I love your videos, for me they just do the trick. Having so much joy learning sax, thanks to u! Also jam videos like this are giving such a relaxed and respectful vibe, it really is fun playing together
Hey Nigel. Love these jam-style videos. Thanks for keeping the theory out of them. I love learning the theory but have a tendency to nerd out and overthink things. These vids make me play and listen. My favourite is to put them on the headphones and turn the screen off. Thanks again from a long-time Fremantle resident now living in France (so if you need me to give Jay Metcalfe a hard time for you, let me know - I'm not too far away) :) Cheers. Geoff.
Yes, indeed. Thank you, that was excellent. You had me actually making music right away -- and had me realizing that with just a few notes and simple lines and rythmic variety, I can create a pleasing and interesting sound & melody, without having to 'learn to play every kind of scale in all 12 keys and at any tempo'....at least not yet! You're a genuine *teacher* -- which I've found is rather rare in the jazz world.
I don't think I'm ready for this exercise yet but I will save it for later. I'm just getting started and my first lesson starts next week but thank you for some of the intro tips you have graciously posted..
Hey Nigel - I just came across your video for absolute beginners which I am. I'm waiting for my sax to be delivered and I really like your style! I'm definitely tuning in and looking forward to learning and playing. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks and congrats on your new sax. Have fun with it - plenty of things on my channel to get you started including our new “Beginners QuickStart” series: ruclips.net/video/FTMMcrkp5Jc/видео.htmlsi=WJsqLE2Ua-VJdK7S
Cheers. I'm a huge Ben Webster fan too! We cover one of his amazing solos inside Sax School "I Got It Bad". That lesson series is super popular with our members.
Playlisted for my next Sax exercise, (which will be this afternoon) thanks for sharing Your wisdom! To answer Your question, which kind of Jazz do You like most? I like Lounge Jazz and Smooth Jazz. Since some Years I like cigars and there is lot of this kind of Jazz played in cigar lounges. Over the Years, I fell in love with that kind of relaxing music. Maybe that's the reason why I finally started practicing saxophone (last Year, aging 46), although I always was fascinated by this Instrument since my childhood.
Thanks to bands that played in Denver stop overs from the east coast to the west coast..Glenn Miller's band getting down at the University of Colorad in Boulder.while visiting his girl. Big bands, jazz and blues giants. I continue to do so, living in Los Angeles /Hollywood area I have had the jazz music world at my doorsteps. Having the chance of meeting and chatting. They be willing on breaks. "Solid Man,Solid"'..
I'm just discovering 'Improvisation in my lessons and am surprised (now I'm over the original embarrassment of 'making up' a tune ad lib ) how much I enjoy Improv. so will be trying this Jam out. - Sonny Rollins is my favourite player - St Thomas is my no. 1. - I've also got 'Bunny' stuck in my head by Gerry Mulligan/Johnny Hodges - great melodic tune. I currently play an Elkhart Alto but keen to get a good Yamaha Tenor 32 or 62 as I love the Tenor warm sound.
Great question - you can use either Eb Alto or Bb Tenor sax with our lessons and courses at Sax School. Check out this article to help you choose: saxschoolonline.com/articles/alto-vs-tenor-saxophone-which-is-best-to-start-learning/
Absolutely love your lessons but, as an absolute beginner, I find it very confusing at times and I wish you would have lessons purely for tenor or alto.
Jazz is a language, learning a language takes a lot of time, spanish, japaneese, german... Do you imagine a youtube channel helping you to speak a new language? Don't dream, you need a teacher, and hours and hours of practicing. There is miracle method. Great or little teacher , it is the pupil who learns, and work day after day. If you don'd hear and understand the melody, if you don't know your scales, if you have no Jazz culture, be patient. Everybody is fan here... and is wrong. No video can replace a teacher that listen to you note after note, give you some home work for the week and check out you progress, if there are.
Ok. Perhaps get started with some of my other lessons first. I have a Tool Kit lesson bundle which is great for beginners and free from my site here: saxschoolonline.com/courses/

Great lesson. So much fun. Like mainstream jazz from the 40-60 ties. Ben Webster is my nr 1.

My favorite is the blues
I like it. Have to get to it.
How do you bend the notes so well? That’s the part I’m having trouble mastering when improvising.
Thanks Nigel, it's great to jam along. Do you know any "protest Jazz"? probably not... it's a genre I'm working on.
What mouthpiece set up are you using? It sounds wonderful.
Awesome
Cheers!
I want to buy a saxophone, what tuning do I need for your classes, Bb or Eb

I wish I was still shut in so I could be home playing!
Ha!
That was the best part of the lock down
What is the instrumental song in the background brother
I love Dixieland
Cool! Dixie is a great style and actually I think a brilliant gateway to improvising too. Which artists do you prefer?
@@McGillMusicSaxSchool I like Tuba Skinny
Sorry for this but I'm a bit confused by the box going over the 4 bar exercise, do i play like 3 extra notes in each bar ? thanks
