  • Perhaps you want a good daily driver, something with decent fuel economy, and yet still a hardy adventure-ready vehicle. If so, we believe the 1st gen Toyota Highlander might be the perfect choice for you. Crossovers get frequently overlooked as overlanding platforms yet for most people, provide all the capability they need and prove to be much more practical for everyday use when compared to body-on-frame 4x4's. This 2007 Highlander is our new overland project. We hope you enjoy it as Laiken introduces it as our next build and upcoming videos in our "Crossoverlanding" series. This is a truly underrated suv for camping.

Excellent choice. Late Gen 1 Highlanders with the 3.3L engine are terrific vehicles. Reliable as gravity. Our 2005 AWD with the 3.3l V6 is almost identical with a few less miles. Love the snow button. The vehicle is amazing on snow, ice, and rain, especially heavy rain. The stability control has to be experienced to be believed.
The 3.3L is a better engine than the 3.5L, it avoids two major issues - it doesn't have the VVT oil line or the oil cooler line, either of which has a rubber section that can rupture and leave you with no oil in the engine in seconds. There are upgrade kits that can be installed. The oil cooler line is relatively easy, the VVT line ... isn't.
Ours had two problems - both of which were caught during routine preventative maintainance: It needed a water pump at 110k miles (Pink stuff visible from evaporated coolant) and a front valve cover gasket at 187K miles. The rotors are subject to distortion if the lug nuts are significantly over torqued. The required torque is 76 lb-ft. If some idiot installs them with an air wrench that has more torque than a cordless ratchet, they will almost certainly be over torqued.

New subscriber. So happy to see all the positive comments about the first generation Highlander. Last year (2021) we bought a 2006 Limited V6 "grandpa" car with just 69k miles and ALL the bells & whistles .Cost us $9k but it runs and drives like new. We immediately changed the timing belt and water pump to avoid any surprises in that area. Upgraded the stock JBL stereo to a Pioneer blue tooth model. This one has the 3rd row seat with remote heater - two features we will never use. I say "grandpa" car because while the leather interior is perfect the exterior indicates that "grandpa" should have quit driving years ago - plenty of dings and dents and scuffs and scrapes but nothing major. Recently replaced the outboard O2 sensor (code P0037) which cost $250. While not as "zippy" as our 2012 V6 Rav4 the ride and braking are far superior. Hoping to get 250k miles out of it as others have reported. Presently has 73k miles on it. Definitely following your Crossoverlanding adventures!

Hey I have a 2007 highlander as well but with the 2.4 4 cylinder and awd, the ect snow mode stands for electronically controlled transmission for snow, it basically puts your gearing into second first so you’re less likely to slip as you have more traction in higher gears and it also shifts into higher gears more so then regular driving as you have lees torque, therefore less chance of slipping. The awd just kicks on automatically when it feels slippage so the button doesn’t have much to do with the system but definitely helps for sure! Great video by the way!

I just picked up a 2007 Highlander 2WD 4 cylinder model. My other cars are 5 series BMW's but I'm amazed at the simplicity and ride of this little gem. 1st order of business, detail her in and out including the engine bay, valve cover gasket, cabin air filter, and a trailer hitch, then a bit later....tires. Still researching on which tire to put on her as I'm looking for a bit of a off-road tread yet quiet on the highway. Don't know if that's possible.

I truly enjoy how direct simple and straightforward your approach and assessments. I hope to pick your collective brain. I own a 2008 Sequoia, and I think it's the single cause of global warming lol 😆. I have been considering down sizing just a little. The Highland and yep the Nissan xterra are the two I am reflecting on. Both about the same size. Looking to improve my MPG, keep basic off road and bad weather capabilities. No major towing requirements. Some road trips, plus it will be daily driver...the Sequoia gen 2 is a monster. It belongs in a Jurassic Park Movie. MPG is ugly. Plus I have it lifted, 35s on 20s didn't help. Daily driver, road trips, basic bad weather and off road capabilities, reliable and cost effective, roomy enough for a full size man 6ft 2 240lbs.
    Lead me to water please...

if you are talking about the temperature control turny knob not working that is a common issue on these. If you pull off the knob you will see a nut that holds the turner. That nut often comes loose and it ends up breaking off the wire connecting to it behind it. I just fixed mine myself. There are videos that show you how to fix it if you look up highlander temperature control broke or something like that. If that was the problem and you fix it, put some locktite or superglue on the nut before you tighten it back on so it doesnt break again

Hi Guys,I recently bought Toyota Highlander Limited 2005 V6 3.3 ,but FWD and I am wondering if anyone has an experience with that car on the snow.I have all-season tires so far and live in the mountains..thus it would be great to know how it works on the snowy roads😅

Are you going to stealth camp in it while on road trips? Is there enough room to fit some sort of mattress and sleeping bags?

For me at 5’11” I think it’s a little too short to sleep comfortably unless you built an extension platform.

You guys gained lot of subscribers since last time I saw your video! Is it still too cold for more overlanding videos?

The cold here in northern Utah definitely makes it a lot more challenging and frankly we’ve been in a really busy time of our lives recently. We’re hoping to have more trip videos very soon.

Any thoughts on a 2005 highlander vs 2005 honda pilot?

    • @TheFraziers
      @TheFraziers  3 года назад +2

They’re going to be really similar. I believe the pilot will be a little more spacious but I’ve heard a significant amount of reports of transmission failure in the first gen Pilots. I’d take the highlander over the pilot every time.

The Pilot seems to be a capable little off roader, at least from the videos posted by hondapilotoverland in which it's lifted with chunky tires, how do you think the Highlander compares?

Honda is an Interference Engine, Toyota is not. Get the Toyota 👍
