I've come very close to beating this game as a Spriggan assassin, but I could never get enough runes to beat it. Make a Troll, nothing can really stop you for a bit, and you don't have to think too much about what you can and can't do. Mainly, eating, that's your main quest as a troll, eat food.
When I first started playing, you could get a curse jewelry or specific item curses, and you had to have a specific scroll to life the curse.
    The game's more streamlined now.
Oh! It's hard as hell to make it work on newer computers, but ZangbandTK is slick.
I broke that game way back when, when I was able to find the corps of a "Great worm of many colors" and posses it, and summon my own dragons to fight Middle Earth. I froze the game up by summoning other dragons who could summon dragons, who could also summon more dragons.
    It was fun.

DCSS is very deep. It generally takes about a hundred hours of playing to beat.

I adore this game but I really wish they didn't remove the hunger system and replace it with the universal timer. I get the need to push the player forward more, but the game was already fairly difficult without forcing the player to speed run if they're a more conservative and careful player.

what are you doing that it takes you over 6000 turns to complete a floor? Also how many turns did you manage to last with the food system?

Love how he kept changing gods based on the skills you can buy list but would die before even he could afford the 1st skill. Do to the god he abandons killing him within the next 5 mins.

@Nook: Prolly too late now for your free game selections, but I'd /really/ like you to do a decent (ie longer than 1/2hr) run of Nethack (perhaps with a tileset, for those who don't like pure ASCII games). I've never seen any of your vids/streams/WHY playing this ancient & constantly (tho sporadically) updated free roguelike: even a search on your channel doesn't turn up anything :(
If you want some variety while still having the base game mechanics, there are all sorts of forks of the FOSS OG code, each providing different flavours, mechanics, races etc

Is this game still following the same direction of dumbing down, simplification and removing RPG mechanics? I had been following it a few years ago, but every single update seemed like a detriment to me and I eventually gave up on it.

Agreed, dcss went really downhill after their devs started with their current philosophy of cutting everything, feels like they are pandering to a very specific kind of player rather than trying to make a fun and interesting game. Really disappointing...

I’ve only been playing in the last year so idk what it was like before but I hear this statement yall are making often. Could you tell me some of the changes you didn’t like? I genuinely don’t know what has changed.

@@jeremiahdomer4657 This is a good question. It's been years since I played regularly (due to the decisions made by the dev team), but some of the more controversial changes included:
      * "Streamlining" numerous in game systems, in the process removing a great deal of lore/character. Examples include fun god quirks like Trog worshippers burning books when they pray, many of the more wacky/fun spells which don't "fit the meta", Item variability/curses, food, ammo for weapons, etc etc
      * Removal of lore/flavor - the devs have openly stated they don't want the game to have a story, and they've made heavy attempts to remove the game's original references to fantasy classics / tolkien / mythology. It used to be that almost every item/character/tile had a quote associated with it from literature, but many of these were purged.
      * Removal of backgrounds/races/gods/etc - this is one of the big ones, and you could fill a list with the ones who've been cut. Mountain Dwarves, Halflings, Sludge Elves, Gnomes, Abyssal Knights, Thieves, Paladins... Nemlex is one of the more major gods they removed.
      * Becoming a very insular community which is hostile to players - this was a more subtle one at first, but as someone who was active in the community through the IRC for some time back in the day, the community over time became increasingly hostile toward any dissent from the "approved" opinion, and the devs pushed a lot of long time community members away with many of their choices. The current dev team is extremely hostile toward both critiques and suggestions, often going as far as openly ridiculing concepts proposed by users via the Tavern (forum).
In general, the current devs seem to want crawl to be more like a minimalist Brogue-like and less like a flavorful traditional roguelike, and that's their decision I suppose. Luckily, there are some good Crawl forks out there that preserve the game closer to how it used to be - I'd recommend giving some of them a try to see how they compare, you may be pleasantly surprised.

@@jeremiahdomer4657they got rid of eating for example. Personally I appreciate the updates making the game more game. 99% of what they have gotten rid of has just improved the game. Like books you collect go into a spell library instead of taking up inventory space is just an improvement. We used to keep stock piles in the temple that we’d go back and forth just wasted of time.

@@jeremiahdomer4657 As someone who has played the game since victory dancing and mountain dwarf were in the game, you aren't missing much. For example victory dancing for example meant if you wanted to train lets say charms you needed to preform the charms skill while having exp in the pool. So what you do is stand on a clear floor and just keep casting one single spell to put the exp into the skill. Dodging? Strip off your armor in front of a rat and just wait for a bunch of turns... Lots of people here mention hunger. How hunger worked is you would press e twice every few minutes and have 2 less inventory slots. That's it. In even older versions is just took up more inventory slots. How curses worked is you couldn't equip an unidentified before you found a remove curse scroll (which was quite common). After that the system basically didn't exist, you just had to do extra key presses when wearing some items, and lose an inventory slot or run back to your stash for the scroll. Overall the game has been getting better every version I've played it and it keeps getting better.
