Brutally Honest Review: The NEW WRX STI (how boring is it?)

- So today we have the newest version of the Subaru WRX STI (which is not called an Impreza anymore), this came out in 2014 and has the same engine has the year previously, a 2.5l boxer engine producing 296bhp. Now I've owned a bigeye and a blobeye WRX, two of the most iconic Subarus, how is this NEW WRX going to step up against them? Surely its going to be boring.. right?

its going to be drawn REGARDLESS! 9th December 2021
So how boring is it? How does it compare to the 'proper' Subarus?..
No it's not boring, not by a long shot, and in fact.. its better than the generations previously. I was seriously surprised by how good this car feels, and how it tenders to a younger market, who MISSES the old school feel like myself. This is no motorway driver, or comfort queen.. this is still, a rally car.
Thanks for watching.
When these were new I remember them getting criticised for not being faster than a Golf R or a Focus RS but I feel like Subaru kept it old school and kept that driving experience and character that you got in older cars. I miss our old blobeye WRX and I’d love one of these new ones so I’m defo getting a ticket or 2 for this 😂
I live in dallas TX. And have a 2021 sti. 315 hp new. By far the most fun car use ever owned
These look great and a nice change to see rather than a Golf R / S3 etc. Used to see one regularly on my commute, but haven't seen one in person for a while now.
Because Gas has gotten more expensive lol
I drove the 300hp version and I was blown away with how the engine wanted nothing more than to shit you up and throw you back in the seat. Time to watch 🤙
They came with exactly the same engine as the 2008 onwards cars, so still have the unequal length headers. They just have large rear silencers out the factory that quieten then down more on this model.
Love the intro Lee, Great video bro👌🏼
From my understanding and owning a 2011 WRX STI the DCCD in Auto - will bias rear and send more power to the rear, Auto + sends more power to the Front.
Bring us back the Subaru content Lee!
You look genuiely excited + happy when you push this car
Lee, I’ve got one of these currently being built for over 500bhp if you fancy reviewing it when it’s done?
i didnt know you could get an sti without starlink, that's actually super cool. that's how I would order one subarus multi media is so bad
From a owner of one. This car handles turns like nothing else I have felt. German rivals…. No just no way of keeping up. Trust me I have had plenty of competition. It’s an impressive car for the generation that everything is auto and boring.
The gearbox holds 800 wheel no problem, if you forge the engine and change block, car can take 1000 hp no issues, there are a bunch of dudes in the US daily driving them at 1000+.
Seen 1 of these today it had 4 exhausts big intercooler splitter and side skirt splitters he had recaro seats in his i must admit i thaught the car was beautiful.
The styling is very similar to the EVO X, especially the front.
Not my cup of Darjeeling Lee, but I did like the wheels on it, you can't beat the old Hawkeye/Blobeye models I think, great review though.👍👍👍👍
Hmmm...Im pretty sure this is a 2015+ STI. The 2014 ones are a different body style. Great video! I just wanted to mention that!
Lee you sir are a git I’ve been looking at more sensible cars now guess what I’m looking at these 😂😂😂 so much for growing up 😝🤣😂
Great all-round cheapish fun cars I own a UK 2000 classic shape one, long-er gears 2nd 3rd n 5th
I like my nd1 miata Recaro seat but I am sure aftermarket is better. What year was this generation designed?
Lee i think you should review a tesla you would love the insane acceleration
ill see if I can get ahold of one!
@@itsleelockwood yes mate deffo something I would watch myself!
A Tesla will make a golf R seem like a raw drivers car 😂 soulless
@@tomcole020 😂😂be ace to see his face when it pulls like a train
@@TheShortShifter I've been in one they're mega fast don't get me wrong but I'd get so bored after a while with no drama 😂
wrx has elh sti retained uelh. Stock exhaust is quiet af a 3" aftermarket brings the car back to life.
Great review! 🙌
IIRC Some of them DO have some nice Recaro's, think they were an option. Proper driver's car.
Another sick review mate 👍🏼. You obviously rate the car highly, however in your option is the WRX a serious rival to an Evo or is it more on par with something slightly ‘softer’ like a Focus ST for example?
I would say en Evo is far superior in terms of a performance car!
You need to drive mine mate you will be Impressed as mine is tuned 👌 😉
it is explained in the user manual... everything is esplained there, you just need to read it...
I have a 13 hatch and thinking about just getting a taco and build a 94 Civic hatch for the summer. Or in short give me a turbo hatch.
There’s a guy at work who blew his up stock, so I’m not sure if I’d ever risk one 🤔
Just treat your car good and it will do the same to you, I drive the donkey piss out of my 06 wrx daily and haven’t had any issues apart from an axle seal and a power steering pump o ring
headers are un equal for standard like all sti's,it is the jdm twin scrolls and the wrx with the fa20 engine that has equal ones
This whole video I know where u were drivin this car u picked the good roads aha
I drove one of those... I didn't want to leave
Hello mate I have a 2012 sti saloon tuned yoy car drive if you want mate
Impressive car , not sure on it in white though ........................ does it come in blue ? Rare you see a blue Scooby
What I dont understand, and I see it often is all those silly little fins on the roof. WTF are they supposed to represent ?
Not the reaction I was expecting. I knew you would like it but not love it like that
Hanningfield reservoir, the roads,👌🏼
Would love one and would have one any day.
not fun like classic gen .. ( at least until 2gen )
this piece weight almost 1.6 ton ...
need double hp for make some fun ...
I miss Lee in a scooby those were the days 👌
Nothing boring about a VA chassis STi... I have an 05 blob widetrack and have been in a few VA STi. The chassis is far better than the GD and handling way sharper. The 2.5 is a bit of liability as we all know but I know many 2.5s pushing around 380bhp with no issues. All looked after and treated well, not ragged from cold.
Lovely car in the vid but my biggest bugbear with anyone who fits dog$h!t tyres like Imperial to a car like this... they should have their testicles removed.
Weird to see a “Subaru guy” not know it was the NA 2.5 not the 257 the 257 especially stock is great once it’s tuned and built it needs the best parts and can still do 500hp reliably
@@LamarTCO I get your point about the NA 2.5 but there are plenty of well documented reliablity issues with the 257 having headgasket and ringland issues. It's pretty well regarded that out of the box it just isn't as strong or as reliable as the 207.
Do these have rev matching?
No they don’t
@@Vlagggg I thought I saw something that said they do, maybe a later edition
@@Muckwell I have a 2015 and that does not have rev matching. They may have added it on the later models. The engine is quite free Reving for a 2.5, so you don’t really need it in my opinion.
2021 here they definitely don’t have rev matching. However they do have revhang from 1-2nd lmao 🤣
That WRX STI is a mouthful 😂
Love subaru I'm a fan boy of it my favourite are classics though
Awesome Content ever
Always liked subarus but the newer ones just scream bald middle aged dad who wears a subaru tshirt to his bed.
The interior especially the seats as you mentioned look awful
Ive had both Subaru and Evo. Have a real soft spot for both. Subaru just poor for tuning.
A little bit off on the DCCD explanation there mate, but a great review nonetheless!
Firstly, the STI models aren't symmetrical, they have a 41/59 rear bias torque split in Auto.
With the DCCD: Auto + sends more power to front wheels for better traction (snow, ice, heavy rain etc), Auto - sends more to the rear for tighter cornering.
I believe your statement is incorrect. It doesn't change the power from front to rear. if your split is 41/59 it will always be 41/59. What the dccd control does is it locks your differentials. The knob controls how much lock or slip you have in the diffs. It does not transfer power from front to rear
Wait what can’t call it Impreza?
I saw this car on autotrader!
Traction control off. Sports sharp and auto minus that’s my way I drive mine.
If you want to experience a true new sti. Look at the 19-21 sti. In the states they can make 700hp and 600tq on stock Internals. All you need is FBO and a big turbo.
Stock fuel system needs to be upgraded after 300+ WHP and the bottom end cannot handle 700hp or nowhere near it reliably.
That’s one of the most false statements I’ve ever read 😂
Yeah you'd deff blow your motor. 700hp on stock internals huh?
@@griffin_kith6214 what he means is the type RA block is much more able to handle the power. As the pistons are reinforced. Baderbuilt is pushing crazy times on the drag with a stock block. He isn’t wrong…
@@alvinaliasjackie thanks for the help there. All theses people speaking with out even looking up the facts
Car like that with budget tyres, SMH
People will spend money on plastic shit to stick all over their car but they wont buy a decent set of tyres😂
i really want to like these but they dont rev high at all and the fuel economy is dog shite compared to the equivalent german rivals
Is a nice motor 👌👌👌
Awesome car 👍🏻!
Seats look like the crap out of a toyota/subaru brz 🤢
What an awesome car love a Scooby 🤟😟
Lmao u coulda waited for the new model
The 2022 wrx sti has whopping 400 hp 311 tq one car you should have saved your money for instead of wasting your money on 2021. 40k us
Or just buy a 2021 and drive it for awhile than sell it for what you paid for it. Then buy the 2022.
oooh ookk i think i got it
yes confucious confusing
God when😓❤️
Remove the gay wing stabilisers
the Intelligent give you less sport acceleration more for daily driving... why U drive or test a car U dont know nothing about!?!? do U do any research
Garbage interior 🤣🤣
Head gaskets.............
The gc8 shape are the best
