  • A huge milestone in setting up this dream reef tank build is the engine room, otherwise known as a sump.
In this video I take you through the sump I've had custom built by the fine folks at Hmahli Australia to meet the exact requirements for my new display tank.
This thing is a piece of art, I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it.
If you would like to enquire about getting your own incredible sump, check out the options and contact details at:
    hmahliaustrali...
    Eric does ship worldwide!!!

I'll enjoy watching this build come together. I purchased only a 41 gallon waterbox and its a work in progress. Its been dry several months as I research and build a mixing station. Im in no hurry and am taking things slowly. I should finally be putting water in it in a few weeks and will let it cycle for a month or two. Can't wait to put a few fish in it and then frags in 4 months or so

Gorgeous and I am super jelly. I would like to offer a tip. That light for the refugium is going to cause coralline algae to grow on our skimmer. It did on my sump. I added another divider for the light to prevent it from shinning light in the areas of the tank that you dont want things to grow......SUPER SEXY SETUP. I love this tank, stand, and sump....I agree on the filter pad, its true it will attract detritus but its also an easy clean with a ton of positive reasons why to have it on there.

    That is a gorgeous sump
On your RODI system add a delay relay and a second solenoid valve so when your sump reservoir calls for more water the system will send the first bit of waters to the drain instead of the sump reservoir. My solenoid for this bypass is located prior to the DI resin to not waster resin on the TDS creep water.

That looks great. Instead of using sponge or filter floss in the narrow section to trap any rogue chaeto, have a look at Japanese matting. It’s used in pond filters, isn’t overly fine so won’t clog, and it’s quite rigid, so is really easy to take outside and hose clean. I used it in my freshwater sump to contain K1 media, and it worked really well.

Beautiful sump and great job thinking out placement of all your hardware. The only concern that I have is in the racetrack before the filter roller. I can see detritus building up in it overtime so hopefully it is relatively easy to be able to suck it clean. I have always seen with the roller filter the water going strait into the chamber that the roller mat is in. Other than that I am jealous of your set up and wish it was mine.

Amazing sump, definitely a work of art. Do you have a rodi bin for your mixing station? I don't have a top off reservoir on any of my tanks as i pull directly from my mixing station rodi bin. For me, 50g rodi drum lasts a long time on a 70g total water volume setup. Do you have a video of this sump in action? I would love to see how the fuge worked out seems like a really good idea.

Very nice unique sump! There is an awful amount of thought into making a sump like yours. I wonder if it is up and running by now, but i do have a few questions if you do not mind answering.
Is the return chamber big enough for those 2 Abyzz pump? those pumps could really run that compartment dry if fully opened.
Why not using media reactor instead? Detritus will look into getting into that chamber in my opinion. It will be then blast by all the air bubbles and end up in the return chamber, bringing a good part of it in the DT.
Is there a pump in the reservoir to bring the water to level? I would check for an extra security float in case something block your current float.
Can not wait to see how that refugium chamber works!
Thank you for sharing! I am in the process of making my custom sump and this video helped me a lot!

    • @ParkersReef
      @ParkersReef  3 года назад +1

Hey Richard, thanks for taking the time to watch and also comment. Hopefully I can answer some of your questions :)
It most certainly is up and running now, you can check out some of my more recent videos for further updates
Yes, I do have 2 abyzz a200 in there and it is large enough. Would it drain it if they were opened up, absolutely! But they are not there to run at 100%. My return sits at 50% and the accessory pump is currently at 25%.
Detritus shouldn't make it to the media chamber as it would have to pass the filter roller. If it does and it does get blasted into the display, that's ok!
Not sure what you mean about a pump in the reservoir, I am assuming you mean the RODI reservoir? If so, it uses a spectrapure ATO. The reservoir itself actually has two upper float switches just in case something happened to the first one :)
Oh nice, where can we see more info on your build? Be great to follow along!

You will find that cheato wont grow fast due to the roller. Its overkill for tank that size. I run a 75 gallon long sump on 200g. Display. with the deep sand bed fuge and cheato in sump. The skimmer and fuge is plenty. Love the sump. Are the dividers removable so you can take them out. Fuges are amazing. Fuge alone will out compete tank if built up right.

Hi Sam, first of im fairly new to reefing and you are by far the most help and fun to watch on RUclips, great job!
I'm currently designing my custom Hmahli sump (talked to Eric a few times now and he's bloody great!) It will be for my 3metre approximately 1800litre FOWLR tank I'm designing.
I've got a question about your refugium, how big is it and how is it going with the Kessil light directly on the lid, instead of raised up for more even spread?
My refugium chamber will be 420mm x 420mm. I'm wanting to use the AI Prime 16hd Fuge light, mounted directly on the blacked out lid exactly like you have done. Do you think this will still work well for me like it has for you? Or is there any changes to that fuge design or my light choice that you would recommend? Thanks heaps and keep up the amazing work!

Jealous. Interesting to see you have thought of flow for the chaeto and your proposed solution. I know the chiller is outside. Wondering about heating if required and where you would place it. How easy is it to access the return pumps when required for cleaning, especially when plumbed and specifically concerning sight line?

    • @ParkersReef

All great questions and indeed something I have thought of.
Heating takes place in the end of the sump prior to the filter roller.

Hi Sam, I’m in the process of beginning the planning of my dream reef tank.
When starting to plan your custom sump, where did you start and what were the processes to get you to where this amazing sump got to?
At this stage, I’ve got the wall picked that I’ll put it on and is 3.5m wide. I have an existing aqua one 90 tank, that I’d like to have integrated with the one sump next to my dream tank and set that up as a clown tank with some anemones.

On my dream tank as per above, i would like to have a chamber for a secondary skimmer for the use of Ozone. I went hunting on your channel for your take on ozone.
Have you had much of a look into this?
Also, is a little tricky to find many videos etc on skimmers that are ozone safe. I have found the Nyos quantum range and some of the Octo range but that’s really about it that even advertises as being ozone safe.
Would you have any other suggestions to look into?

hahaha good stuff, more people invested in it the better! Yeah I did and you are right, there was good debate as to what was better. Ultimately I went this way for a couple reasons - the main being that to keep the refugium as large as possible, it was going to have to go after the skimmer :) But I do also believe that it is the way to go. The skimmer shouldn't really be competing for the same nutrients that the refugium is, but hey, that's only my thoughts - so I have made it so that I can switch them over if I change my mind :D

Speaking from experience and my Lifereef sump, how are you going to keep the pieces of Chaeto that break off out of the filter pad section? That baffle flowing through the bottom is going to be a nightmare of little pieces of macro getting caught in the pad.. Lifereef created my sump refugium section almost the same, the water went through the baffle only slightly higher than yours, into a filter pad also, and it was a PITA to keep broken pieces of macro out of it. It made a mess. Luckily, I live in CO, and they came out and replaced the baffle.
