Man! I came across that trick accidentally while struggling for years to play the main melody of the song Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran in E. It has this sequence at the end of the phrase: F#-G#-C#-E (low C# that is) It has been impossible to jump down from low G# to low C#, and one fine day by sheer accident my fingers flipped on that position and boy!!! 😍 Thank you for pointing out this really useful use
As a beginner, on tenor saxophone, 7 months in, and 72 years of age having previously been a jazz drummer, this is enlightening, very interesting and informative. Thank you.
So, one of the songs I enjoy playing is Summertime. On tenor sax, there is a D to C# note transition. I could never play it smoothly enough until you shared this hack. Thank you!
Is just brilliant trick with c#. Is a bit heavy to keep it press all the time and requires me to adjust wrist as I play an old (beautiful) Yani T880. Many thanks again Joel
Thanks! Try experimenting with slight adjustments to you hand position, making as much surface area contact with the key as you can, and keeping a loose, relaxed wrist. Also, you can release it when not required, particularly in left hand fingerings where it can feel a little more awkward. Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼
Very interesting lesson. Thanks. A bit of a non-sequitor (but to me important) question. You are not using a neck strap at all in this video. How are you supporting the Tenor? I have a bad back and however you are doing it might potentially help.
Thanks! The support is something I designed myself with an engineer friend many years ago after a back injury. Unfortunately it’s very bespoke to my horn and not easily replicable, otherwise I’d be a millionaire by now!! Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼

Mis respetos para UD.
Playing 56 years and learned something new and useful today. Never used the C# key that way before. Thanks!
No problem! 👍🏼
My fun key hack is to hold all the keys down for low or middle D then lift my first and second finger left hand to trill from D to C#
Nice! 👍🏼

Splendid discussion and illustration, Joel! Thanks!
No problem! 👍🏼
Fantastic lesson and I enjoyed your soloing throughout -- great tone.
Thanks! Much appreciated. 👍🏼
Excellent 🎉
Super Especial
What is that small piece attached to the bell for?
Whoa! That C# key is amazing. Never knew that.
Thanks! 👍🏼
Awesome tip! Thank you very much!
Really great tips! Thank you🎵
No problem! 👍🏼
Your sound is very beautiful! What a tenor should sound!!
Thanks! Very kind. 👍🏼
that was a great hint - thanks very much Joel
Thanks Joel.
Have you had a mod done to your bottom Bb key? If so who did the mod?
It’s in Oleg Low Bb Extension. 👍🏼

Make sure you are not using left hand to carry weigh of the horn! Strap & right thumb for stability. Left hand should be free with no tension!!!

Here is one video from McGill, there is one model, a little bit like Joels system. ruclips.net/video/-OmNXokTD_0/видео.html
Great video! What is connected to your sax? It's around the Bb pad about halfway up to the bell? Looks red and some type of metal.
Thanks! It’s a stand I made! 👍🏼
Any chance of getting pictures of it so I can make my own?@@JoelPurnell
nice hack!
Thank you for the video! Out of curiosity, were you using a Bois ligature? Thanks!
Thanks! No, it’s a prototype of a new lig called the ‘Orbit’. 👍🏼
@@JoelPurnellyour vids are a great discovery for me. I love your sound, can I ask what mouthpiece you're playing on this clip?
@@chrisnielson3761Thanks! It’s an Otto Link 7*. 👍🏼

@@JoelPurnell could youu please tell me what mouthpiece do you play here ?
@@patam-patamit’s an Otto Link 7*. 👍🏼
Nice even sound. Do you play a Selmer? One of my bari saxes is an old Buescher, without the g# c# transfer. The other bari has it.
Best Wishes!
Thanks! Yes 1965 MkVI. If you know a good instrument technician, it can often be added if you really want it. Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼
How have I never heard of this Blues scale? Happy Thursday Day Owl
🦉
But I’ve been playing 56 years and used the C#G# but the low C# scale hack never occurred to me
Glad to bring you something new then!! Best wishes. Joel. 👍🏼
I forgot that thank you.
What is your sax support ?
Hi. The support is something I designed myself with an engineer friend many years ago after a back injury.. 👍🏼
