It could've been handled better, but overall I thought is was a satisfying adventure. It's certainly better than their last few theatrical films aside from Encanto.
Welcome back Atlantis 2 and Belle's Magical World. For those that don't know, these 2 movies were the living corpse of planned TV shows that were then canceled only the stuff they planned out were reworked into movies at the end which this now marks the 3rd time they pulled it.
I imagine someone then watching the movie in detail to verify which part of the movie is the beginning and end of an episode of the series that was originally going to be
It reminds me of when Disney put "Olaf's Frozen Adventure" in front of "Coco" instead of keeping it as a television short film as originally intended. Their reasoning was that the overall look and animation was so beautiful that it just HAD to be seen on the big screen, despite being about 22 minutes long and people wanting to see "Coco" instead of a near half hour long Frozen short. I feel like that was just the start of Disney making poor decisions. Some things that are made for the small screen should stay on the small screen, even if the animation is beautiful.
I'm sure Olaf's Frozen Adventure was bad but I wonder why other shorts like Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Prince and the Pauper and the Winnie the Pooh featurettes which are all 25 minutes long were also shown before films was okay. I'm not complaining at all in fact I like all those shorts but I didn't know what Olaf's Frozen Adventure did different than the others. But I'd take Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh any day over Frozen.
Don't mess with Pixar and "movies about culture" viewers. Disney is not on the same level as Pixar even if it wanted to. That's what will happen if you do.
Because they were all designed to be theatrical short films - and were all advertised as a “double-bill” with the main feature. This was also in the day where audiences were more familiar with short films opening a movie.
@@AussieDisneyGirl I don't have any high hopes at all for that Mufasa one. No one asked for it and Disney messed it up too much by making it with an art-style that no fans wanted it to be made with (photo-realistic CGI instead of the 2D animation that the original Lion King movie was made with) and making the titular character be an orphan instead of still being royal blood! The trailers show it as a boring film and Disney is barely marketing it. So I've been believing that the highly anticipated Sonic 3 movie which especially has Jim Carrey returning as Eggman and this time also Gerald Robotnik and Keanu Reeves as the VA of Shadow, is going to beat it at the box office this December because of the casting choices and how interesting Paramount has been showing that they are making that videogame adaption movie be along with the fact that it's been made clear on social media that the public hype for it is real! So like many other fans, I can't wait to watch that movie!!!!
I'd like to see that. As long as it doesn't follow the 'girl boss' or the main character having to save the x, y, and z tropes. And a naturally evil villain would be refreshing to see
It just feels like such a massive act of disrespect toward all the people who worked on it. The writers, the voice actors, and, depending on how far into production it was, the animators and editors. Shortening a 6-8 hour series into a theatrical-length movie is cutting out about 75-80% of their work! It's just sad to see.
At the time I was more of a Moana guy after Moana came out and quickly forgot about Zootopia, but I think the opposite has happened ever since I rewatched Zootopia. I am rooting more for Zootopia than I am for Moana. Moana is good, but I like Zootopia better. It is my second favorite Disney movie after all. And to top all of that off, the sequel is my most anticipated film of next year.
Some of them are good, many of them are average, some of them are awful. When I say this I don’t refer to wether the movie is good or bad, I refer to the fact that there’s a very clear and distinct quality between their DTV movies and their theatrical output.
I honestly want to see Disney tip their pinkies back into DTV movies. Only this time the entries should be sequels/midquels/spinoffs of their most iconic/ popular DTVA shows like Pepper Ann, Kim Possible, American Dragon Jake Long, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, the Owl House, the Ghost and Molly Mcgee ,Ducktales 2017 etc.
I got to see Moana 2 last night, and personally,s really good! Not as good as the original, but it was still pretty good. I nearly cried when Grandma Tala appeared, and I also loved seeing more Pua in the film! Despite Lin-Manuel Miranda not returning, Barlow & Bear did an incredible job with the soundtrack! And hearing Auli'i Cravalho and The Rock reprise their roles was really nice as well. Overall, while it's definitely not THE BEST Disney sequel, it was pretty good, and I hope to see where else Moana will take us.
And as someone who actually LOVES all the Disney direct-to-video sequels (including "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame 2"), that wouldn't be a problem for me at all. ^_^ Of course, I haven't seen the film yet, but I definitely plan to, & I think you guys should give it a chance in spite of this review. :-) You just might end up liking/loving it yourselves! ^_^
People in the comments are confusing "Direct-to-Video" for meaning "bad" It's probably not a bad film (i haven't scene it yet) But "Direct to Video" is more about if you should spend 40 bucks per ticket or not
I don’t feel too worried about Zootopia 2 because it has always remained a movie actually because it has been in development since 2017 and I bet it’s not a retold movie turned into an actual sequel. It’s actually an actual sequel to Zootopia
Same here. In fact, that movie is my most anticipated film of next year. The first Zootopia if you do not include the other properties that Disney bought is my second favorite Disney movie only behind the original Lion King from 1994!
I will agree that the series would have given sore of a chance to see the world expand and the characters develop and grow. But the film itself in my opinion is absolutely amazing. It is different enough to stand on its own.
feels like they did the same thing with Raya the Last Dragon. It was supposed to be a short series, with plenty of breathing room for all the characters and southeast Asian cultures to be introduced - we were supposed to get a Disney warrior princess, but it was just smushed together into a movie with half-written characters and sloppy representation at the end.
This is basically the first movie from Walt Disney animation studios you’ve reviewed since Encanto back in 2021 if I’m not mistaken either. You didn’t review strange world or wish at all from what I remember. I can’t wait to see your new ranking of every movie of WDAS someday as well in the future hopefully.
You hit the nail on the head. The first was my favorite Disney princess movie (which she says she is "not a princess" in the new film, oops). The new characters fell flat. An old gardener, a young ship builder that hits stuff with an axe, and a Maui fan boy? Come on!! The bat lady was pointless, the previous bad guys now team up with them, Maui is not sarcastic anymore, no interesting bad guy to go against. It failed at all but good-looking animation
I haven't seen the movie yet, but my expectations aren't high. Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally meant to be a movie, but it was stretched into a series, and it kinda suffered because of it. Moana 2 originally being a series, likely condensed into a movie, sounds like a direct to video sequel like Beauty and the Beast 3 or Atlantis 2
Even before the strike, Disney also put out Barbarian to theatres even when they originally picked it up for a direct-to-Hulu release. A24 and NEON thought the film would bomb and rejected it. Disney/Fox only picked it up out of pity for a Hulu release. Test audiences loved it so much that it instead went to theatres and did pretty well in proportion to its tiny budget. Funny since Smile has many similarities to Barbarian, and Smile was also originally going to go straight-to-Paramount+ before test audiences also loved it, and it got a wide theatrical release.
Great review, I apreciate your honesty in a world almost dominated by Disney in the entertainment business....keep up the good work and Congratulations for your work 👏👌🥇🏆🤗👍🥳🎖
Came out of this film, and BOY this felt like a TV series pilot. The immediate comparisons I had for the film were The Return of Jafar and Stitch: The Movie, due to feeling like episodes merged together to form a movie. But while The Return of Jafar had higher stakes and character growth for Iago, and the Stitch: The Movie had a better premise with the Experiments, Moana 2 was just safe but pointless. I'm still trying to get a grasp at what the theme of Moana 2 was supposed to be. At least the animation was really good.
Walt Disney Animation’s fall off is crazy. They are literally just on par with illumination quality wise. Zootopia 2 maybe the last straw for me i really hope that one doesn’t disappoint.
Come on, that's a bit of an overreaction. At the very least, Disney knows how to put effort into a story, as opposed to Illumination, where almost everything they make is complete filler just to pad out the run time. I'm prepared for whatever comes with Moana 2 and if it turns into another disappointing follow up in the veins of the other Disney sequels, direct-to-video or not, then at least I can move on from Disney Animation forever and save my anticipation for true sequels like Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

@@cbm-analyst1507 Yeah, I know. But if this is everything Dave described then any hope of Zootopia 2 being good would be immediately dashed. Which is disappointing because I was really anticipating for that movie since I loved the first one so much.
It's unfortunate that the studio's recent theatrical sequels have been subpar. Ralph 2, Frozen 2, now Moana 2. I am hopeful that Zootopia 2 and Frozen 3 & 4 live up to their originals.
disney got Billy crystal and John goodman to reprise their roles for monsters at work, so disney can get talent for smaller productions same with Tom hanks with toy story of terror/that time forgot specials,
Yes, but their role in that series is *vastly* reduced. Something I specifically mentioned in this video. They’re not in every episode and when they’re there they’re not there for long. I have a feeling the same would’ve been for the Rock in this “series,” which possibly explains why he disappears for half the movie.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but the fact that it was originally a TV series has always made me feel unsure about it, even though I enjoyed the first Moana film too. If the series had the same amount of episodes as the Iwaju series, then I think it would've worked better as a movie, but the way you talked about the story here made it feel like the Moana series might've had more than just six episodes. I'm still going to check this out sometime, but now I am setting my expectations low. Also, do you think this movie might make some people have a different tune about Wish? Say what you will about that film, but at least that was always meant and made to be a movie.
Looks like Disney is gonna have to downsize the company and make their future films cheaper. As in, they're gonna have to start outsourcing animation duties to other studios to save themselves.
Should’ve been a planned sequel from the beginning. Brought back Lin Manuel Miranda. But most importantly had a great script. Ugh Disney why??? Inside out 2 was an amazing sequel and it showed in the box office.
Unfortunately, after gaining the publics good graces back after Inside Out 2 & Deadpool and Wolverine. This movie will most definitely make a billion dollars
This not the first time in the 2020s that Disney decided to turn a originally spoused to be a tv show sequel to a movie into show, Disney made movies for Ice Age and Night at the Museum(which was animated) that were originally announced as tv show sequel to the franchise but then decided to turn them into a movie for their streaming services and the results for those movies weren’t as they both met bad to mix reviews from fans and trust me I was disappointed that Disney ruined Night at the Museum by making a cartoon movie, but I think Moana 2 is going to be fine besides Disney actually got the original cast to come back for the film unlike how dirty they Ice Age the adventures of Buck wild(where they only brought one original cast member back) and Night at the museum kahmunrah rises again (where they didn’t had any original cast member).
I can’t say I’m surprised about your review for this movie at all. Topping the first movie was always going to be a hard job to fulfill. It’s been getting pretty average reviews online roughly in 65% on rotten tomatoes and metacritic. Something along those lines. I can’t say I’m surprised but I’ll still go into this new movie with an open mind.
I think its the same problem with Lightyear where because there aren't many well established characters in Buzz's history the writers struggled to come up with characters that could live up to Buzz's legacy. Added Thought For a sequel I would have done something crazy like have the whole ocean dry up and the main characters have to travel across the ocean floor to discover where the water went.
@123Yellowberry123 It will never stop being annoying that in the first movie the ocean has a mind of its own and can literally drag the protagonist back into the story. Removing the ocean is one of the only logically ways to give the protagonist a proper challenge. As someone who grew up on an island I can't image the horror of knowing that most of the ocean is gone and I'm now living in a dessert. I'm surprised more stories haven't tackled this topic specifically. You can argue most post-apocalyptic stories manage this topic but don't focus on the ocean specifically.
Well the story of Moana 2 was really supposed to be a Disney plus series before it got turned into a feature length film which is the reason why it probably felt like that.
well at least it's better then ice age adventures of buck wild on how that was supposed to be a TV show yet got turn into a movie and it was very awful
Remember, this sequel was meant to be a Disney plus sequel series until it was retooled into a direct dvd movie. Yup, this is easily a rental for Disney plus on me
Would the story have stood out if you didn't know it was once set up as a Disney+ show? I think people are going in knowing this fact and looking too critically for it.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder Most reviews I have seen mention this Disney+ series fact, which makes me think people are going in looking for story issues. I would like to see a review that the person did not know this fact and if they still thought the story had issues.
All the straight-through-video and theatrical sequels to Walt Disney Animation Studios Films are all trash, except The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata!, the 2004 direct-to-video prequel to the 1994 Walt Disney Animated Feature Film, The Lion King
@@spinlok3943 Isn’t that what you wanted, though? Don’t go complaining about Disney’s “lack of originality” when those movies exist. They are all non-sequels and new IPs.
@DaveLeeDownUnder another downside, is that moana 2 could have been nominated or won many "children & family emmys" if it was a tv series, than "acamedy awards" with the current theatrical movie", so I'm guessing that's why they're getting "Disney feature animation/Walt disney animation studios" which has been always theatrical produced and released content, to stop doing all theatrical stuff and do TV and streaming to win awards and get more fans, and more in the "2020s", they have already won emmys from their D+ series Baymax and monsters at work....

Added Thought
For a sequel I would have done something crazy like have the whole ocean dry up and the main characters have to travel across the ocean floor to discover where the water went.
That sounds really interesting! I would love to see that concept explored someday.
I literally spend the entire video talking about this.
This is disappointing to hear. Unfortunately this time around, it appears that Disney chose financial incentive over delivering a worthy follow-up.
well at least it's better then ice age adventures of buck wild on how that was supposed to be a TV show yet got turn into a movie and it was very awful
Remember, this sequel was meant to be a Disney plus sequel series until it was retooled into a direct dvd movie. Yup, this is easily a rental for Disney plus on me
It’s going to make tons of money, regardless.
Is that so? Then I suppose it's a direct-to-video renaissance?
Yep and that's why I'm not going to spend $50 to go see it and buy concessions for that quality
Oh geez
Would the story have stood out if you didn't know it was once set up as a Disney+ show? I think people are going in knowing this fact and looking too critically for it.
No it wouldn’t have. As I said, it is a messy, incoherent story. Knowing that it was originally planned as a series _explains_ why.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder Most reviews I have seen mention this Disney+ series fact, which makes me think people are going in looking for story issues. I would like to see a review that the person did not know this fact and if they still thought the story had issues.
And it looks like quite a few people in this comment section are already prejudging the movie because they know the Disney+ series fact.
All the straight-through-video and theatrical sequels to Walt Disney Animation Studios Films are all trash, except The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata!, the 2004 direct-to-video prequel to the 1994 Walt Disney Animated Feature Film, The Lion King
The Lion King and Aladdin sequels were all quite good!
Did Moana really need a sequel
Hopefully that this animated movie won't make over a billion $ like frozen 2(frozen 2 is also one of the worst disney animated movie ever made.
Told you it would suck as a sequel.
People are always so binary lately. Either it’s great or it sucks. Nothing in between.
Can i get a cheehoo
That is just wrong and I'm going to see moana 2 and to love it.
It’s neither “wrong”, nor right. It is an opinion.
Doesn't sound like high praise
2.5/5 isn’t that bad
It’s a below-average score for me.
@@DaveLeeDownUnderwhy didn’t you just give it lower than 2.5 lol
I saw this a mile away. I knew it was just a cash grab sequel.
You can’t blame families for making the first Moana one of the most streamed movies of all times.
@ But I can blame Disney for lack of originality!
@@spinlok3943 Where were you when Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Strange World, and Wish came out?
@@gamestation2690 Safe at home saving my money. 😂
@@spinlok3943 Isn’t that what you wanted, though? Don’t go complaining about Disney’s “lack of originality” when those movies exist. They are all non-sequels and new IPs.
This is wrong, a lot of people already love this film already cause IGN got attacked for giving it a 6
It’s neither “wrong”, nor right. It is an opinion.
IGN would’ve been attacked either way. People get mad at all of their takes.
@DaveLeeDownUnder another downside, is that moana 2 could have been nominated or won many "children & family emmys" if it was a tv series, than "acamedy awards" with the current theatrical movie",
so I'm guessing that's why they're getting "Disney feature animation/Walt disney animation studios" which has been always theatrical produced and released content, to stop doing all theatrical stuff and do TV and streaming to win awards and get more fans, and more in the "2020s", they have already won emmys from their D+ series Baymax and monsters at work....
