    I'm currently driving a 2018 Outback in North MS. I fish and hunt in remote spots. The only way to stop it is to tear out across a muddy ass agricultural field and eventually sink. Which would happen to pretty much any 1/2 ton pickup WITH mud tires. Or drive off into some super deep stuff that you probably could've found away around. My last 2 vehicles were full size Tundra's w 20" rims and mud tires and this Outback will go just about everywhere they went.. It's really all about the driver. The Outback just skates across the mud and sandy lake beds.. Oh and I'm not advocating driving thru ag fields unless you have permission. One thing I have noticed is the Subaru leaves hardly a footprint compared to a Can Am or Polaris that are jacked up with mud tires.. They destroy trails where the Outback just cruises over and around them...

    I think its a pretty little car. Should be a nice compromise in that it should be a pretty decent to good family hauler/daily driver but still allow some fun off the beaten path as long as its not hardcore.

      That's always been what most subaru enthusiasts have used them for, with minor mods they make them capable to do what they want and rock crawling etc is not one of those things. I feel subaru can offer a bumper upgrade for those doing a bit more than standard trails.

    This is my car. I have a 22 Wilderness (Outback). And I can't agree more about the tires and wheels. I would have even put 16's on it but they won't fit because of the extremely beefy braking system. But I did put 2 sizes bigger than stock tires on lighter stronger (and more expensive) rally wheels, which gave me only a slightly heavier per corner setup but one that rolled even easier over obstacles and gave me additional clearance. By the way, it's not just an inch factory lift, the struts are actually LONGER so you have more articulation, and that means more chance for your tire to still be touching the ground when you are tilted over, and more reach into those ruts, and higher compression into those wheel wells. I'm not sure HOW much more active articulation it is, probably not that much, but as a longtime Outback owner, I can tell the difference. It's not just higher, it has more reach. I also put on full front to back skid plates, so I am careful, because this is not a jeep or truck, but I am also confident, because it can take a few dings and scrapes on the underbody armor at low speeds. I also installed my own tubing solution from the rear diff breather to a spot about Chest high on the back hatch frame, the front diff has stock breathers at belly button height which is fine. Personally I try to stay away from water, especially salt water because I live by the beach and it floods sometimes, but I have been mid door deep in salt water, and door deep in creekwater, and this car swims like a champ.

Just wish they'd make a steel offroad front and back bumpers optional.

It’s definitely not the right choice for “extreme off-road conditions…but if you like camping on the weekends, having a vehicle that can comfortably fit your family, but also handles the road really well it’s a good fit.

    Approach: 23.6 (Outback Wild. is only 20)
    Breakover: 25.4 (Outback’s 21.2)
    Departure: 21.0 (Outback’s 23.6)

      A good 8-10 speed or stop faking a manual with a CVT and use the paddles for intent. Right to tell it you want speed and left paddle to tell it you want power. Then just reset that when you lift off the gas or tap the paddle again. Currently you give it gas quick for power, but need to ease on the gas for speed. That can lead to people not knowing what speed they will end up at.

    So Subaru finally built a Subaru like they should have been building them all along...well except for the low ground clearance issue with the approach and departure angle.
    I remember back when Subaru had 4WD instead of AWD. With an actual 2 speed transfer case and probably 9-10 inches of ground clearance. Then they went to a single speed transfer case but still 4WD, just had a button on the shift lever. I wouldn't mind owning an old 80's model Subaru 4WD wagon and one of the old Subaru Justy 4WD cars.
    The Wilderness package seems to have corrected the CVT issues that have always been problematic with Subaru once you leave pavement. Good to see they're starting to work back towards a true back country and back roads vehicle again.

    I was really interested in the Wilderness. I couldn't find one locally without the sunroof package. I bought a Passport AWD for $4k less. No turbo or CVT either.

      I have the Passport. Switched from Outback 2015. Ride is rough doesn’t maneuver through deep snow like Subaru either and the eyesight cruise terrible

    10/10 REVIEW!

  • @Databyter
    @Databyter 24 дня назад

    Just to clarify the marketing crap. These Subaru's are ALWAYS in Xmode. Xmode is just torque vectoring. I call regular mode Xmode2. Xmode 1 allows less or no spin than 2, Xmode 3 allowed MORE spin than 2. They are all the same torque vectoring, with different allowances for spin and momentum. 99% of the time Xmode2, which is the regular driving mode, is the BEST compromise between 1 and 3, even when in the dirt and mud. Don't let the marketing confuse you. 1 is when you need zero spin to get unstuck or some other types of terrain, and 3 is when you need more momentum and spin allowance than 2 (regular mode) would normally allow. It's great for sand dunes and powering thru deep snow without losing mementum because you don't want to apply brakes in those deep soft situations. Putting it in Xmode3 was the right call for that boggy area to keep momentum going, but 2 could probably slug it out ok. 1 would be a waste of gas and too much braking to prevent spin. Databyter

      Keep watching Matt's Off Road Recovery. He's bound to rescue one sooner or later (although beach and desert sand aren't quite the same). :)

    Truck Kings, What a pity, due to the fact Americans don't buy wagons, the Outback is the last mainstream station wagon for sale in wagon-loving Canada.

    Subaru is such a contrast of vehicle in built quality compared to any Hyundai or KIA or Genenis products.

      Japanese, there’s a difference. Remember growing up with that Honda big red that just wouldn’t die? Then your buddy had that cool Polaris, but it was a total POS? There has been a difference in build quality for about half a century now….

      Yeah, the quality of the Subaru is more long term. The korean cars woo people in with initial feel, but they're more delicate. This car will survive more use.
      I'm not a fanboy of either, but i've been around the korean cars when they are aged, and they don't hold up long term.

      Go on kijiji and type in Subaru, then look at anything older than 2010. Virtually half if not more will have blown engines, new engines or leaky head gaskets. I've owned 6 Subarus but still confused why people seem to think these cars are reliable long term?

    • @Thankyou_3
      @Thankyou_3 2 года назад

      @@gs98999 I never once said Subarus are better long term reliability than Toyota/Lexus. My point was that they are far better built than those junk Hyundai, Kia or Genesis. Korean cars have the tick of death on all their engines and transmissions. Junk cars exist because people keep buying these Korean cars. For the record, Korean and Japanese cars are from Asian manufacturers but they totally different quality and countries. 😂

      @@TruckKing I'm just pointing out that this is less of a revolutionary advancement for Subaru, and more of a return to form of their older days. They may have more recent reputation as soft road wagons pandering to the coasts, but around rural Oregon they've always been off road thrashers. After decades of us slapping our own turbos, lifts, and skid plates on it's nice to see them as a factory package.
