The best way to check a used AUTOMATIC transmission is to reverse up a hill (5-10% gradient) and see if it slips on you or makes a rumbling sound. The reverse is usually the most under-engineered components to save money, but it shows you the preview of what is to come for your low (highest speeds, most used) gears later on.

I agree about the Cougars, but the Cougars are REALLY hard to find. My friend had a '70 Cougar for 18 years, it had a little rust and needed a little work back in 2014, still in good running shape, but some guy saw it and offered him $25,000 on the spot, since he was from up north and never saw cars like it. Nima Nejad. Hard to find them "cheap" considering they are 25 year old econoboxes that are sooooooooooo dependable, they were mostly ignored on service after ten years. They have been so hyped as the most dependable car ever, most people want 2500 ++ even if they are dented up beaters with rotted away paint, worn and torn seats, smoky and mildew smells, bald tires...
A 94 Camry for $1200 is fine, new seat covers or junkyard seats, tires, minor top end work, and even a cheap macco paint job would get you a $2100 car that is better than a recent used money pit. You have to get it with room in your budget to spend at least $500 the first year shaking out the problems of the last owner.
I just went through this search for my daughters first college commuter. First target was early 90s Camry/Corolla. Nah, overpriced and gross is all I found. Next were Civics. Similar. Eventually found a clean car 11 years old for $2000, but I knew it needed plugs, some coils, valve cover gasket. $500 later i got a good, tuned, safe $2500 car with 110k miles that should be good for 2-4 years.
Finish price must be less than $1100/year or you may as well buy late model (or a new loss leader small S car) from a dealer.
1st owner does all maintenance under warranty
2nd owner does half the needed maintenance
      Auction then washes the car
3rd owner does 1/4 the needed maintenance
Auction then washes the car again
4th owner buys on time and gets repoed
Payday lot then washes the car and replaces the stolen radio
5th owner does no maintenance and regularly stores fast food rotting trash and soiled diapers in the car
      Repeat.
When you get into 10+ year old cars. Count the transfers. The more owners, the worse shape the car is in. If it has been at auction more than once, it is a DOG.

If you do roll the dice with a salvage title, MAKE SURE YOU GET PICTURES FROM THE ACCIDENT AND SEE WHAT WAS REPAIRED. You'll have a good idea of how severe the accident was and you could save thousands of dollars buying a salvage title vs a normal accident free car. One trick is to pop the hood before even starting the engine. Look to make sure everything is dead cold (pull the oil cap to make sure no vapor is present). If it's hot, chances are the owner got it going before you arrived, which could mean he's trying to hide hard start condition. Up north in colder climates, this is a trick that can save you some grief when dealing with older carby or diesel engines.

I have had extraordinarily good luck with some used vehicles and others caused major hair loss. Old pickup trucks were my go to eventually because they just seemed to be built for the long haul. A pre emissions Ford pickup with the 300 cubic inch inline "6"---4.9 litre has to be THE most reliable trouble free vehicles I've ever owned. Fuel mileage stinks, but that just hurts a little when you fill it up. An engine/transmission failure or suspension problems can break the bank in a rush. Old Chevy or OLD Dodge trucks likewise can go forever. And you can work on them YOURSELF. Don't have to be a genius. Parts plentiful and cheap.

So many people have an idea how to "buy a good used car" Cheapest is not always the best. I am a retired Master Service Adviser and Master Tech. As such the first things to ask and look for are: maintenance records, what part of country/climate-be wary of vehicles that come from the "rust belt" and along the coast by salt water, has it been garage kept?, who drove it? Older folks or a teenager (use your imagination on this), who did the maintenance? shade tree or pro?, higher end "luxury" cars can be a good value as their owners generally garage them and can afford to maintain them where a cheap lower end vehicle has a lesser chance of being maintained or garaged, how clean.. does it show "pride of ownership?" or is it filled with fast food wrappers and pet hair? Certainly have it inspected for major body damage, Car Fax if possible, recalls, etc. Good luck. Keep it up Scotty

In 1991 for $325 I bought a bright red 82 Carolla 4 door which had been in a wreck. The front tires tracked to the right 2-3 inches from normal. No grill or turn signals and the right side of the trunk was bashed in. I used a sledgehammer to knock out the side of the trunk and drove it for several months until I found a nice brown 2 door 80 Carolla. Then I bought a light blue 2 door 81 Carolla. Then a white one for parts. My OCD was showing. The Toyota 1.8 from the early 80’s is an impressive engine. They were replaced with an 86 B2000 in 1993. I moved to a suburb of St.Paul and had I think 5-6 1986 B2000’s. I think cars multiply when I get them.

It got so bad that the engine would actually FLOOD with oil and wouldn't start without 10 minutes of cranking and letting it rest. Thanks for the advice scotty. I wish i saw this before i bought my 04 lancer. Bought it for $2400 because i was desperate and i didnt want to let it go. Met the guy at night which is already no-no #1, guy didnt have any gas or fluids topped up. Needed new tires and an arm and joint replacement and also an oil change. The heater doesnt work bc the climate control gauge is stuck, the passenger door doesnt unlock with the key which tells me that he replaced the lock from another car and to make it all worse the car had 10k more miles than it was advertised to have (155k miles). So to help anyone who reads this first of all check your fluids first then get in the car and start pushing all the buttons make sure the climate control, cruise control, wipers and fluid squirter all work. Make sure the key works on all the locks, make sure the levers for the gas cap, trunk, and hood work. Dont buy a used car when you need it or you’ll be desperate and make dumb decisions and always. Always. Check the car out at night or if it must be during the evening bring a good flashlight to check out the exterior for scratches and dents.

In about 1992, I bought an '84 Chevy Citation. They were cheap because they were orphans. I did a little research on them, and the '84 and '85 fuel injected engines were the most trouble free. The TH125 automatic was the most trouble free auto trans available in those. My car had the 2.5L fuel injected engine and the TH 125 trans. Drove it until about 2014. It would not pass California smog testing, and I thought that it could be long and involved as it may have been a wiring problem. I paid $750 for it, and sold it to the state for $1500, under a "vehicle retirement program". All the years we drove it, it was the right age for parts at a pull your own parts wrecking yard, and new parts were cheap and plentiful. ie: $35 for a new power brake booster from Rockauto.

And size up the seller too. I bought a '99 Corolla in '05 with 11,000 miles on it from an old couple moving out of state...it was the wife's car and they had no family who wanted it. It is still in my fleet of three vehicles today with just about 45k on it and I never minded spending what little money it took to maintain it all these years including doing some of the PM myself. The AC quit $$$$ and the headliner is starting to fall, but it keeps going and going. I'm waiting for my 'ship to come in' so I can jettison it and the other jalopies for something a little newer. TIP: NEVER buy from a curbstoner. ALWAYS check and compare the title and ID of the seller. Be skeptical of stories about why the' owner of record' is not available.

We bought a 97 Avalon when our first daughter was born (needed A/C, and reliability). Got it for 1700 bucks. I may have fixed the headgaskets, cv joints, heater core (@%@% fu##!), and a few other things BUT....it made it 400,000 + miles before it literally just couldn't go anymore

    1) I agree with everything you said here Scotty. 2) How the hell did you get a 94 Celica for only $350? 3) To some people, it's not worth all the trouble to go through all this, and they'd rather just buy a new car to avoid the hassle/risks.

The Mercury Cougar was the Ford version of the Thunderbird not the Mustang. The Mercury version of the Mustang was the Mercury Capri.

The earlier years (67-73) of Cougar were based on the Mustang as Scotty said. From 74-76 the Cougar was based on the Mercury Montego/Ford Torino chassis. From 77-79 it indeed was the Mercury version of the Thunderbird. From 1980 and on, that and the T-Bird were just ugly junk.

The Capri was a completely different animal.

I bought a 1989 civic (my current daily driver) a few years ago with a destroyed fender (very cheap but ran good). Thought nothing of it until last year when it was in a fender bender (quarter panel banged up). That's when I found out the car was totaled a second time. Just because the title shows clean doesn't mean it's true. Do a vin search before purchase.

If you live in the UK an old Britsh car makes lots of sense. You can get a lot of parts for MG's and Triumphs , etc by return of post.
