Oriflamme Canyon: We send a Passport, Outback Wilderness & Highlander up a ROUGH TRAIL!

  • First of all, all these AWD vehicles are MODIFIED! A stock AWD with the same driving skill will NOT perform as well. Please drive responsibly!
    This trail is called "Oriflamme Canyon". It's located in Julian, California (USA) and is rated as a moderately difficult 4WD trail, but because of the current trail conditions, it would probably rate between moderate/difficult. This means that it is difficult/severe for AWD.
    WHAT A PERFECT PLACE TO SEND UP 3 MODIFIED AWDs!!!
    I know a lot of people are wondering how a Subaru Outback Wilderness really performs, and this video will answer many questions. Is the Wilderness just a XT with plastic trim? For those that don't know, the Outback Wilderness goes from a 13.3:1 crawl ratio to a 14.3 crawl ratio. Not only is it geared better to climb, but the torque converter is beefed up to not stall as easily when stressed. The suspension is also reworked with longer springs and struts, which allows for more wheel articulation. Will this be enough to tackle this rough trail???
    SUBARU OUTBACK WILDERNESS
    Driver: Jason O. (has been wheeling since he was 16 years old)
    Instagram: @iluvdrt
    Modifications: 2 inch ADF lift, Primitive Skid Plates, Deleted front and rear sway bars
    Tires: Yokohama G015 (stock equipment)
    - - -
    We also have a 3rd gen Toyota Highlander (2014 to 2016), that has an on demand AWD system that splits wheel torque 50/50 via clutch packs when wheel slip is detected (or when the AWD lock button is engaged). The Highlander is powered by a 3.5L V6 gas engine and has a real 6 speed automatic transmission.

      I think so. With careful wheel placement you should make it through unscathed. Depending on the year of your Sequoia, you'll have either a Solid Rear Axle or Rear independent suspension. A SRA would be the best case scenario for increased wheel articulation, but either the case, a low gear transfer case (better gearing and mechanically locked torque front/rear will be helpful attributes to get through a trail like this.

    Thanks for this. I didn’t know I wanted to get into off-roading but I did want a car to “get away” from everyone and camp in. I then saw the OBW online and I fell in love. Only had to wait a month for it as a special order buyer bailed. They treated me kindly and drive off lot the same day.
    I know OBW is not a true off-road car but it seems to do many things well enough and I’ve had fun going up to Santiago from both Silverado and Ortega. Steve did well! Just note that he is probably has the most driving skill out of the group, and he fabricates a lot of the modifications on his Highlander. He made his own bash corner plates, and disconnects both his front and rear sway bar. Both the Highlander and Subaru Outback wilderness used momentum, and that takes huge amount of skill and confidence. A mistake while using momentum can lead to vehicle break down, so something to keep in mind.
      It’s your money, and I want to help you make the best decision with it. For those that aren’t familiar with off roading, slow is a showcase of vehicle capability and fast is a showcase of driver skill/determination. Line choice is a display of skill at either speed. There’s a huge “toyota tax” so if you want a dedicated off-roader with 4 low, you save money by going with Nissan, Ford, Chevy, old Jeeps, etc.

Trails offroad rates it a 4 out of 10, which is really 4 out of 7, since levels 8,9 and 10 are extreme are reserved for tube buggies. A moderate 4WD trail ends up being difficult to severe for AWD. Wheel articulation, gearing, and traction aids really help a lot. Steve in the Highlander has quick disconnect sway bar end links. I actually ordered a pair.

    Tyres are 90% of the battle. I’ve been in some high difficulty trails in my outback, but most of ours here seem to be based on steep incline and low traction, not a large amount of left/articulation and ditches. I might been a lift kit and torq locker for that kind of thing, already got decent ground clearance at 9.2 but bumper approach angle leaves more to be desired and can scrape easily, as does rear bumper.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 года назад

      It depends on what vehicle you're driving. For example, in deep sand, my 2015 Forester XT would bog down and get stuck if I wasn't at 15 PSI, in my Passport I could drive in deep sand at 35 PSI. A stock 4runner TRD Off-road with Highway terrains would, in many cases, get further than my Passport. IMO, tires in snow would be very important. I wouldn't say 90% of a difference, but it would be up there.

  • @peterandrewj

    I liked the Passport: 4 inches of lift added, rear sway bars disconnected, but a couple times I thought it was going to roll. The mods are necessary but driving skills are everything. The AWD unibody vehicles looked like they took a beating from the dependency on momentum...probably can't use them on "tough" trails too often. I think a novice like me would be safer in a 4runner with KDSS.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 года назад +2

      I get out on a lot of adventures and I've seen so many people roll their vehicles, especially body on frames due to a false sense of security. I had one guy I mentored that drove a 4runner that got ahead of himself and rolled on a steep downhill obstacle (not my trip). You're right about momentum, even with lots of experience you can see the outcome. Many people commenting don't understand that, which is kind of scary. They see momentum speed as equaling "Easy", which is the exact opposite.

    Really cool video and awesome rigs. I really think the lack of a low gear range is what hurts these crossovers on tough obstacles. I wonder if for example Honda could do something like add a super low 1st gear that is engaged in an offroad setting only and ignored for regular street driving. That would be a pretty cool compromise.

    • @paulb5390
      @paulb5390 2 года назад

      Their biggest problem is a lack of a true 4x4 system. Next is ground clearance. That Passport is lifted 3.5 inches and still has almost 3" less ground clearance than a base Jeep Wrangler

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 года назад

      @@paulb5390 I actually observe "wheel articulation" as being the single most limiting factor of my Passport. The 20.4:1 crawl ratio makes up for the lack of a low gear T-case (a 100 series Land Cruiser for example, is only geared 30:1) and the higher tech transfer unit in my Passport can almost have it perform like a T-case, but it's not a true locked center diff. The lack of wheel articulation really holds my vehicle back, even though it's flexier than many other AWDs, it's still not good enough. The lack of flex is awesome for on-road though.
      my 3.5" Passport has 12" of ground clearance at the front skid plate and rear diff. A stock jeep wrangler has 10.8", which is impressive for a stock vehicle, but it's not 3" less minimum ground clearance, at least not at the center line. I'm actually putting together an impromtu "maximum ground clearance" video, about the ground clearance at the rocker panels. My Passport has 15-3/4" and a Jeep Wrangler may very well have be 3 more than that. A stock 4runner is at 17" at the rocker panel.

      smoothies, the Passport does have the low 4,71:1 1st gear with a 4.334 differential. In the Jeep Renegade trailhawk, they call that 4 low. But it would be cool to see it brought down even lower. heck, I'd like to just take a real T-case like in the Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. The gearing is truly impressive at 56:1.

      Yeah, with the exception of AWDFAM, I don't see any other vehicles putting the OBW to the test. There's some guy driving through watery mud which isn't much of a test. In this video, rocky shelves are being driven up. I use to run the G015s on my 2015 Forester, they aren't nearly as grippy as the Hankook Dynapro ATMs I ran. I love my Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on my Passport. In some cases though, it's not the tires that hold the OBW back but rather the CVT, but when more momentum has to be used to overcome something, tires now definitely play a bigger part. Jason is a stud though, he can drive. He has 25 years of wheeling experience, 9 out of 10, anyone else in an outback wilderness isn't doing as good as him.

I just relied on the the mechanical advantages. You can actually buy a Passport Sport AWD for a little cheaper than a Rav4 trail. A lot of car reviewers don’t understand how iVTM4 works. Its two part. The twin clutch AWD system (different than more simpler Rav4 system) Is always on, but the traction control system is similar to the 4Runners A-TRAC, it only operates at lower RPMs. Rev your engine and “send it” like in most AWD’s and traction control won’t work. Thanks! We had an overlanding trip that included 20+ vehicles. The 5 of us in this video just happened to be the ones up for this rough trail. In other words, I have no control over what vehicles go 😃.
      So, I thought the Outback wilderness would be geared just like the ascent at 14.6:1, but it turns out Subaru reconfigured the CVT to have a more aggressive gear ratio in the OBW and it’s at 15.5:1. The OBW would be better suited because it has more minimum ground clearance, but also more maximum ground clearance. A stock OBW has 11.5” of side clearance. This clearance helps get through rocky terrain. This is the clearance that lines up with the tires. A Subaru Ascent has 9” of side sill clearance.
      This is a rough trail, so the 2” lifted OBW you see in this video has 13.5” of side sill clearance. You can modify an ascent to have 11”, but not sure if that would be enough for a trail like this. Also, note that the OBW in this video has both front/rear sway bar deleted and has over 25 years of wheeling experience. This is not a trail I would recommend for any stock AWD vehicle. I hope that answers your question 😃

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring I honestly never knew they had an awd lock to keep it 50/50. Wonder how close it is to single level x mode? Anything with v6 and real trans has potential.

    What’s the next off road vehicle you have in mind? Another Honda? At some point all good things must come to an end.

      After 2 years 7 months, I still love the Honda. It’s my daily, and a good one at that, even with all the gear I throw on it. The Wife and I are spontaneous people, so it’s nice to always be ready for adventure (and the daily drive).

      this was much more difficult than I could have imagined. According to Jason, this was the worst he has seen the trail. Back almost 3 years ago, there were many Subarus that got through this trail. I didn't get it on video (because my Go Pro kept overheating), but there's a section that I totally bashed my muffler on, haha! it's okay, my ground clearance went up 12" to 12.25" hahaha

    When you think about it, what is the purpose of a low gears/transfer case anyways? It made sense in 1995, when my Toy had 118hp or my Jeep Cherokee with maybe 120hp . Now, most of these are tickling 300hp. With a lift, skid plates and good tires, no reason they cannot go anywhere you want, especially if you can lock all four wheels.

    Another question that came to mind as I read the specs of the vehicle is: What do you think of the differences between the "trail tires" (Geolander G015, Wildpeak Trail, BFG Trail Terran T/A) vs the "real all terrain" tires (Wildpeak AT3w, BFG Ko2). Especially when this is applied to the conditions we have in socal (dry, rocky, loose and loose over packed). From the video, it doesn't seem like there is significant difference in their performance. But how has your experiences in the real world been when wheeling with other folks that use these? there must be a reason why you run a "real AT" right? The trail tires seem to be nice since they are usually much lighter than their "real AT" counterpart.

      That’s a good question. First of all you can see two different type of driving styles. I crawled it similar to the 4WDs, but since I don’t have their wheel articulation, I’d lose traction and would have to “bump” it. I drive like this to reduce trail damage and stress on my vehicle. It’s paid off, 86K miles and nothing has broke.
      When more momentum is used, less grip is needed, but as you can see, there are some obstacles that will kill momentum.
      I actually have experience with the G015 and Cooper discovery AT3W. There’s a substantial difference with the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on Rock, Ice, and Rain.

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring That makes sense. I guess there is no such thing as free lunch, more grip = more weight. Thank you for being so diligent in answering these questions. Just found your channel and you have some of the most interesting content with regards to CUV + Overlanding. Cheers.

    What sort of disconnects does the Highlander run? Or are they just disconnected via the swaybar links?

    Subaru approach angle are So Bad, just good for light off-roading. Subaru is the worst of the 3 vehicles. Ford Bronco would have outclassed all of these vehicles. Nice video man love it!

    Looks like as long as a vehicle has AWD, tires and good ground clearance (and driver mod in some occasions) it can handle some good trails. 👍

      That’s another thing to mention. The Outback wilderness and Highlander were both running the Yokohama G015, which is a light trail tire more suited for highway driving. These guys would do even better with the tires I have.
      I’d do better with disconnecting my front sway bar. I’m working on a solution now 😃

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring do you think adding a solid front strut bar will compensate for the sway bar being eliminated? Get more articulation on the trails without the front sway bar but still having some road handling from the strut bar?
