This is why Dexter is one of my favorite tenor players; his note choices and phrases land perfectly, always sound interesting, but also, somehow inevitable, like nothing else would have fit in the moment. When you analyze his playing, he simply and elegantly plays beautiful lines, respecting the chords. Scott Hamilton carries on this approach nicely, but with fewer quotes. Good video - cheers!
"The Scale Is not The Chord" What an important and shocking foundational teaching tip!! I've played for too long without a proper understanding of the chord / scale / licks relationships so I signed up for your Patreon because your method definitely speaks to me. I was scratching my head when I saw the Bb in the D minor scale @6:15 but a light bulb went ON when you explained it. I then too a look at the full PDF and now I'm super excited to apply this! Take my money bro! TY!!

@@johnsweenie ok, then play it without. The general key is Dm the parallel of F major. Making the Dm the tonic. So I think you should check again. Just me saying. I'm pretty sure there is a Bb in that particular Dm scale, but you can play whatever you want.
@ there is a Bb in the parallel minor (aeolian mode) of F. But no jazz improviser would ever use that mode improvising over a Dm7. It’s Dorian pretty much all the time. Theory is secondary to accepted practice
@jsweenie13 what would you then play over the Em A7 in a Cmaj progression? Em Dorian and A mixolydian? Again it's ok to play the sound you like over the chords you like. All good with me. But that Dm7 Chord is the parallel of F major, and the first step is to play d arolian on it. What ever extensions you choose to play is also good. You can play melodic minor, or even play Ab7 on it going into that Gm7 chord. D diminished scale half whole would fit too. Lots of options. I do not believe in ruling anything out, but directly saying there is no Bb in the Dm chord and scale of blue bossa is not true.
Soren, ALWAYS look forward to your videos! You never fail to connect application with information. You're a great teacher, brother. Be well, my friend.
For this tune in d minor, I have found that a G7th works very well in bar 8- this will lead you directly into the key of E flat, or C minor- the soloist can play a C minor over the chord F minor very well, on bar 9- the soloist is on the tonic, while the chord is a subdominant-

There’s no Bb in that scale. It’s almost always Dorian mode for minor 7 scales not the natural minor.

These are the small details that gives interesting tone material - change a few notes and you get different sounds.
learn chord tones, scales, use a metronome, and remember music is melody, harmony, & rhythm.
True true and true
And dynamic 🎉
