    As someone who's played this game for around a decade now, this video touched on so many precious moments I never get to share with people because no one I know plays this game. Including quaffing random ass potions to save a run and getting bonked by yuif for his bitch ass cloak.

      I know, right! I went back to look at my logs right afterward out of nostalgia, and saw "killed by Sigmund" and "killed by Crazy Yuif" both in there XD

    I was looking (for the first time) for random DCSS videos on RUclips to show my gf who was interested in it after playing Dwarf Fortress together. Little did I know that I would find the perfect, concise, and fun overview which is this video! Seriously this is incredible, you really nailed a little piece of nearly every aspect of this incredibly complicated game and almost made me spit out my food with the editing too. Hats off!

      Ayyy I'm glad you enjoyed it! That really means a lo to me. Funny enough I recently got Dwarf Fortress, so I might be making a video about that one as well.

      @@kingclean I hope you do and that you're enjoying DF! I only got it recently but have already sunk like 50 hours into it. It's got depth and history like DCSS but considerably more relaxing to play. (not that they need comparison, they're both awesome in different ways)

      Saw a person talk about it when checking the overall story comments on Yonder (webtoons novel app) and Du geon and stone is based off of DCSS pretty much I guess

    Okay, DCSS is actually one of the easiest "true" roguelikes to pick up, it has a tileset, a lot of knowledge resources (including the game itself a lot of the time), and a dev team eager to remove every single obscure interaction from it.

    • @dselbrede
      @dselbrede 3 года назад +11

      While I think the changes have generally made the game better, cleaner UI, more stuff, yeah I think they are too trigger happy with removing stuff.

    Damn, that was a perfect review.
    It captured the ESSENCE of the casual DCSS experience - rolling characters like dice, and splat them for some bullshit reasons you were too lasy to plan around.
    Started in 0.13, and never won a game. Still love it.
    Also, you forgot another way to play. DCSS is the perfect MOBILE game.
    Yes, imputs are janky, you can fatfinger inputs (I spent across 5000 G on useless potion petitions pressing "a" when tabbing), and I still love it more than any other android game.

      Also, subbed and put a bell on all future videos. Imo, RUclips needs an obscure games reviewer. May the algorhytm bless you.

      That's funny, I never even considered being able to play the game on mobile. But considering it could totally be run on a toaster, I'm not surprised, I might have to check that out. And thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

      Oh if you're talking about the one that says 0 spectators or whatever, thats only for when you play online. Anyone can start spectating your game and you all can talk in that chat. Good for calling in the boys to figure a way out of a sticky situation, or for watching someone good and asking questions

      @@kingclean that's the combo I used. I got fairly lucky if I recall with a great tower shield and executioners axe early on in the run, and that helped. I was also super paranoid and made lots of kill holes to funnel enemies to me one at a time.

    will update this as i watch the video and since you said that you're inspired by Sseth I'm gonna use that as perspective to judge your work
    1- your style of narration leaves something to be desired, it's not comedic enough and on the off chance that a you cast a joke, the timing is either off or you don't let the joke "breathe"
    2- you should introduce more visual gags such as rapid zooms and flashing text and quick cuts, which are a hall mark of Sseth's production
    3- said visual gags are overlayed atop your own narration and that is very distracting

    • @kingclean
      @kingclean  3 года назад +6

    You think DCSS is the hardest roguelike? Oh, sweet summer child. Give Nethack a try.

    • @dselbrede
      @dselbrede 3 года назад

      I've tried it once, couldn't even get my head around it, and I've heard it has some really cool mechanics but I've also heard some of the horror stories.

    • @NinthSettler
      @NinthSettler 2 года назад +13

      Nethack is not a difficult game. It is a tedious game. DCSS is a difficult and exciting game.
      I got 29 wins in nethack before realizing that i hated it and switching to DCSS back in 2011.

    • @philj9594
      @philj9594 Год назад +2

      Nethack's difficulty lies in its obscurity. I don't know a single person who has beaten it without spoilers, so by that metric I guess you could argue it's the hardest roguelike. However, once you know how to beat it, it's one of the easiest roguelikes by far and even easier than DCSS. The two hardest roguelikes I've encountered are Infra Arcana and Brogue. Oh, and one final note about DCSS. Yes, it's one of the easier ones, but that really depends on the character you are playing. Stuff like mummy and formicid make the game really quite challenging. Just stop playing boring minotaurs.
