    11-15-2020: It was another Spontaneous trip! I had to work about 60 miles north from where I live, and my client just happened to live about 25 miles away from Gorman / Hungry Valley SVRA! **This means that this turns out to be the 4th installment of my vehicle comparisons between Off-road oriented crossovers and dedicated body on frame SUV's/Trucks. This time around we have a total of 9 vehicles and the AWDs are out numbered 7 to 2. We have my 2019 Honda Passport AWD, a 3rd gen Volkswagen Touareg V6 AWD Turbo diesel, a 90's Chevy Suburban 4WD, 3rd gen Pathfinder 4WD, a 2nd gen Honda Passport 4WD (aka Isuzu Rodeo), a Lexus GX 470 full time 4WD, a Toyota Sequoia 4WD, a Jeep Wrangler 2.0 Turbo 4WD and a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. What a line up!
    In this episode we spend time at the 4x4 Practice area and some of the brave few drive "UP" the black diamond Pronghorn trail!

    I overland a 2004 GMC Yukon XL. I think it is the bomb. I’ve done trails in Moab and Ouray on 33” and a 2” leveling lift no problem. Added bonus is I can sleep inside, off the ground, and without the expense of a RTT. They truly are overlooked and very capable for cheap money. Great tow rig as well if pulling a trailer. Jeep boys don’t like seeing me on the trails, so added bonus there. I’ll save $60K and enjoy many of the same experiences for cheap.

    Hey Jon been watching your vids for a while and I love your content! I have a 2019 Honda Passport EX-L AWD STOCK and been towing a 2k pound boat/trailer since I've purchased my car. Its been an absolute beast in daily driving and towing a medium sized lake fishing boat weekly. Recently my friends and I went to Monache Meadows to camp and we had no idea about offroading and overlanding and had no idea about the trail difficulty except that it was considered easy to moderate (later found out that it was easy/moderate for 4x4 standards) We couldn't make it past that one area where you decided to take the left route (optional route). I didn't even attempt it because this was my first time doing a trail like this and my car being stock so we just camped there. But after that trip it kind of sparked an interest for me to mod my car a little to make it more capable. Is there any lift and or tire change I can do without having to take out a weld in my car or removing a part of my car to fit tires on? Thanks!

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 года назад +1

      Hey Joe! Thanks for stopping by. So, I have a specific video about what tires you can fit on a Passport/Pilot/Ridgeline. The tallest tire would be 30.5” without trimming. You’ll get slight rub, but nothing that I think should stop you from running this tire size. The rub is only at 90% lock and it’s not extreme. So, I have an AWD off-road database for crossovers. I rate the Monache meadows as difficult for AWD. You should have over 10 inches of ground clearance. About lift kits, look up Traxda, they offer up to a 3.5” lift kit. Jsport sucks and Truxx isn’t bad, but the front spacers don’t have a camber adjustment. Right now I have the 2 inch Traxda lift kit.

    The drivers of the GX's really made the vehicle look bad, that's unfortunate. They need to better understand the fundamentals of off-road driving. Just goes to show you how much of it is dependent on the driver and his/her abilities or lack thereof. Loved seeing the older Passport/Rodeo.

    Left foot locker is always a good skill to have and I use it often in my jeep which is also locked in the rear, alot of people don't know if this or care to practice..it's a very handy technique to know in rapidly changing terrain( lots of fast drops and climbs for the tires and suspension to contend with constantly on both sides at lower speeds) snow

Tows my 21 foot center console 5200lb with trailer and tows with ease. The value you get for a used one is amazing, The sticker MSRP was 63k and I picked it up used for 19k with 71,000 miles. Touaregs are off road sleepers. Real full time AWD(not part time like most suvs), durable suspension, and even though the newer ones lack a locking rear diff, they still have an LSD in the rear which works wonders. Combine that with good tires and the TDi engine and it will get you anywhere.

    I personally had the choice of a later run 2010 T2 or the 2012 T3 I bought off the dieselgate buyback and chose the T3. Yeah the T2 had a low range transfer case but the 8 speed in the T3 has good low end gearing in the transmission compared to the 6 speed in the T2 especially when combined with over 400 ft-lbs. Dropping that low range also dropped like 500 pounds of weight so day to day the T3 is much better. Both versions didn't have any fancy air suspension or lockers although bother were possible to order with them. Europe even got the T3 with the low range and lockers so it is possible, the parts are out there to convert. What is great about it compared to my Jeep is it gets over 20 mpg pulling my teardrop. 25 mph day to day in the city, and over 30 mpg out on the highway not towing. What isn't great is it has had to get quite a bit of warranty work done, new injectors and a new DEF pump. At least it's been 100% covered under the added 4 year warranty.

      I think there are a lot of great 4x4's to suit anyone's needs from a weekend camping daily driver to a fully built rock buggy .. just due research and if at all possible find people who do what your looking to due talk to them and learn from them if you do decide to build something remeber its not what you buy its how you build it ..the most important part of that build. What you do with the space between the steering wheel and the driver seat.

      I honestly didn’t notice much of a difference in driving dynamics when I lifted my passport 2 inches. I have a video called “2-inch lifted Honda Passport” and I go over all my observations in that video. While the Passport
      Handles pretty exceptional for its size, the ride just isn’t as nimble as something like a car based crossover. The passport is on Honda’s light truck architecture and there’s a bit of nose dive upon heavy braking and nose lift when you mash the gas pedal and do 0-60mph in under 6 seconds. Lifting it, doesn’t make it noticeably worse. Now... I plan to go with a 3.5 inch lift, and because the lift uses 1.5 inch sub frame spacers, I do in fact expect there to be a noticeable change.
