    Hi Mitch,
I am so happy to know that the knife I built for you fulfilled it's duties. I realise the importance of a knife in such a situation.. I often wonder what sort of lives my creations live. They are all over the globe now and in remote places. I will never get to see these places for myself, but to know my work has been there is very warming indeed..
Thankyou for choosing to take the knife.
    Sandy

I have so much respect for all 10 of you guys who did this show's first season. Those weather conditions are TOUGH. Nothing is ever truly dry. Especially tinder or firewood. Long nights, the tide running is a constant clock, ohh and here's 45 extra pounds of stuff for you to lug around that doesn't do anything to improve your day to day situation. And when seconds count in an encounter with a large predator, the people coming to help you might be 4 hours away. I don't have those skills. I don't have the practiced mindfulness to read that environment and discover the things that will be a help to me. Kudos to you all.

I would much rather be in the Australian bush where we have many of the worlds deadliest snakes and spiders rather than having bears, Cougars and wolves as potential threats. Though if you are up North we also have sharks and crocodiles which are highly intelligent and seriously dangerous.

Darryl Machtmes Respect for all 10? Hardly. Of the 10 men out there, 5 were whiny little babies, who had no business being there. One got sick .. but due to his own stupidity and should not have been their either. SIX of those ten people didn't even make it a week. On the show, "Naked and Afraid," after one of the two people was removed, due to illness, a WOMAN, naked, alone, with MUCH LESS survival equipment then those 6 wannabes had, made it 11 days!
The last 4 men on, "Alone," they lasted nearly 2 months and EARNED respect. The man in this video is one of those men, worthy of respect. Let us consider: the whiny little bitch who taps out, after 3 days, because he lost his flint; or to a lying pussy who taps out after 4, because of an imaginary a bear attack; or to a, self-proclaimed "tough guy," who can't even make it 24 hours, leaving in tears. To liken this man, placing him under the same caliber as those, who didn't make it a week, is a disgrace to all he accomplished.

Alleycat 27 I'm not even convinced that guy lost his fire steel. My favorite part was where a Cop can't even last a day, I guess he realized that Mother Nature and it's inhabitants didn't give a damn about his badge.

Love the show and really respect the fact that Mitch is holding up. As the show goes on

Mitch, I wanted to congratulate you on a job well done. First show in a very long time where the good guys won. I loved most of the guys out there, especially the final four. You made us all proud and I cannot thank you enough for representing yourself the way you did. Hope your mom is well and you got a chance to kiss your lovely wife and that beautiful daughter. Nothing but pride in having been a multi-year subscriber. You did great brother!!

Mitch, first and foremost, Thank you for sharing your faith and letting us see you love your family and miss your daughter and wife. I want to tell you that you are my favorite to win. I am totally impressed with your abilities and enjoy watching you in this series. I sense a little annoyance in your voice. Dont let it eat your lunch, you are a talented survivalist and even though it was ridiculous to count these items separately, you still are alive. I think I could do this, but till I am on the shore and watch the boat pull away, it means nothing. I will always respect you because you stepped out and took the challenge. We love you Mitch and this show is just a passing thing. You have made a name for yourself before this ever came along. Win, lose, or draw, you are still a total badass.

No matter who takes the gold, every Olympian stands tall. Survivalists train to get out of a survival situation, you 10 went the opposite, prolonging it as long as possible, pushing your skills to the limit. You sir, are an Olympian. I have learned a lot from your videos over the years, and of the 10 on the island you were my favorite. Your mindset and spirituality seems to best match my own. I look forward to more great videos from you!

Not usually a fan of too many "TV shows" but this is real stuff right here...You guys filming yourself out there sharing what your really feeling and goin through putting your skills to the test, tryin to live, for different reasons, I feel it! Lot of respect for ya Mitch, since the beginning of this I have a feeling its gonna come down to you and Lucas out there like 60-90 days and if you can survive that long in those conditions and that craziness, that will be somethin...anyway, thanks man, Ive watched a lot of your videos and have learned a lot from them, your a good dude!
    Peace

Well said Mitch. I completely understand your choices. Your skill set dictated the level of importance in your selection. Most of the gear choices were the same across the board but each persons strengths and weaknesses changed 2 or 3 items. Very intriguing!
I have to say I got very excited to see that jacklore close up on episode 4. I had just finished watching one of Sandy's shop construction videos prior to the show. I thought how proud it must have made Sandy to see his work on a big internationally renowned show :)

Watching the show you come to realize how being really alone works on your mind and breaks down your spirit to continue. Fearing for you personal safety every day is draining and makes you question your decision to participate in the show..

You were the contestant I voted for Mitch and happy to see you are still there in Episode 8! I really like the calm you have shown...from what I have seen your calmness was the best out of all 10 and speaks very highly of your comfort level in the bush. I also liked Alan's thoughts on dealing with inner demons while alone for extended periods...they just surface and it's just you to deal with them...deal with regrets and the past...I have found that to be so true on my own expeditions. Just a friendly word on the bears and cougars and wolves and this is not directed at you Mitch but the countless people who speak in fear about them.........has anyone else noticed how the remaining 4 contestants don't really speak about these critters anymore? There is a reason for that and I don't think anyone would understand unless they have spent enough time in the bush. Anyway cheers Mitch and thank you for your most excellent youtube channel!

Been watching Alone up till episode 5. I was rooting for Mitch since i've been watching his youtube channel since before the show and knew he had awesome survival skills. My personal opinion is that Mitch has shown tremendous skills from the get go. Mitch had fire in impossible conditions, built a boat out of nothing which blew me away. I was actually clapping! I have never seen that type of flotation device in any other survival show. Impressive! To top it off had found a fresh water stream then caught & roasted 5lbs of fish meat while others were eating slugs!!! My worries started when in episode 4 the MT lion was in area. I know Mitch has great survival skills but i've seen nothing on his channel about how to handle dangerous wildlife. Wasn't sure if that was going to cause him to hit that button. Then I watched episode 5. I predict Mitch is 500k richer unless dangerous wildlife makes it too hazardous. As far as surviving based on pure skill..... food, water, shelter Mitch definable has my vote!
I would like to see more youtube vids that might cover things like dangerous wildlife and other areas that might be of interest based on your experience on the show Alone. Maybe a new take on essential gear or other concerns based on these new experiences.

Brother you have my respect. You achieved something very very few would even be willing to test themselves with. I can tell you with great reserve that with my physical challenges that the cold alone would have been my undoing. I would love an opportunity to test my knowledge experience and my current handicaps to see if I could still survive and for how long. My fatherly responsibilities won't offer up the time. I love my boy very much. Any ways with God anything is possible. God's speed.

    Hey Mr. Mitchell,
I'm really pleased to see you still in the last 4. My hopes are pinned on you for the win sir. You do a great job out there. Of all the 10 ppl you are miles ahead in terms of composure and strategy. I imagine the biggest hardship for you would be missing your family. Without that burden I imagine you would still be out there. Bless ya buddy. I hope to come to the native survival school for a few lessons when I make it back to the northern hemisphere. In the mean time if you feel like coming to New Zealand I'm happy to put you up in my house.
    Cheers

That extreme cold weather army bag is the exact same one I have. Had it over 20 years (since the military, of course) and it's hands' down the warmest bag I've ever had. When I was in Korea, we used that for cold weather training. 10 degrees below zero and you had to sleep overnight with just that and your pad. Works like a charm. So good, in fact, that often I'd bring it with me on long guard duty in the middle of the winter and drape it over me to keep warm.

Hi Mitch, I've been following the show and love it. I was wondering if the bivy would be an extra item, thanks for covering that. Your pot lid if polished could make a tremendous parabolic mirror for lighting fires. I've polished several aluminum lids and they work great to light some of last nights charcoal. Stainless steel would be tough to polish but it can be done. Thanks for all you share.

  • @briantheriault4796
    @briantheriault4796 9 лет назад +1

A great selection of items. I just wanted to add some comments:
Survival is about adaptation and you not only adapted to the environment and demonstrated some serious bushcraft/survival skill sets; you adapted to the limits of a TV show as well!! I thought you were going to tap out when the cougar dropped by while you were enjoying some salmon. You didn't, which speaks to your mental fortitude. Simply amazing. I'm learning a lot from watching your channel.
Props to all the guys that took the risk to venture out there and put themselves out there. Not easy at all. That being said, IMO, the show did illuminate the more "advanced" survivalists from the "beginners". This isn't meant as a negative but simply an observation. Anyway, great job and good channel.

Fourteen Days & Four Remaining - If I understand correctly, at 14 days, those remaining didn't have any idea of how many others were also remaining. In most competitions, the competitors know exactly (or very close to it) where they stand in regards to each other. That knowledge can be a light at the end of the tunnel to some degree. Not knowing how many remain, seems to remove that light, so to speak. If most remain, this could go on for months...... If most already gone, each day could be the last day of the challenge. An interesting twist to facing the unknown without any way to gauge how much longer before crossing the theoretical finish line. Definitely a challenge when compared to knowing when a competition will end.

Huge props Mitch. I'm an island girl and know all too well the conditions you faced. I do have a big beef with the show's producers for not having rescue/ first aid closer by, or at least hire some locals with guns just in case. It's a tragic accident waiting to happen imo. Newly subbed.

Not letting you have the cover for your sleeping bag was HARSH. How many sleeping bags come with a waterproof covering fully attached? Also surprised you couldn't have bankline. I thought charring that material was brilliant. I've seen you and others use this method, but I never would've thought of it in that situation. For some reason I associate it with bowdrills, steel and flint rock

Mitch - much respect. I wouldn't have lasted a night out there. Especially with the bears and all. Good to see that there are still people who practice the things our ancestors knew how to do. Every human should know how to do this stuff. Been a subscriber for a while and enjoy your videos. God bless you and your family. Hope you win bro!

Hello, I wanted to express the same as Bordercollie did - I have been getting a lot from your videos, getting ready to do some small scale outings and discovered your adventure on ALONE just yesterday. I am not through the episodes yet so as of typing this I don't know the official winner is but as far as I'm concerned I've learned the most from you. My wife came up with names for everyone and your's is "The smart guy" - I agree. Don't know if I could endure that much time out there. Maybe one day I'll find out. Just got to the part where the net was missing.. Anyway - Just wanted to say hello and thanks for all the great videos!!

Never knew that was you on Alone... Was just watching a few of your videos as I stumbled on to your channel
43 days... much respect there. That show looked brutal. Vancouver Island also looked WET. Just rotten with a cold, humid, constant rain.
Interesting video. Great show and tell. I agree with your choices. Can always store water in your pot. Solid tools, solid sleep system. When I was in the Yukon traveling by canoe [in the fall] I kept my sleeping bag in its own dry bag attached to me at all times - because if the canoe flipped - the sleeping bag would have saved my life after I swam to shore.
    Keep up the good videos.

I don't usually frequent the comment section but I'm so enthralled with this show and everyone's experiences, I wanted to check your feelings a little if I may.
First of all, major respect to you and every other participant for landing out there and even more for what you've endured; I can't begin to imagine it and your skills and spirit are both humbling (that's an understatement). That said, I was wondering if you're watching the show as it goes on - I can absolutely see it being an experience you aren't ready to see in a third person. If you are, I'm curious how your feelings on some of your experiences have been affected compared to the moment you were in them; did they mostly stay the same or did you feel differently upon seeing what everyone else was experiencing at the time?
I know that it's already done and we're all just waiting to see it, but I'm cheering you on nonetheless!

I have been a long time sub to your channel.. I never even considered watching the show till I seen a commercial and seen you were there, That's when I knew they had picked some real experts for this adventure. I went back and watched every episode from start. That being said I'm from Ga. so i had picked my 2 favorites very fast and which ever one of the 2 it would be I was going to be happy. A little more in to the show ALL of you guys took on a challenge that was unbelievable. Respect for all on the show but bud with what you were carrying no amount of money can buy time. If I had a million dollars rite now I would give it for 1 day with my dad that is gone now. I respect everything you done on the show, Really you were the only one that didn't tap so far because of a animal and you had a cat wanting you!!! You showed you could handle everything that place had and like I said I was a fan before but man I see you in a new lite. I hope you and yours the best in your future adventures and always remember your a champ to me.... Peace brother

Congrats man. That is one damp, shady, north facing spot. The producers did a good job of showing how much it rains here on the outer coast.
Awachalto reserve on forward inlet has a lot of clams and not much else to eat in November. Glad to see that you managed to harvest salmon from the aptly named Bear Creek. The little island out front that you may have been able to reach on a low tide is covered in crab apple trees. Some of them might not have rotted yet. Of the final four of you, your reserve was definitely the poorest in food potential.
Again congrats for toughing it out for so long.

Hey Mitch, I've read through every comment so far and did not see these asked yet: In retrospect, would you opt for the exact same knife in stainless vs the carbon you had? All that salt water... Also wondering what was provided for first aid training and/or gear.
My other questions were already answered: fishing line weight, headlamps, and of course the tarps. lol
Big fan of your channel; great work on the show; best wishes! I'm heading to Port Hardy for a salmon fishing trip next month. Your Coho catch got me pretty excited for the trip! :-)
