Gas Furnace Won't Turn On | Basic Troubleshooting Trane Gas Furnace with No Heat

- On Christmas Eve, the gas furnace would not turn on. The Trane gas furnace gave no heat and the temperatures were in the single digits Fahrenheit! The so I checked the typical suspects. Furnace air filter, ignitor, and flame sensor. As in our example, it is always a good idea to have these spare parts on hand especially for holiday breakdowns. Check Amazon for:

✅ EASY TO INSTALL: SEN01114 Furnace Flame Sensor is a direct replacement for many American Standard residential furnace models.
✅ PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS: If SEN01114 Furnace Flame Sensor is defective, the furnace may not heat properly. This flame sensor monitors the burner to detect whether or not a flame is present. When the sensor does not detect the flame gas valve is closed to prevent gas leaking into the home.
Our BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING involved
1) Checking the air filter to make sure it was not clogged. A dirty air filter or a clogged air filter can stop the furnace from functioning properly.
2) Check to make sure the igniter glows - the ignitor must glow to ignite the gas.
3) Check the flame sensor and clean if it has heavy carbon deposits which can sometimes interfere with proper functioning. But, even a clean ignitor can be broken or defective so looks don't always tell the story.
Ultimately, our issue was traced back to a faulty connection between the Nest Thermostat and the control board. But most often, a gas furnace which is not turning on can be traced to simple causes like a bad ignitor or a bad flame sensor.

Our issue was a dirty flame sensor, thank you for making this video!! You've saved me much time and most likely money just for a dirty sensor.
Nice to know that for other people, sometimes it's beyond a fix they can do. I'm glad it isn't just me.
Hey Mike…,
😃 thx for watching!
Thanks for this video. Try the simple things first (Occam's razor) Thermostat: batteries, wire loose or damaged, breaker tripped, outlet for furnace plug loose wire, panel replaced after changing filter depressing cut off switch. I have personally had 3 of those things happen over the years. Hope this helps!!!
Thanks for the tips!
Thank you, I cleaned the sensor
😀
Great job! Thx for watching!
DON'T use sandpaper on the flame sensor...... use a dollar bill or green scrubbie.
Scotch brite works best
I’m having the same issue. Can you please post what they ended up changing with the wiring to make it work again?
Hey monkey,
I wasn’t there when the technician came but I know it had to do with the Nest. So double check that it is wired correctly. Maybe reach out to Nest support to clarify.
BTW - this furnace function fine all fall, and then on Christmas Eve, decided not to function. Said that to say - can be intermittent.
Thx for watching!
Probably the common wire
Do you know what the issue with the nest was? I was having an issue and rebooted my nest and it worked. But, now the issue is back.
Check the common wire
Hey guys...
Don't forget to check the fuse on the circuit board. My 5 amp fuse was just blown. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thx for the tip!!
0:26 what’s that big black button called?
Great question. It’s a safety switch (?) to make sure cabinet door/ panel is in place for normal operation.
Thx for watching.
Sometimes these things are not to expensive. But mine Surprise, On mine it was $106 up town $89 Amazon. Most videos tell you Not to use sandpaper to use a dollar bill. Mine still will not work.
👍
Thx for watching!
I have eight blinks. It says open ground somewhere. What is that? 1:15
I can’t remove the flame sensor
Why
Igniter cleaned, flame sensor cleaned idk what’s going on
Like ours, it may turn out to be something like the thermostat wiring… we finally had to call hvac guy.
