    Steve, you just made me look like a hero in front of my wife here trying to figure out why the rototiller was revving so high. I agree with Sam here - I’ve learned so much from your great straight forward vids. Less head scratching and more time getting stuff done (meaning more time drink a beer or two at the end of the day). You rock, man. Thanks for what you do for us all.

I'm a idiot to this stuff. But did it with patience . I put a cleaned carb back on and it was revving at least 3500 rpm.. anyways Steve help and patience it's done...and it just started raining here in North Seattle.

    Usually you rotate the governor shaft in the same direction you push the governor lever. In this video Steve pushed the governor lever to the right to ensure no slop in the linkages in the WOT position. He then turned the governor shaft clockwise. When you are done you should be able to push the linkage and there should be no binding, you will feel spring resistance. If your binding, adjust the shaft in the opposite direction. Always check your manual for what your working on. If you get it wrong the engine will race-shut it down immediately!!!

    My Briggs 3hp mower will surge in rpms while mowing. When you stop the forward motion and pull to backup. It’s odd and has done periodically but last time it was most of the mowing job. But I don't think many people out there understand the importance, OBVIOUSLY if you can understand him, and most do, I am talking about the ones that think it's ok to give it a tweek. And let her roar. I need more speed on the wood splitter, or I need more pressure on the power washer.

      I'm not trying to be an ass here, and I hope I'm not taken that way, but I have no idea what it does. I'm taking a stab after watching the vid and saying it's like a RPM limiter. I've just started working on small engines and Steve's vids have helped me big time! I've gotten 2 weed eaters and 2 lawnmowers running and I'm working on my riding mower with the information I've gotten from here.

    • @larryfine4498
      @larryfine4498 5 лет назад

      @@kemobam The governor controls the maximum rpms on all 4 cycle small engines. I won't get in to the specifics, but it uses mechanical feedback from the engine to adjust the throttle valve and keep the engine rpm at a factory specified level for that engine.

    • @dalemcinnes1834
      @dalemcinnes1834 4 года назад +2

      A governor is useful also in keeping the engine at a constant speed. If your throttle is set wide open and it comes under load and then slows down the engine the governor will then open the throttle more to give the engine more power and then when the engine starts to speed up it will reduce the throttle until the engine reaches maximum speed again. Basically it works to keep your engine at a constant speed.

    I had an issue where the gc160 pressure washer would turn off after about 10 minutes of run time and also die out after i squeezed the trigger. I cleaned the carbuetor, changed the spark plug and gapped it to factory specifications, and changed the oil. When i turned it on it went to maximum rpms when i turned the choke off, so i turned it off quickly so it wont explode 🤯. Adjusting the idle screw and pin inside stopped the high rpms and adjusted it back to normal settings. But my pressure washer still turned off everytime after applying the trigger with water. Turns out my fuel was bad, it was dark yellow and i replaced it with a full tank of fresh gas which technically was the same color but less yellow and smelled more gaseous. And the gc160 engine idle is the opposite of this model but the same directions, you pull the idle arm back and loosen the screw, then while holding the arm back you turn the pin clockwise or towards the front of the pressure washer. Then tighten the nut while holding the arm back still, once the nut is tight then its done. But my main fix was the bad fuel and the idle adjustment after the carburetor cleaning. Spark plug and oil was all from 2011, and its 2024! If i had fresh gas from the start the plug and oil would still be going 😂
    -Thanks steve you have helped me fix more than pressure washers by the way

    Brilliant Steve, thanks a million. I applied your method to a Homelite HL454SP mower which had a screaming over-revving problem, over here in the U.K. Amazingly, it did not cure it. But you had given me the confidence that I'd set the lever arm correctly. It made me look elsewhere. Eventually I spotted that a sharp edge of the control arm was fouling the PVC sheath of the throttle/choke control cable. I used a cable tie to re-route this cable well clear. Great, docile running again. But I could not have done it without you. The manual was useless. This problem makes me think. On some machines, cables flap about all over the place and doubtless can cause a variety of problems when they foul controls. Have you found that? And do owners try to tie them down, provoking further trouble? I imagine many mowers have hit the garbage dump because of this. Is there scope for a RUclips video on taming the control cable snakes?

I don't want to over-rev but I do want to operate at the top power curve hp. under load It's a mud motor long tail set up. Since this is a very common motor series and the gov. set up seems the same for the whole series is it too much to ask for a video on how to set the gov and speed to achieve max hp under load? You could probably borrow one they are very common. Lots of people want to know this on youtube lthey want to go faster safely. thanks, I just subbed.

    I’m surprised you don’t need to scrape the old gasket sealer off more. I would have wasted a lot of time picking away cleaning the old material off. Great videos. Chief out

    Man you saved my life. My foolish uncle started messing around the engine without even looking up what might be the cause of problems. Now I have to repair it after his "repairs". I owe you a pint of good beer

    my carb air filter housing on lawn mover ("OHV") air filter fell off and gotten mulched DUH!, so I stripped off a HONDA (OHV looked similar) CEMENT VIBRATOR carb and airfilter and the engine studs (as they needed to be longer) and I then chucked away the OHV lawn mower carb over the neigbour's fence so his mower will explode, hahaha, now with the Honda carb I have a choke on the grey slider, cool, and a petrol on/off that I didnt have before, I don't need the effing choke cable up the handle anymore BUT the engine really didn't like me doing this change over, so I am resetting the governer as per your amazing clip THANKS DUDE FROM THAILAND and I'm gonna use the redundant choke cable as kind of engine speed control , maybe, but shit these whole arrang,memts, incompatible air filters, longer engine studs, eeny meeny stupid springs, (crap to get out the carb studs too) etc etc and I burned my fingers, tiny springs flying all over the grass, see-saw governer moving 2 degress from zero to MAX (WTF who designs this crap) oh I had enough of this sh/1t over here, too hot (over 100F) to think, but it's all I got, I need my John Deere yanmar back - please God or Buddha or anyone ....help....

  • @Sterdogg9891

    My gc160 governor pin is in the horizontal position after turning clockwise. So It may need to be in the vertical position, because it runs high

    Hey Steve, thx for the video but do you have one for the GX120? Mine revs to the moon and before she blows upon I had to shut it down and put a zap strap on it to hold it in a lower revving rpm.,

    Hey Steve I need your help brother....I just rebuilt a gc160 and everything is how it's supposed to be but its got really high rpms. I can adjust the governor EXACTLY how your supposed to and it does nothing to help. It feels like I need to be able to turn the governor shaft more but it stops
