Using an 8 mm or L size crochet hook and Bernat Softee Baby Chunky Yarn, this project will work up quickly as it's using half double crochets.
This is an easy to follow pattern that relies on you to crochet in strategic steps to build up the blanket. It's really not difficult at all.

In all my years of crochet, I've never thought to make a log cabin patterned blanket! After seeing this one, I wonder how I never thought to do this!
This pattern is lovely and so simple - thank you for teaching an old dog a new trick!
    Cheers

You picked the most fun colors to teach with. I love bright colors. Baby blankets always seem to be done on pastels, even when just teaching a pattern.

I have my own variation of log cabin that I do :) I use it as a great way to get rid of scraps and it always turns out fantastic!! I usually just make sure I have 12 DC or HDC and do 7rows to help with the turning and stitch count but I love this concept as well.

You don't have to add the marker to know where the right side is in this pattern, all you have to do is to see that the beginning tail yarn in your beginning first row of chain stitches will be on the left side bottom of your work, it's that simple :)

I'm a little confused. Based on the pattern, and the diagram regarding the blocks, block #3 should begin on the blue section, going across the orange section (block 1), but in your video, you're saying to begin block 3 on the purple block going across to the blue section that you just completed. Which is correct?

You could do it but you'd get a different sized blanket if you follow their stitch count. You'd have to go by measurement rather than the stitch count in the pattern to get the same sized blanket.
The alternative would be to follow the pattern, but continue on with it to get the size you want. This will give you a smaller log cabin pattern, but with more logs.
If you want the same sized logs, I'd suggest you make a 6" square in the yarn and with the hook you want, do a stitch count on that and then work it out from your stitch and row count from that squeare. I hope that made sense.
One of the nice things about crochet is that you can do things by measurement much easier than if you're knitting. I'm planning on doing this with a thinner yarn as a stash buster, so that's how I'll be working it out too.

I stopped watching when you said you were going to show how to get the right number of stitches on the side but then it took you two tries because you are learning as you are making the video. Seriously? Don't waste people's time. If you are making a how-to video, at least have the decency of learning how to do it first! I''m out of patience for this type of thing.
