    As an owner of an 05 Highlander, I'd have to go with the 07. Highlanders of that era are easy to spot on the road, while new Highlanders look like every other SUV on the road.

    I owned a 01 highlander base (same color) with the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. I just sold it two months ago with 225k miles! Great vehicle never left me stranded or on the side of the road and same for my uncle who owned the vehicle before me (original owner from 01). I recommend it, it’s reliable!

      did you have to add any oil on that model 2.4?

    • @peterkohler7259
      @peterkohler7259 3 года назад +1

      @@robertp9370 yes I did. It did have a very small amount of seepage from the front timing cover, but it mostly burned the oil from blow by around the piston rings. It burns about 1 qt of oil every 5000 miles. These engines from Toyota are notorious to be oil burners, but I was fortunate to have a relatively mild amount of it. Should be okay though as long as it keeps getting oil every 4-5k miles. Should be good to go to 300k so long as the minor things don’t add up (suspension, etc). I still do the maintenance on it for the current owner so it’s still doing good. I decided to go ahead and replace the starter since it’s 20 years old and has 230k miles on it now. I’m planning to do the alternator towards the end of next year. Honestly though, it’s been great. Almost everything on the car is still original. I did a few things like replace the serpentine belt, thermostat, all fluids, motor mounts, had to rebuild brakes as the calipers were leaking, valve cover gasket, and some lights. That’s pretty much it aside from the routine maintenance. The previous owner had to replace a Catalytic converter and an O2 sensor and 3 coil packs. 4th one is still going strong. Overall, I think it’s doing well for going on 21 years old.

I love the quality of interior material and ergonomic features like double cub holders on both rear passenger doors, adjustable rear seats even 3rd row has folding adjustment. Visibility and driving comfort is awesome. My car has about 195K mile now but still drives very smooth and quite without any mechanical problem. i love it and scare to trade in any other car which can make me upset. It has 268,000 miles on it and still runs smooth and quiet and drives solid and straight. The driver's seat is comfortable for my arthritic spine and hips, and for me, it's lack of bells and whistles and it's reliability makes up for it's not-so-good fuel mileage at 19/24 mpg. I intend to keep it and drive it until the running gear finally gives out.

I'm 23 and I cant even stand all the tech in these new cars. though the TSS 2.0 is attractive, in the current car market I can't just justify paying $35k+ for it. This is just me but I think this video would have been a lot more interesting if we had your thoughts and views. You have access to both vehicles. What's been your experience? compare and contrast the ride, the handling, road noise, comfort, and access between the two. Basically you gave an information dump and then asked us which one we liked better. Which is not wrong or anything, just a bit bland and empty. Not knowing much about these vehicles but in the market now, I would have found that much more interesting and useful.

    A first gen highlander in good state of repair with quality coilovers and a rear sway bar is very nice to drive. Under $2000 to make them disturbingly sporty and more comfy than the shorter rx330. Stock they handle like a jellybean. Not badly, just what you would expect for a 20 year old camry suv. It's easy to make the interior quiet with cld tiles in doors and many parts are shared with later models, front sway bars from 2008 up cars bolt right in, brakes from 2008 cars bolt right on with 17" wheels for 12.6" rotors and dual pistons vs the 11.7" stockers. A rare gear based limited slip was offered on rx300s and also bolts right in. Paired with the 50/50 front rear split transfer case and it has excellent performance in low traction environments.The first few years of RX350 shared everything transmission back with the 3.3l 5 speed awd cars so despite there being little aftermarket support for the venerable 3.3l 3mzfe, it's on the easier side to build a ~400hp sleeper vs. many platforms. The newer engines not only made more power, but lotus bought some from toyota, bolted a supercharger on it and tuned it for 400hp w/ no internal modifications. Those are available and hilariously expensive, but it indicates that the motor supports fairly high boost despite its high compression ratio. If you're putting an rx350 subframe/motor in at once then routing for a turbocharger is made simpler. Toyota also offered a supercharger overseas. Cheaper and based on a small pre-tvs eaton blower so cannot perform like the lotus version, but available. Toyota undersized the sway bars on the first generation and rectified that mistake in later models. Rx330 seats bolt in and steering wheel options abound. Taking the roof rack off makes it quiet and more stable on the highway (with ~8% fuel mileage improvement) and adjustable coilovers (despite sounding like a strange modification for an old suv) allow lowering the car an inch or so for another bump in long distance highway mileage. With LRR tires and this done a non hybrid consistently exceeds 25mpg highway. Not bad in a world of lighter, smaller 4 cyl equipped cars getting marginally better numbers. If you put massive highway miles on your 1st gen, consider the roof rack and coilovers. Better driving experience and the extra 30 miles a tank or so adds up!

    Jeff, This is a terrific old vs new format with nearly endless possibilities. When it comes to visibility, I feel your pain. In fact, I would say that is the one area where big brother Toyota could learn a lesson from little brother Subaru. Today vehicles are over-styled. The size and function of the third side window in many CUVs is sacrificed on the alter of fashion. BTW I don't consider a well maintained 2007 Toyota with only 157,000 miles to be particularly old. Lastly, will you be sneeking cats 0:21 into more videos to help with the RUclips algorithm? ;-)

      Yes, I agree about the styling. I somewhat tongue-in-cheek call my 2007 a Camry Station Wagon. 2021 _literally_ looks like Toyota's version of a (Dodge) station wagon. Also, I get 6.4 hp/100 lbs vs 5.4/100 for the 2021

      @@MarcillaSmith Interesting, if you call a 2007 Highlander a Camry station wagon, what would you call a 2009-2015(16*) Venza?
      *We had a 2016 Venza in Canada because the Camry wagon aka Venza was just as popular as the Camry SUV aka Highlander.

    We had 2007 Highlander sport 4wd cloth seats, towing package, tan cloth interior, green exterior, three row of seats, and early s.t. a. r. System which had abs, traction control, and other safety systems for that year. It was also a 3.3 liter V-6. Ran great , had four years and traded in on a diesel Jetta wagon.

    That space in the 2007 center console was a perfect place to put my purse. Now, where do we put a our purse when there are back seat passengers? Toyota needs some engineers who think about that. I feel so nostalgic watching this one. 😥

      I still have 07 Highlander with only 50k miles. As far as I know this generation was built in Japan same as the Lexus. Its size is smaller than the newer generations so it could be good in city parking. For newer generations there're always improvements no doubt about it. What I like better the old ones is it's easier to DIY maintenance such as transmission oil change with oil dipstick. The new ones do not have the transmission oil dipstick and easier to overfill and the dealer will not consider as a recommended maintenance. Overall, both are good choices.

    Um. Did I just hear you say cup holders as you gestured to the front center console? Have I been missing some component this entire time?!! Mine is the 2007 Hybrid Limited and that is the biggest thing I would change is add some cup holders to the front. I figured they want everyone to be hands free. But I can reach the ones behind me. XD. I think I'm gonna do a Google search for a missing part. Yes, the windows are way cooler on the 2007. But my Highlander got smashed by a 4Runner and now I'm thinking I'd rather have one of those. It walked away with little to no damage. I'm stuck with a bunch of stuff.
