canteen next to your kidneys (old army style webbing Pat:58 belt in UK) positioned it that way.

    • @Andrea.1tree
      @Andrea.1tree 6 лет назад +4

      Hi Robert. I have a suggestion for your mobility issues. Try getting a cooler with wheels with a long handle. You can tie it to your backpack and carry heavier things along behind you. Such as a camp cot if the hammock with mattress doesn't work for you. I like to use one since I've gotten older. I also take a couple ISO matts, or thick exercise pads and the cot is extremely comfortable. The added bonus is you're off the ground and getting up is much easier. You could also look into cot tents. I bought one and it's amazing! Comfort and camping aside, it only takes me 5 minutes to set up. I hope that helps.

      Just got to thinking after reading your post, I'm not sure exactly what your limitations are, but if weight on your spine is a problem, maybe you could make use of something like these?
      www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/summit-equipment-the-rocky-big-game-leg-pack-system-advantage-timber?a=328780
      Perhaps you could load some of the heavier gear (food, water, hatchet, tent ect...) onto your legs/hips?
      You could further reduce your strain AND increase your stability with a nice pair of telescoping hiking poles.
      Also, though very expensive, the gold standard in gear for long distance hikers is referred to as ultra-light gear, its extremely light and very compressible and usually extremely functional as well. There is an ultra-light version of just about everything.
      Instead of swinging an axe, grab a Silky saw to tear through limbs with ease then use your knife to process it down as needed.
      I hope you can figure out some solutions that work for you, just about everything you can dream up is for sale somewhere on line.
      Cheers

      Hi Robert hope you're well. I'm a fairly new subscriber and have just come across your comment.
      I to have problems with my spine and legs, not as bad as yours i don't think, and long to be outdoors again.
      I was in the forces for a number of years and loved fieldcraft more than anything else. Since the problem with my spine started and P.T.S.D i have been afraid to go wilderness camping again and would love to go.
      I was told to ask the Legion about it but they can't help. I haven't asked yet but SAFFA or H4H might know of some way of helping both of us to be able to do it again. Anyway, Good luck to you and hopefully you can get out there again. Wayne (From the U.K)

      Im not who you were asking, and I'm nowhere near experienced enough to advocate that it WILL work, but I think you might like to look into car-camping (truck-camping, vehicle-camping, etc... whatever they call it). Google that and look into it. I think that might be low-stress enough for you, but still engaging. Just my two cents.

    Dunno for how long I've been subscriber, but Joe really brings something special about camping and stuff. The camera work and angles which he does by himself are amazing. Dunno if people realize how much effort it takes especially in winter camping. The details of his work and explaining what he does, whats good, whats wrong. Alot of camp youtubers out there but none even close to Joe. And mostly important - he loves what he does and he is enjoying every beer, every stake, you can't fake this. I watch and listen him at work, while chillin with games on my PC or whatever. I know he won't see it but I am sure alot of people are feeling his friends like I do just because of the environment he creates in every video.

    Great video. The time you saved by not making a typical "long-term" bushcraft camp, you were able to document things such as leopard frog, the mist, turkey vultures, flying squirrels, the rapids, etc. It free'd you up to enjoy and share wildlife and environmentals that couldn't be captured otherwise. Diversifying your content is greatly appreciated. Great job, Joe.

    The bow drill reminds me of my 6th grade teacher who was an avid camper and survivalist! He would incorporate so much of it into our lessons and that’s honestly what I remember the most. He taught us how to build shelters, make bow drills and a few other ways to start a fire without matches. He was such a cool teacher to have, and you’re such a cool RUclips teacher to those of us who are curious and also fascinated by all of it. 😊

    for anyone interested >15:37 its a sugar glider joe, they are similar to flying squirrels but are more closely related to koalas i think, they are nocturnal and stay in the hollows of trees during the day, they are also marsupials so they have a little pouch for the young, like kangeroos. very cool to find one in the wild :D

    • @mjoelhicks
      @mjoelhicks 6 лет назад +11

      It was a flying squirrel, sugar gliders are from Australia, and aside from some released domestic ones they don’t exist in the wild here. They also have a narrow round tail and black markings on their face, where this is grey and has a flat broad tail. Ba Bam

    Watched both parts of this video, Joe. All I can say is thanks for taking us along on your camping adventure, taking the time to film, edit and post it. I feel like I went along on your trip with you. Great camera angles and commentary, some of which I'm sure becomes tedious after awhile. Very much enjoyed your bushcraft and watching you hang a hammock as an experiment for you in this style of shelter. Beautiful scenery there in Ontario. Here in the N. Ga Mtns, I live at the confluence of the AT and BMT(Benton MacKaye Trail), of which I am a maintainer member. We strive to keep the trails safe for all hikers and on our maintenance trips, we often run into hikers sharing the trails as we work to keep them open from deadfall, water erosion and numerous other problems. We share your passion for the outdoors and look fwd to your future videos.
